2. INTRODUCTON
• Environmental management refers to the
management of modern human society with,
and its impact on, the environment. Because
natural resources are finite and limited, they can
only support a certain population within any
species.
• Environmental management means different
things to different people.
3. DEFINITION OF ENVIRONMENTAL
MANAGEMENT
ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS THAT DEVELOP,
IMPLEMENT, AND MONITOR THE
ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY OF AN
ORGANIzATION.
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT IS A
DECISION – MAKING PROCESS WHICH
REGULATES THE IMPACT OF HUMAN
ACTIVITIES ON THE ENVIRONMENT IN SUCH A
MANNER THAT THE CAPACITY OF THE ENVR.
TO SUSTAIN HUMAN DEVELOPMENT WILL NOT
BE IMPAIRED.
4. CHARACTERISTICS OF
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT
It is often used as a generic term .
It supports sustainable development .
It shows opportunities & also addresses threats &
problems .
It calls for a multidisciplinary approach .
5. AGENCIES/ BODIES RESPONSIBLE
FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT
NGO’S
UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme)
WCED (World Commission on environment & Dev.)
etc………………….
6. DEVELOPMENT
&ENVIRONMENTAL LINKAGES
VARIOUS PROJECTS OF DEVELOPMENT ARE
PLANNED AND IMPLEMENTED BY ALL TYPES OF
GOVERMENTS.
THESE PROJECTS HAVE CERTAIN LINKS WITH
THE ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS.
THE PROJECT MAY BE AT MACRO LEVEL OR AT
THE MICRO LEVEL LIKE CONSTRUCTION OF
ROADS ,RAILWAYS ,DAMS ,FLY OVER BRIDGES
ETC.
10. ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS
IN INDIA
THE MAJOR ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS IN INDIA
ARE :-
POPULATION CONTROL AND HEALTH CARE.
WATER POLLUTION CONTROL IN RIVAR SYSTEMS.
AIR POLLUTION CONTROL IN INDUSTRIES POCKETS.
SOLID WASTE UTILISATION THROUGH RECYCLING.
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AT ALL LEVELS OF
SOCIETY.
14. BIODIVERSITY
Biodiversity is the variety and differences among living organisms
from all sources, including terrestrial, marine, and other
ecosystems.
India is one of the mega biodiversity centers in the world and has
two of the world's 18 ‘biodiversity hotspots’ located in
the Western Ghats and in the Eastern Himalayas.
15. Impact on future changes in climatic
conditions on biodiversity
Greater warming over lands than over the oceans.
Oceans are likely to continue to warm for several centuries due
to greenhouse concentrations which have already taken place.
melting of sea ice.
Droughts and floods in many areas.
There is a real fear among some small island inhabitants that
their lands may totally disappear under water because of rising
sea levels caused by global warming.
17. WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL
MANAGEMENT
Environmental management is the process
by which environmental health is regulated. It does not involve
managing the environment itself, but it is the process of taking
steps and behaviors to have a positive effect on the
environment.
To reduce the risk of these environmental impacts’ occurrence,
we clearly set objectives and targets.
18. The strategies being adopted for the
protection and management of
environment are:-
Protection of Land
Conservation of Water
Protection of Forests
Animals in Our Environment
Our Climate
