Pampilhosa da Serra, Portugal on June
18.
Official reports on Portugal's deadliest
natural disaster in decades have
described freak conditions that drove
the wildfire that killed 64 people,
while Portuguese authorities said
Thursday they have contained a
second fire that raged for five days
close by.
More than 2,000 firefighters and some
two dozen water-dropping aircraft
fought the two fires for days and
nights amid strong winds and
temperatures above 104 Fahrenheit as
the country's annual wildfire season
started earlier than usual.
Traditionally, emergency services gear
up for major fires beginning in July.

A woman cries as Democratic candidate for 6th
Congressional District Jon Ossoff concedes to
Republican Karen Handel at his election night
party in Atlanta on June 20.
Handel won a nationally watched congressional
election Tuesday in Georgia, and she thanked
President Donald Trump after she avoided an
upset that would have rocked Washington
ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.
Returns showed Handel, a former Georgia
secretary of state, winning about 52 percent of
the vote over Ossoff, who won nearly 48
percent in Georgia's 6th Congressional District.
Tuesday night's outcome in a special House race
was a triumph for the GOP, and the most recent
and devastating illustration of the Democrats'
problems — from a weak bench and recruiting
problems to divisions about what the party
stands for today.

Zahra Khorasani, Emad's
mother, told Reuters they had
spent all their savings on
finding treatment for the
child's rare disease.
"Emad has been in surgery
three times. I have spent all
my money and borrowed from
everybody I can. No one lends
us money any more," she said.
Emad suffers from
Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS),
a rare disease caused by the
body's inability to produce
specific enzymes.

On June 7 this year, Emad's
father went to post office to
send a letter to the president
and ask for help.
"That day I prayed to God: 'If
you fix things, it will be great.
If not, I will not ask anyone for
help again'," Esmaeilnejad
said.
Emad's mother took the boy
to parliament to make a
desperate plea for support.
"Someone told me to go to
parliament to ask for help. I
prepared a letter and went
there," Khorasani said.

But as mother and son waited in the reception area,
Islamist suicide bombers and gunmen attacked the
building, shooting at people with pistols and assault
weapons.
"Everyone was running away. Everyone was trying to find a
way to save themselves. Some made it. But many were
killed," Emad’s mother said.
The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the Tehran
attacks in which 17 people were killed. Gunmen
simultaneously attacked the mausoleum of Ayatollah
Khomeini in southern Tehran.

"I told myself I might live or die. Whatever God
wants will happen," Khorasani said.
She is happy that her son could not hear the
traumatic gunshots because of his poor hearing.
Emad's mother grabbed him and ran. In one of the
corridors, security forces gave them bullet proof
vests and evacuated them from the building.
Pictures of Emad, being passed by security forces
through a window from an upper floor, were

necessary.
Esmaeilnejad said the photo solved half of
his problems. "But the rest of problems are
still there. I am unemployed and have no

CARACAS, VENEZUELA Carlos Garcia Rawlins
Over months of protests Carlos Garcia Rawlins
has been on Venezuela's streets daily,
documenting increasingly violent clashes with
security forces, experience that helped put
him within eyeshot of a soldier who fatally
wounded a young activist at close range.
Hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans have
taken to the streets across the country since
April to demand elections, solutions to hunger
and shortages, and an end to President
Nicolas Maduro's plan to overhaul the
constitution.
June 22 , 2017
June 29, 2017 Pictures of the day - June 21 - 25 , 2017 169
On Thursday, a thousands-strong march that was aiming to reach the chief prosecutor's
office in Caracas was broken up by security forces with tear gas and pellets. Protesters
burned a truck, before dispersing to a wide junction on an urban freeway that has been
the site of clashes on several occasions recently.
The freeway runs past La Carlota air base, and soldiers and National Guards fired gas from
inside the perimeter of the base to try to clear the highway. About a hundred protesters
threw rocks back and began to tear a part of the fence.

Garcia, who has photographed this spot many times,
used a concrete barrier in the road for protection and
shot the scene with a long lens.
"There are several points, on the bridge of the junction,
or below, but always trying to keep ourselves covered by
the crash barrier of the freeway," said Garcia, 38.
"Yesterday, the protesters broke open the fence."

In a matter of seconds, a youth standing in the gap in the fence jumped down as a group of
military men carrying long firearms approached from inside the base.
David Jose Vallenilla, 22, was crouched down on the highway by the fence. At this moment
he stood up, protected only by a small rucksack strapped to his chest, and just a few feet
from the soldier, who began shooting.

Garcia captured the moment in a series of photos, as Vallenilla falls to the ground, then gets
to his feet to escape, as another activist wrapped in the Venezuelan flag and carrying a flimsy
wooden shield tries to give him cover and also comes under fire.

"By then he looked very bad, badly injured," he said.
Vallenilla died in hospital a few minutes later. At least 75 people have been killed since the
protests began in April. The protest outside the air base carried on after shooting.

It was the second time in a week that
media caught on camera military
elements firing weapons at protesters
resulting in deaths. In response the
government has swiftly detained
several members of the security forces
accused of the shootings.
A former small businessman who
owned phone shops, Garcia has been
covering Venezuela for Reuters for
more than a decade. His daughter was
born two weeks before the latest
protests exploded in April. He says the
mood is different than a previous round
of demonstrations three years ago.

"This time people have lost their fear of
authority, they are furious," Garcia said.
"Before, many protesters would run as a
soon as they smelt tear gas, now they don't
run."
He said that over the past month the
protests against Maduro have become more
intense and less organized, meaning
photographers must move with the ebb and
flow of the demonstrators. His team tries to
place itself in different spots, somewhere
high up, somewhere at mid distance and
somewhere close.
"The opposition protests have been getting
more chaotic as the days pass, more
disorganized, now it's not two groups
fighting each other," said Garcia, describing
the challenge of following the protests as the
fracture into small groups.
"Every day is different."

The floating solar field, billed as the largest

collapsed Panji No.1 coal mine that flooded
over a decade ago due to over-mining. When
finished, the solar farm will be made up of
more than 166,000 solar panels which will
convert sunlight to energy.
China's government says it will spend over
$360 billion on clean energy projects by 2020
to help shift the country away from a
dependence on fossil fuels. Already, China is
the leading producer of solar energy, but it
also remains the planet's top emitter of
greenhouse gases and accounts for about
half of the world's total coal consumption.

Protesters march from Kensington on June 16 towards
Grenfell Tower, a 24-story apartment block in North
Kensington, London that was destroyed by a deadly fire last
week.
While the deadly blaze at the Grenfell Tower has prompted an
outpouring of generosity, it has also unleashed rage at the
authorities as the charred tower was cast as a deadly symbol
of a divided society. On the streets around the charred carcass
of the tower on Thursday there was palpable anger as people
accused the local authority of neglecting the safety and
wellbeing of the poor in favor of policies favoring the interests
of the rich.
Scuffles broke out near the Kensington and Chelsea town hall
offices as demonstrators chanting "We want justice!" surged
toward the doors. London has a chronic housing shortage
even in the best of times, and those left homeless by the fire
— already angry over what they see as government inequity
and incompetence — fear being forced out of the British
capital.
The public housing block is located in a neighborhood that
ranks among England's most-deprived areas — in the lowest
10 percent, according to government data for 2015.

A train passes by the remains of
Grenfell Tower on June 16 in London.
Police are considering filing manslaughter
charges related to the fire at a west London
apartment tower that killed at least 79
people.
In its most detailed briefing yet on the
criminal investigation, the Metropolitan
Police on Friday confirmed residents'
suspicions that the June 14 inferno at Grenfell
Tower was touched off by a refrigerator fire.
The government has ordered an immediate
examination of the refrigerator model that
started the blaze, which not been subject to
any product recalls before the fire.
Police and fire officials are also trying to
determine whether the aluminum composite
panels contributed to the rapid spread of the
blaze, which engulfed the 24-story building in
less than an hour.
Some 600 buildings in England could have
been fitted with flammable external panels
like the ones believed to have contributed to
the Grenfell Tower fire, Prime Minister
Theresa May's Downing Street office said.

in China Landslide
by NBC NEWS
Rescuers dig through piles of rock and mud that crashed down over a southwestern Chinese
village on Saturday as 93 people remain missing.
Police stand guard at an entrance to the road that leads to the
village of Xinmo, in Maoxian county in China's Sichuan province,
where a landslide buried the village and more than 100 of its
residents on June 24, 2017.
The landslide came down just after dawn on Saturday, and
rescuers have since been digging through the earth and rocks as
experts say it's unlikely any victims will be found alive. So far, 10
bodies have been recovered with more than 90 still missing. The
avalanche crushed 62 homes, according to authorities.

More than 2,000 firefighters and some two dozen water-dropping aircraft fought the two fires for days and nights amid strong winds and temperatures above 104 Fahrenheit as the country's annual wildfire season started earlier than usual. Traditionally, emergency services gear up for major fires beginning in July. Returns showed Handel, a former Georgia secretary of state, winning about 52 percent of the vote over Ossoff, who won nearly 48 percent in Georgia's 6th Congressional District. Tuesday night's outcome in a special House race was a triumph for the GOP, and the most recent and devastating illustration of the Democrats' problems — from a weak bench and recruiting problems to divisions about what the party stands for today. The freeway runs past La Carlota air base, and soldiers and National Guards fired gas from inside the perimeter of the base to try to clear the highway. • 184. Protesters march from Kensington on June 16 towards Grenfell Tower, a 24-story apartment block in North Kensington, London that was destroyed by a deadly fire last week. While the deadly blaze at the Grenfell Tower has prompted an outpouring of generosity, it has also unleashed rage at the authorities as the charred tower was cast as a deadly symbol of a divided society. On the streets around the charred carcass of the tower on Thursday there was palpable anger as people accused the local authority of neglecting the safety and wellbeing of the poor in favor of policies favoring the interests of the rich. Scuffles broke out near the Kensington and Chelsea town hall offices as demonstrators chanting "We want justice!" surged toward the doors. London has a chronic housing shortage even in the best of times, and those left homeless by the fire — already angry over what they see as government inequity and incompetence — fear being forced out of the British capital. • 185. A train passes by the remains of Grenfell Tower on June 16 in London. Police are considering filing manslaughter charges related to the fire at a west London apartment tower that killed at least 79 people. In its most detailed briefing yet on the criminal investigation, the Metropolitan Police on Friday confirmed residents' suspicions that the June 14 inferno at Grenfell Tower was touched off by a refrigerator fire. The government has ordered an immediate examination of the refrigerator model that started the blaze, which not been subject to any product recalls before the fire. Police and fire officials are also trying to determine whether the aluminum composite panels contributed to the rapid spread of the blaze, which engulfed the 24-story building in less than an hour. Some 600 buildings in England could have been fitted with flammable external panels like the ones believed to have contributed to the Grenfell Tower fire, Prime Minister Theresa May's Downing Street office said.
