3. These are a lot of people who sacrificed their
lives to go out there and fight in defense of
the country and they should not be
undergoing such circumstances.
Most of these homeless veterans are the older
people as well as single men who come from
disadvantaged backgrounds and many of
them served the country during the Vietnam
era.

Services, approximately 64 percent of these
homeless veterans are African-Americans
while 15 percent of them are from the White
and Hispanic races.

veterans who have come from the war in
Afghanistan and Iraq and therefore serious efforts
are required to be put in place to ensure that

New York City together with the Department of

Homeless Services started the Operation Home
initiative in 2007 which saw the reduction of the
number of homeless veterans in the city to 1,989
in the year 2009.

6. Shelter systems were made to ensure that no
veterans sleep on the street since they do not
have a home to go to.
To spearhead this initiative, another initiative
known as Project Torch which was a joint
project by the Department of Homeless
Services and the Department of Veteran
Affairs was created.

7. The main aim of this initiative was to build a
new centralized intake center for the
homeless veterans.
A report from the Department of Homeless
Services indicated that Project Torch was able
to help over 2,300 homeless veterans to
acquire permanent housing since it started in
2007.

permanent housing under this project.
Such efforts in New York City have not only
helped a lot of homeless veterans to move
into permanent housing but they have also
minimized the number of veterans who live in
the shelters of the city.

shelters were relocated to the Borden Avenue
residence in Long Island which is a residence
specifically meant for short-term housing for
veterans.
There are many other initiatives that are
aimed at ensuring that veterans are not
faced with homelessness.

10. The GroHome and Tarranty County housing
projects are also aimed at making sure that
housing for veterans is not an issue.
Critics have however indicated that the
government's efforts towards supporting
veterans have continued to be underfunded
and they are also not targeted towards the
upcoming generation of homeless veterans
as well as their families.

the rise since they started participating in the
Armed forces in the early 90's.
The housing assistance programs should be
