1. Music Video Analysis
Video 2: Saint Raymond – Fall At Your Feet
Callum Burrows (born 30 March 1995) better known by his stage name Saint
Raymond, is a singer-songwriter from Nottingham. Saint Raymond grew up in
Bramcote, Nottingham. He took the 'Saint Raymond' moniker from the street that he
grew up on and his Grandad's name. He began his career playing small gigs and open
mic nights around Nottingham before gaining popularity in 2013 when he released
his self penned, debut extended play "Escapade" on Gabrielle Aplin's Never Fade
Records. Escapade featured heavily in the iTunes album chart upon it's release and
the lead track Fall At Your Feet promoted as iTunes Single of the Week.
2. Camera Work – At the beginning of the Saint Raymond – Fall At Your Feet
song we have the same convention that has been in most of the music videos that I have looked at, the
singer here is holding a guitar the strumming of the guitar matches
that that we here playing. This is done as it helps the viewer match the
Action on the screen. We also see the camera work matching the lyrics
in the song in the middle of the song, ‘round and round we just keep
going’, we have a shot of Callum and the girl at either side of a tree,
the camera is then panning around and around the tree as the song
plays this line. Throughout the video the camera I mainly on him, we
see a few shots here and there of the girl but mostly of him, this is to
suppress the female gaze where the females watching the video will
want to see more of Callum as his audience will be majority female.
We only have the shots on the girl at specific points in the song e.g.
‘you can have it all’ this has been done as at that specific point the
song is directly aimed at here.
Editing – From the start we have the cutting rate witch is quite slow,
it cuts between the shots of Callum singing with his guitar and shots of
him with the girl in the narrative section of the video. This song isn't the fastest song, as we reach the
faster parts of the song the speed in witch each section has been cut increases meaning there is less time
between each shot. Within this editing we have close ups, extreme long shots of both of them. The main
shot that is used is a medium close up as this is that shot that contains
his guitar and the main part of him. The only time we have longer shots
is either when they are trying to get both of the people in the shot or
when an over the shoulder shot has been used. The shots vary but with
every shot changed there is a cut in the video, almost trying to make
sure we are aware that they are changing and moving around in the
video.
3. Saint Raymond – Fall At Your Feet
Sound – The main thing about the video is the music and
the actual song. This is why we have the music playing over
it, the voice is matched by the mouthing of the artist in the
video. In some videos we see the video action and it is
sometimes matched in the song and we here the actually
video in the sound of the music. I feel as though the
narrative is a little lost due to not hearing anything about
the video. The typical convention of a music video is that
the music matches to the singing of the song (the artist).
Mise en Scene – through the video we
have a narrative that is following the
relationship between the girl and the boy.
This gives us two parts to the video, the
narrative part and the part where we see
the artist singing to the music. Normally
there two parts of it are in different locations and have different MES but
in this video we have them both in the same scene. Some of
the sections overlap and some of them are totally different.
The narrative side of the video shows and reiterates exactly
what is going on in the lyrics of the song. All of the video is
set in a field, along a walkway and around a tree. I think that
this has been done so that the main focus is on him and her
and that nothing within the scene is distracting the viewer
from what is actually happening. I feel as though some the
elements from this video will be good to use and take from
our video.
