CLUB CLOSURE
September 23, 2014 - March 31, 2015
Hello USAG Red Cloud and Area I Community!
On September 23, 2014 the Gateway Club will close for much
needed renovations. A new roof, upgraded electrical/lighting,
new bathrooms and many more surprises await when we
finally reopen in Spring of 2015. Until then, Family & MWR
has extended the hours of operation at the Warriors Club,
Casey Bowling and added an ARMP room to Casey Golf. We
haven't forgotten our Gateway delivery customers, and made
arrangements to move pizza delivery service to Warrior's Club
starting next month, October 1st.
Thank you for your understanding and patience, while we make
improvements to better serve you: Our Valued Customers.
Respectfully,
Denise von Wiecki

17. Hoover, like most civilian employees
working in Area I, began another career
after completing U.S. military service.
Shortly after leaving the U.S. Air Force,
Hoover worked a few jobs to include
a short stint as a talent agent, an art
teacher, a car salesman; and eventually
as a Family & MWR employee in 1999.
Hoover is now responsible for the
Area I Outdoor Recreation Center’s
facility operation, providing recreation
opportunities for Area I Soldiers, their
Families and DOD personnel.
One of the most popular activities
offered through ODR falls under a
program called Warrior Adventure Quest
(WAQ). WAQ is described as a ‘high-adventure/
high-adrenaline, outdoor
recreation program combined with
L-LAAD as part of the Army’s holistic

exciting activities such as zip-lining, ATV
riding, paintball, bungee jumping, water
rafting and much more. “WAQ is a unit
level activity program, geared specifically
for US/KATUSA Soldiers,” Hoover
explains, “the Air Force, Navy and
Marines have similar programs that tailor
activities for their own service members.”
The activities offered vary depending
on resources, availability, seasons, and
location; but the intent is the same,
enabling Area I Soldiers to properly
reset after being deployed overseas.
The WAQ program in Area I has grown
by leaps and bounds, Units and Unit
Commanders are encouraged to contact
ODR and learn more about several
activities available for their Soldiers.
Equipment rental is another great
service offered by ODR, enabling the
community to rent mountain bikes,
camping gear, paintball guns/accessories
and much more. There are many
beautiful areas in Korea to visit, and some
of the best ways to do so is by cycling.
For only $5 per day, you can rent a sturdy,
durable and reliable bike, including a
safety helmet for your protection. Rentals
are not limited to individuals, Units and
organizations are welcome to rent tents,

Family and MWR Tour to Suwon Folk Village
The Camp Red Cloud, Better Opportunities
for Single Soldiers (BOSS), hosted a tour to a
Korean Folk Village located in Suwon, South
Korea. The tour is held frequently throughout the year,
providing participants a glimpse back in time, enabling
them to learn a little bit more about Korean culture and
history.
The Korean Folk Village is a tourist destination that
offers plenty of fun and exciting things to do for foreign
and local visitors alike. Upon arrival, participants are
handed tour maps both in Hangeul or English; indicating
that the village is divided into three sections: the Market
Photo & Story by SGT. Micus Ralls

25. Village, the Folk Village and an Amusement Zone for
younger children. Some of the local Korean tourists were
dressed in their traditional Hanbok clothing, immediately
setting the mood even as visitors started entering the
village.
Among the visitors was SPC
Lyka Cabigon from HSC HHBN,
“I wanted to learn and experience
Korean culture; knowing that
the Folk Village preserved some
of the oldest scenes in Korea, I
wanted to see and learn more
about it firsthand.”
Our first stop was the Market
Village where you can purchase traditional and non-traditional
food from food carts, and handicrafts such as
ceramics, jewelry or wood carvings from several souvenir
stores. You can also purchase pottery, fans, musical
instruments and other unique Korean items from small
bazaars scattered throughout the area.
The Folk Village is home to traditional buildings,
gardens and some domestic livestock. This area houses a
majority of the traditional performances, demonstrations,
museums, exhibits, and relics from the Joseon Dynasty.
One particular area featured peasant houses, government
offices and houses of noble families and other wealthy
citizens. To help maintain authenticity, the village staff
portrayed the era by dressing and carrying out their daily
routines such as farming, sewing, blacksmithing, guard
duty and much more.
PFC Lisa Riley, also from
HSC HHBN was curious about
Korea, “I wanted to learn more
about their ancient culture and
how it all started; just discovering
something new was really exciting
to me. In one demonstration I
observed a guy sitting down who
appeared to be sewing, but actually
turned out to be braiding hand-made shoes; and I was
like ‘wow’ that was impressive!”
The Korean Folk Village staff not only offered
handicraft demonstrations, but also allowed onlookers to
participate during demonstration. Due to the authentic
and aesthetic design of this Korean era, several historical

26. Korean dramas have been filmed here, evident by the
number of film banners and posters displayed at certain
areas of the village. “Even while I was in the U.S., instead
of watching American movies, I would watch Korean
movies. So when I got here, I was really looking forward
to seeing those traditional houses, and finally seeing them
and the people that inhabit them was truly amazing,” SPC
Cabigon says.
Arrive early enough, and you may have the opportunity
to see a traditional-Korean wedding. The one we saw
took place underneath a large white canopy in a large
courtyard that was complimented by a traditional table
of fruits and vegetables. The costumes and props are
visually stunning. Every decoration on the bride’s dress
is meant to personify living a long, prosperous life or to
have many sons. In earlier times, the groom would travel
to the bride’s house by horse, and immediately following
the wedding ceremony; he would ride the horse and the
bride will depart for his parent’s house in a palanquin
cart. Although spoken only in Hangeul, the performers
were still able to captivate and awe the large crowd of
audiences, consisting of children on a school trip, tourists
and Korean nationals. This ceremony remains one of the
most popular attractions of the Korean Folk Village tour.
In addition to demonstrations, the Folk Village has
several museum exhibits that tell a long and inspiring
history of the Korean people. Through these displays, a
story is told of how the Korean people, their culture and
their nation have evolved and developed over the past
several thousand years.
The Folk Village area offers performances and
experiences that were very common hundreds of years
ago. Tourists can pay a small fee to go horseback riding,
watch a suspenseful tightrope-walking demonstration,
or watch and sometimes participate in traditional
Korean dance performances. One particular dance was
called the Pungmul, performed by farmers during the
period; consisting of drummers, reed instruments and
26 USAG Red Cloud - Casey and Area I Family and MWR Magazine
27. choreographed dancing.
During the Pungmul performance, dancers wore hats
with long ribbons attached to them. As they danced in
rhythmic patterns, they would spin or flip their hats in a
variety of combinations. The crowd appeared to enjoy
the dance, clapping enthusiastically throughout the
performance. “They put on a show for us. They were
going around in circles, doing high kicks, and they were
dressed in these hats with these tassels that they spun
around and around; it was very entertaining, I really
enjoyed that.” said PFC Riley with a smile on her face.
The Amusement Zone offered many activities mostly for
younger children, but also some that adults can participate
in. Complete with a more modern food court, games and
rides, this area was nice change of pace from the traditional
setting of the folk village. Vendors sold small souvenirs
and toys for children, while some gift shops sold mostly
modern-day items. The Amusement Zone was very
popular for children participating in school trips, prior to
concluding their tours.
The Korean Folk Village is a historically interesting
trip that offers cultural awareness and most of all, fun
and excitement for visitors of all ages. “Out of all the
tours I have taken while in Korea, this was really the most
fascinating; I would recommend this tour to Soldiers or
even families who are visiting Korea for the first time” said
PFC Riley.
All three areas of the tour gave tourists an insight to the
culture and history of the Korean nation and its people.
For W15,000 (Adults), W12,000 (Youth 13-18) and
W10,000 (Children 3-12), you can experience and enjoy a
nice Korean atmosphere with over 260 traditional houses
reminiscent of the Joseon Dynasty. If you want to learn
more about the Korean Folk Village tour, visit your local
Area I Community Activities Center or contact your local
BOSS representative.

SSG Brian S. Moore
COMMUNITY
OLUNTEER
SPOTLIGHT
SSG Brian S. Moore, of 302D BSB, 1ABCT has been an
active volunteer in Area I since February 2013. Since
his arrival, SSG Moore wasted no time and became
involved with the Army Volunteer Corps. Since then, SSG
Moore lent his time volunteering for numerous activities
such as teaching English to ROK Soldiers, assisting the
local Animal Shelter, or participating in Area I beautification
projects such as the Hovey River Cleanup; earning more than
176 certified volunteer hours since he arrived in Korea.
Always looking for ways in which he could improve his
surroundings and make a difference, SSG Moore took
initiative to establish an English Program within the 86th
Maintenance Battalion. This convenience provided increased
participation opportunities for his soldiers, as well as for
soldiers from all companies within the
battalion, to participate in this weekly
program.
SSG Moore would go above and
beyond to ensure he was doing
everything he could to help his
soldiers and the community in which
he lived. Always with a smile, positive
attitude and without complaint,
SSG Moore took it upon himself
to find transportation for soldiers
who want to volunteer, but had no
transportation of their own. On
many occasions, he would use his
own vehicle to transport soldiers to
the volunteer site. His dedication to
volunteering had a direct impact on
the local relationship between U.S.
Army and Republic of Korea Army,
in terms of friendship, alliance and
community outreach.
SSG Moore’s time, effort and
commitment exemplifies the Army’s
Volunteer Corps’ invaluable service
to the Area I Community. For this we
are grateful, and say ‘Thank You, SSG
Moore.’
Congratulations to SSG Moore
for being selected “Volunteer of the
Month” for September 2014!

information on transportation, finance, transitioning and their
next duty station by attending this workshop.
CONVERSATIONAL ENGLISH (ESL) – Classes give non-English
speaking Family members the opportunity to increase their
knowledge of the language through practical application and
practice.
FIRST TERM SOLDIER TRAINING – This important class covers
budgeting and basic money management, saving, credit,
insurance, and other financial topics. This class is mandatory
for all first term soldiers. This training is also available online at
www.myarmyonesource.com.
BANKING & CHECKING ACCUNTS – This course of instruction
will cover that in general, we set up a Checking Account, put
money into it and use checks and debit cards to pay bills or buy
things. Operating a checking account is fairly easy unless you do
not follow the bank’s rules and that is where the Soldier can find
themselves in a lot of trouble. Hopefully, this course will help
preventing any of these things from happening.
THRIFT SAVINGS PLAN (TSP) – This lesson focuses on the
Thrift Savings Plan as the Soldier prepares for his Retirement
Years. This instruction will point out the importance of starting
your TSP as soon as possible to have enough money to retire on
when it is retirement time.
PARENTING A TEEN – Parenting children is hard enough,
and the teen years can be challenging. Discuss issues around
teenagers and how to work with them, without confrontation.
ACS: 730-3107
COUPLES COMMUNICATION – Did he/she just say that? Why
doesn’t my partner hear what I’m saying? He/She never listens
to me! Learn some tips on how to be “heard” and “hear” your
partner, for better understanding of what is trying to be said.
PARENTING EDUCATION (3+) – Sometimes we don’t know
what to do with our kids’ behaviors. Learn some positive ways
to discipline children with natural consequences, not negative
punishment.
ANGER MANAGEMENT – Anger is a normal emotion. It is
what we do with our anger that can cause issues. This class will
give you some skills in how to deal with our anger and turn it
around so anger can motivate us to do something positive and
not just react.
EFMP ENROLLMENT AND UPDATING PROCEDURES
– Do you have family members enrolled in EFMP? Do you
know and understand how EFMP benefits your family? EFMP
updates are mandatory; please see us about the proper
procedures.
