3. As night falls in Manila, the Philippine
capital, few of the 700 families living in
the sprawling portside shanty town
known as Market 3 dare to venture out
of their homes.
The crime-ridden maze of sheet metal,
crumbling cement and wooden boards
has become a frontline of the bloody
war on illegal drugs that has defined
Rodrigo Duterte's presidency since it
was unleashed in June 2016.

4. Dozens of Filipinos who lived
along the slum's narrow dirt-
floor alleys have wound up
dead. The community lives in
fear of masked or mystery men
dragging away slum dwellers, or
police and their notorious
"Tokhang" operations, where
officers are required to knock
on doors of suspected dealers
to urge them to surrender. But
those visits have been fatal.

"Many people have left. They
leave because of Tokhang,"
said Nenita Bravo, a 56-year-
old Market 3 resident.
"We can't really count them
anymore," she said, referring to
those killed, adding that she
had witnessed many killings in
the area. "We can't really count
them because there's been so
many."

Yet the frequent police operations and
shadowy murders have hit the slum hard
and those who live there say more blood
has been spilled since he was elected
president on the promise to wipe out drugs
and crime in six months.
“Since Duterte came, that's when there was
a rise in killings. It was pitiful, especially so
for the many women killed," said Visitacion
Castellano, 73, a long-time resident of
Market 3.
“They should have given them years. Put
them in jail. But not kill."

His dream, he says, is to regain

can live, free of drugs and the fear of
police raids.
"My only concern now is for my four
kids to have a different life," he said.

Navotas, as the area was known
before the patchwork of shanty
communities emerged, was the
home of a middle class that lived
off the sea, either as owners of
fishing boats or shipbuilders.
Now employment is in short
supply, with men jumping from
one informal job to the next,
such as scavenging or unloading
fish from returning trawlers.

Her youngest son was killed in June 2016 in
what police said was a sting operation in

quietly, a typical description of the almost
4,000 cases in which police say a suspected
drug dealer was killed.
Police in Navotas could not be reached for

certain that police killed her son in cold blood

indispensable part of their culture

In a country that often bans the sale
of kitchen knives during political
summits, it's still normal to see ethnic
Lisu openly carrying the weapon in
public.
Despite a decades-old hunting ban,
law enforcement remains lax and
Zhang and his friends still hunt birds
and rodents for sport. Before the ban,
Lisu hunters traditionally went for
larger game such as bears and wild
boar.
Lisu technically must have a crossbow
license, which are regulated by
district crossbow associations.

Recently, Rozumiy said he has
seen some improvements since
the start of a Western-backed
reform drive.
"There's a desperate need," he
said, expressing a hope for faster
change. Patchy implementation
of the reform drive has raised
questions about Ukraine's ability
to modernise after a pro-
European uprising in 2013-2014.
Last October, parliament
approved a long-delayed
overhaul of the health system
following international pressure
to speed up reform.
"I hope ... this will give us a
chance but if this turns out to be
yet another bluff, well then we'll
lose everything," Rozumiy said.

Hubble flew into orbit on April 24, 1990,

telescope to be placed in space, Hubble
has circled Earth more than 163,500 times
and traveled even farther than the
distance from Earth to Pluto.
Here's a small sampling of some of the
dazzling images captured by Hubble that
have changed the way we view the
universe.

The Crab Nebula, the result of a
supernova noted by Earth-bound
chroniclers in 1054 A.D., is filled
with mysterious filaments. Not
only are they tremendously
complex, but also they appear to
have less mass than expelled in
the original supernova and a
higher speed than expected from
a free explosion.
The Crab Nebula spans about 10
light-years. In the nebula's center
lies a pulsar: a neutron star as
massive as the sun but with only
the size of a small town. The Crab
Pulsar rotates about 30 times
each second.

Several million young stars are
vying for attention in this image of
a raucous stellar breeding ground
in 30 Doradus, located in the heart
of the Tarantula Nebula. Early
astronomers nicknamed the nebula
because its glowing filaments
resemble spider legs.
30 Doradus is the brightest star-
forming region visible in a
neighboring galaxy and home to
the most massive stars ever seen.
The nebula resides 170,000 light-
years away in the Large Magellanic
Cloud, a small, satellite galaxy of
our Milky Way. No known star-
forming region in our galaxy is as
large or as prolific as 30 Doradus.

A demining team works near the village. In 1991, the village, like the rest
of Iraq, descended deeper into poverty as a result of international
sanctions imposed on the country following the occupation of Kuwait.
Collecting scrap metal and electric wires from military hardware left on
the battlefields became a means of livelihood for many in the village,
and the result was in increase in the number of people maimed.
