LESSON PLAN OUTLINE
A SECRET FOR TWO BY QUENTIN REYNOLDS
Difficulty Considerations: French words; unfamiliar setting
Synopsis: After a milkman dies, his friends discover a special relationship between the
milkman and his horse that allowed the milkman to keep on working even after he was
blind.
Goals/Objectives:
• to enjoy a short story and value friendship
• to define theme and recognize themes in a literary work
• to define foreshadowing and identify examples of foreshadowing
Before Reading
Discussion of the biography of the author
Play the audio version of the story so students can hear the pronunciations of the French
words and phrases.
Vocabulary: Connotation and Denotation
During Reading
Reading Strategy: Make Predictions
Presentation of the short story with the ending missing (Purposely)
After Reading
Reading Strategy: Analyze and Verify Predictions
Make the students guess the ending from the facts given. Then discuss foreshadowing.
Make them answer a set of questions that will revolve around how much they
comprehend on the lesson.
Ask them why they think he did not mention his disability to anyone?
Quiz
1. Didn’t Pierre see the vehicle at the last part or did he purposely cross the street?
2. What do you think is the relationship of the author and the setting of the short
story?
3. Define Foreshadowing. Cite the clues or hints that gave you the ending.
Homework
