Hello Area I Community Members!!
Here we are, September and the
Kids are back in school, the days are
beginning to shorten and we continue to
march on!
September presents some interesting
things as we begin to close the Camp
Casey Gateway Club for some major
renovations; new roof, restrooms, upgraded electrical and a few
other things as well. To accommodate that closure, we have
plans to lessen and to minimize this closure’s disruption. We
will extend hours at Warriors Club, add additional programs at
the Bowling Center, continue the Gateway Pizza delivery and
more… you can read more about it on page 5. We close the
facility by 23 September and anticipate to reopen with a “Grand
Opening” next Spring. We will keep you posted on the progress
that the Gateway Club is making as we move along.
Please be vigilant of the school kids that are out and about
acclimating back to their studies.
Take the time to peruse the ITZ for all the great programs,
events and happenings that are planned for YOU!
See you out and about!!

CLUB CLOSURE
September 23, 2014 - March 31, 2015
Hello USAG Red Cloud and Area I Community!
On September 23, 2014 the Gateway Club will close for much
needed renovations. A new roof, upgraded electrical/lighting,
new bathrooms and many more surprises await when we
finally reopen in Spring of 2015. Until then, Family & MWR
has extended the hours of operation at the Warriors Club,
Casey Bowling and added an ARMP room to Casey Golf. We
haven't forgotten our Gateway delivery customers, and made
arrangements to move pizza delivery service to Warrior's Club
starting next month, October 1st.
Thank you for your understanding and patience, while we make
improvements to better serve you: Our Valued Customers.
Respectfully,
Denise von Wiecki

Recreation. Adventure. Bonding.
Relaxation. These are among a few
words describing numerous fun activities
that the Area I Outdoor and Recreation
Center has to offer. The ‘Outdoor
Rec’ or ODR as commonly known to
customers, is located underneath the
Camp Casey, Community Activities
Center. Facility operation to include
product rental and recreation services
are handled by Mr. Joseph “Joe”
Hoover, a Family & MWR Outdoor
Recreation Specialist.

Hoover, like most civilian employees
working in Area I, began another career
after completing U.S. military service.
Shortly after leaving the U.S. Air Force,
Hoover worked a few jobs to include
a short stint as a talent agent, an art
teacher, a car salesman; and eventually
as a Family & MWR employee in 1999.
Hoover is now responsible for the
Area I Outdoor Recreation Center’s
facility operation, providing recreation
opportunities for Area I Soldiers, their
Families and DOD personnel.
One of the most popular activities
offered through ODR falls under a
program called Warrior Adventure Quest
(WAQ). WAQ is described as a ‘high-adventure/
high-adrenaline, outdoor
recreation program combined with
L-LAAD as part of the Army’s holistic
approach to reset.’ The program features
exciting activities such as zip-lining, ATV
riding, paintball, bungee jumping, water
rafting and much more. “WAQ is a unit
level activity program, geared specifically
for US/KATUSA Soldiers,” Hoover
explains, “the Air Force, Navy and
Marines have similar programs that tailor
activities for their own service members.”
The activities offered vary depending
on resources, availability, seasons, and
location; but the intent is the same,
enabling Area I Soldiers to properly
reset after being deployed overseas.
The WAQ program in Area I has grown
by leaps and bounds, Units and Unit
Commanders are encouraged to contact
ODR and learn more about several
activities available for their Soldiers.
Equipment rental is another great
service offered by ODR, enabling the
community to rent mountain bikes,
camping gear, paintball guns/accessories
and much more. There are many
beautiful areas in Korea to visit, and some
of the best ways to do so is by cycling.
For only $5 per day, you can rent a sturdy,
durable and reliable bike, including a
safety helmet for your protection. Rentals
are not limited to individuals, Units and
organizations are welcome to rent tents,
BBQ grills, dunk tanks, obstacle courses,

inflatable games, chairs/tables and more,
to use at their next unit/organization-level
event.
“For those who want to hone their
Unit’s combat readiness, or just want
to spend a fun weekend competition
between friends; we certainly have the
game for you----paintball!” Hoover
exclaimed. The ODR facility has a
great selection of paintball gear and
accessories; to include a large stock of
everything paintball related from A to
Z. Potential participants and first-time
players may choose from a selection
of masks, compressors, clothing and
paintball guns. “Paintball tournaments
are held often throughout the year, so
stay on the lookout for the next one!”
Hoover enthusiastically adds.
Want to go camping? Don’t forget to
check out the camping gear selection.
Whether you’re looking for a tent,
a portable BBQ grill, or just need a
sleeping bag, stop by the Outdoor
Recreation Center first! The rates are
affordable for Soldiers and Family
Members which helps those who’re on
a budget, and definitely takes the worry
out of purchasing expensive equipment
for a one-time event.
Area I has a few events to look forward
to in the near future. Bring friends or
family members along on September
20-21 and enjoy an exciting weekend
of kayaking/wake boarding, or simply
relax at a camping trip in the Gangchon
area. Whether you live near Camp Casey,
Hovey, Stanley or Camp Red Cloud----
you are not too far away to enjoy a Deep
Sea Fishing Trip on October 11. If you’re
seasick or fishing is not your cup of tea,
then sign-up instead for a bike tour at
the Discover Dongducheon Mountain
Bike Ride on October 18. These are just
among the few activities that Family &
MWR offers the community, so stop by
today to learn more about upcoming
outdoor recreation activities.
Find excitement, adventure and
relaxation by signing up for an activity at
your local Community Activities Center or
visit the ODR Center at Camp Casey. The
facility has numerous outdoor equipment
available for rent, and the staff can help
you plan or identify several easy and
inexpensive equipment rental options.
Next time you happen to stop by Camp
Casey, visit ‘Joe’ Hoover and learn
more about the many fun and exciting
outdoor and recreation activities you can
experience during your tour in Korea.
You can contact Mr. Hoover at 730-

Culture and History
Family and MWR Tour to Suwon Folk Village
The Camp Red Cloud, Better Opportunities
for Single Soldiers (BOSS), hosted a tour to a
Korean Folk Village located in Suwon, South
Korea. The tour is held frequently throughout the year,
providing participants a glimpse back in time, enabling
them to learn a little bit more about Korean culture and
history.
The Korean Folk Village is a tourist destination that
offers plenty of fun and exciting things to do for foreign
and local visitors alike. Upon arrival, participants are
handed tour maps both in Hangeul or English; indicating
that the village is divided into three sections: the Market

Village, the Folk Village and an Amusement Zone for
younger children. Some of the local Korean tourists were
dressed in their traditional Hanbok clothing, immediately
setting the mood even as visitors started entering the
village.
Among the visitors was SPC
Lyka Cabigon from HSC HHBN,
“I wanted to learn and experience
Korean culture; knowing that
the Folk Village preserved some
of the oldest scenes in Korea, I
wanted to see and learn more
about it firsthand.”
Our first stop was the Market
Village where you can purchase traditional and non-traditional
food from food carts, and handicrafts such as
ceramics, jewelry or wood carvings from several souvenir
stores. You can also purchase pottery, fans, musical
instruments and other unique Korean items from small
bazaars scattered throughout the area.
The Folk Village is home to traditional buildings,
gardens and some domestic livestock. This area houses a
majority of the traditional performances, demonstrations,
museums, exhibits, and relics from the Joseon Dynasty.
One particular area featured peasant houses, government
offices and houses of noble families and other wealthy
citizens. To help maintain authenticity, the village staff
portrayed the era by dressing and carrying out their daily
routines such as farming, sewing, blacksmithing, guard
duty and much more.
PFC Lisa Riley, also from
HSC HHBN was curious about
Korea, “I wanted to learn more
about their ancient culture and
how it all started; just discovering
something new was really exciting
to me. In one demonstration I
observed a guy sitting down who
appeared to be sewing, but actually
turned out to be braiding hand-made shoes; and I was
like ‘wow’ that was impressive!”
The Korean Folk Village staff not only offered
handicraft demonstrations, but also allowed onlookers to
participate during demonstration. Due to the authentic
and aesthetic design of this Korean era, several historical
SPC Lyka Cabigon

Korean dramas have been filmed here, evident by the
number of film banners and posters displayed at certain
areas of the village. “Even while I was in the U.S., instead
of watching American movies, I would watch Korean
movies. So when I got here, I was really looking forward
to seeing those traditional houses, and finally seeing them
and the people that inhabit them was truly amazing,” SPC
Cabigon says.
Arrive early enough, and you may have the opportunity
to see a traditional-Korean wedding. The one we saw
took place underneath a large white canopy in a large
courtyard that was complimented by a traditional table
of fruits and vegetables. The costumes and props are
visually stunning. Every decoration on the bride’s dress
is meant to personify living a long, prosperous life or to
have many sons. In earlier times, the groom would travel
to the bride’s house by horse, and immediately following
the wedding ceremony; he would ride the horse and the
bride will depart for his parent’s house in a palanquin
cart. Although spoken only in Hangeul, the performers
were still able to captivate and awe the large crowd of
audiences, consisting of children on a school trip, tourists
and Korean nationals. This ceremony remains one of the
most popular attractions of the Korean Folk Village tour.
In addition to demonstrations, the Folk Village has
several museum exhibits that tell a long and inspiring
history of the Korean people. Through these displays, a
story is told of how the Korean people, their culture and
their nation have evolved and developed over the past
several thousand years.
The Folk Village area offers performances and
experiences that were very common hundreds of years
ago. Tourists can pay a small fee to go horseback riding,
watch a suspenseful tightrope-walking demonstration,
or watch and sometimes participate in traditional
Korean dance performances. One particular dance was
called the Pungmul, performed by farmers during the
period; consisting of drummers, reed instruments and
26 USAG Red Cloud - Casey and Area I Family and MWR Magazine
choreographed dancing.
During the Pungmul performance, dancers wore hats
with long ribbons attached to them. As they danced in
rhythmic patterns, they would spin or flip their hats in a
variety of combinations. The crowd appeared to enjoy
the dance, clapping enthusiastically throughout the
performance. “They put on a show for us. They were
going around in circles, doing high kicks, and they were
dressed in these hats with these tassels that they spun
around and around; it was very entertaining, I really
enjoyed that.” said PFC Riley with a smile on her face.
The Amusement Zone offered many activities mostly for
younger children, but also some that adults can participate
in. Complete with a more modern food court, games and
rides, this area was nice change of pace from the traditional
setting of the folk village. Vendors sold small souvenirs
and toys for children, while some gift shops sold mostly
modern-day items. The Amusement Zone was very
popular for children participating in school trips, prior to
concluding their tours.
The Korean Folk Village is a historically interesting
trip that offers cultural awareness and most of all, fun
and excitement for visitors of all ages. “Out of all the
tours I have taken while in Korea, this was really the most
fascinating; I would recommend this tour to Soldiers or
even families who are visiting Korea for the first time” said
PFC Riley.
All three areas of the tour gave tourists an insight to the
culture and history of the Korean nation and its people.
For W15,000 (Adults), W12,000 (Youth 13-18) and
W10,000 (Children 3-12), you can experience and enjoy a
nice Korean atmosphere with over 260 traditional houses
reminiscent of the Joseon Dynasty. If you want to learn
more about the Korean Folk Village tour, visit your local
Area I Community Activities Center or contact your local
BOSS representative.

Wolmido Island is located 1 km off the Incheon coast, with a name that describes an island
shape resembling the tail of a half moon. Many people visit during weekends due to its
close proximity to Seoul; and the numerous cafes and seafood restaurants overlooking the
West Sea. The island has several interesting sights such as Culture Street, the Doodle Pillar,
Meeting Square, Arts Square, Performance Square, Good Harvest Square and many other
squares that feature street performers and artists. You can also visit Play Hill, the island’s
theme park, or take a boat cruise that goes around the island every hour. Although young
children are welcome, parents are advised that youngsters in strollers may have a difficult time

Maintenance Battalion. This convenience provided increased
participation opportunities for his soldiers, as well as for
soldiers from all companies within the
battalion, to participate in this weekly
program.
SSG Moore would go above and
beyond to ensure he was doing
everything he could to help his
soldiers and the community in which
he lived. Always with a smile, positive
attitude and without complaint,
SSG Moore took it upon himself
to find transportation for soldiers
who want to volunteer, but had no
transportation of their own. On
many occasions, he would use his
own vehicle to transport soldiers to
the volunteer site. His dedication to
volunteering had a direct impact on
the local relationship between U.S.
Army and Republic of Korea Army,
in terms of friendship, alliance and
community outreach.
SSG Moore’s time, effort and
commitment exemplifies the Army’s
Volunteer Corps’ invaluable service
to the Area I Community. For this we
are grateful, and say ‘Thank You, SSG
Moore.’
Congratulations to SSG Moore
for being selected “Volunteer of the
Month” for September 2014!

www.myarmyonesource.com.
BANKING & CHECKING ACCUNTS – This course of instruction
will cover that in general, we set up a Checking Account, put
money into it and use checks and debit cards to pay bills or buy
things. Operating a checking account is fairly easy unless you do

themselves in a lot of trouble. Hopefully, this course will help
preventing any of these things from happening.
THRIFT SAVINGS PLAN (TSP) – This lesson focuses on the

teenagers and how to work with them, without confrontation.

PARENTING EDUCATION (3+) – Sometimes we don’t know
what to do with our kids’ behaviors. Learn some positive ways
to discipline children with natural consequences, not negative
punishment.
ANGER MANAGEMENT – Anger is a normal emotion. It is
what we do with our anger that can cause issues. This class will
give you some skills in how to deal with our anger and turn it
around so anger can motivate us to do something positive and
not just react.

Here we are, September and the Kids are back in school, the days are beginning to shorten and we continue to march on! September presents some interesting things as we begin to close the Camp Casey Gateway Club for some major renovations; new roof, restrooms, upgraded electrical and a few other things as well. To accommodate that closure, we have plans to lessen and to minimize this closure’s disruption. We will extend hours at Warriors Club, add additional programs at the Bowling Center, continue the Gateway Pizza delivery and more… you can read more about it on page 5. We close the facility by 23 September and anticipate to reopen with a “Grand Opening” next Spring. We will keep you posted on the progress that the Gateway Club is making as we move along. Please be vigilant of the school kids that are out and about acclimating back to their studies. Take the time to peruse the ITZ for all the great programs, events and happenings that are planned for YOU! See you out and about!!

These are among a few words describing numerous fun activities that the Area I Outdoor and Recreation Center has to offer. • 17. Hoover, like most civilian employees working in Area I, began another career after completing U.S. military service. Shortly after leaving the U.S. Air Force, Hoover worked a few jobs to include a short stint as a talent agent, an art teacher, a car salesman; and eventually as a Family & MWR employee in 1999. Hoover is now responsible for the Area I Outdoor Recreation Center’s facility operation, providing recreation opportunities for Area I Soldiers, their Families and DOD personnel. One of the most popular activities offered through ODR falls under a program called Warrior Adventure Quest (WAQ). WAQ is described as a ‘high-adventure/ high-adrenaline, outdoor recreation program combined with L-LAAD as part of the Army’s holistic approach to reset.’ The program features exciting activities such as zip-lining, ATV riding, paintball, bungee jumping, water rafting and much more. “WAQ is a unit level activity program, geared specifically for US/KATUSA Soldiers,” Hoover explains, “the Air Force, Navy and Marines have similar programs that tailor activities for their own service members.” The activities offered vary depending on resources, availability, seasons, and location; but the intent is the same, enabling Area I Soldiers to properly reset after being deployed overseas. The WAQ program in Area I has grown by leaps and bounds, Units and Unit Commanders are encouraged to contact ODR and learn more about several activities available for their Soldiers. Equipment rental is another great service offered by ODR, enabling the community to rent mountain bikes, camping gear, paintball guns/accessories and much more. There are many beautiful areas in Korea to visit, and some of the best ways to do so is by cycling. For only $5 per day, you can rent a sturdy, durable and reliable bike, including a safety helmet for your protection. Rentals are not limited to individuals, Units and organizations are welcome to rent tents, BBQ grills, dunk tanks, obstacle courses, recreation adventure bonding relaxation IN THE ZONE 17
  • 18. inflatable games, chairs/tables and more, to use at their next unit/organization-level event. “For those who want to hone their Unit’s combat readiness, or just want to spend a fun weekend competition between friends; we certainly have the game for you----paintball!” Hoover exclaimed. The ODR facility has a great selection of paintball gear and accessories; to include a large stock of everything paintball related from A to Z. Potential participants and first-time players may choose from a selection of masks, compressors, clothing and paintball guns. “Paintball tournaments are held often throughout the year, so stay on the lookout for the next one!” Hoover enthusiastically adds. Want to go camping? Don’t forget to check out the camping gear selection. Whether you’re looking for a tent, a portable BBQ grill, or just need a sleeping bag, stop by the Outdoor Recreation Center first! The rates are affordable for Soldiers and Family Members which helps those who’re on a budget, and definitely takes the worry out of purchasing expensive equipment for a one-time event. Area I has a few events to look forward to in the near future. Bring friends or family members along on September 20-21 and enjoy an exciting weekend of kayaking/wake boarding, or simply relax at a camping trip in the Gangchon area. Whether you live near Camp Casey, Hovey, Stanley or Camp Red Cloud---- you are not too far away to enjoy a Deep Sea Fishing Trip on October 11. If you’re seasick or fishing is not your cup of tea, then sign-up instead for a bike tour at the Discover Dongducheon Mountain Bike Ride on October 18. These are just among the few activities that Family & MWR offers the community, so stop by today to learn more about upcoming outdoor recreation activities. Find excitement, adventure and relaxation by signing up for an activity at your local Community Activities Center or visit the ODR Center at Camp Casey. The facility has numerous outdoor equipment available for rent, and the staff can help you plan or identify several easy and inexpensive equipment rental options. Next time you happen to stop by Camp Casey, visit ‘Joe’ Hoover and learn more about the many fun and exciting outdoor and recreation activities you can experience during your tour in Korea. • 24. Experience Korean Culture and History Family and MWR Tour to Suwon Folk Village The Camp Red Cloud, Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS), hosted a tour to a Korean Folk Village located in Suwon, South Korea. The tour is held frequently throughout the year, providing participants a glimpse back in time, enabling them to learn a little bit more about Korean culture and history. The Korean Folk Village is a tourist destination that offers plenty of fun and exciting things to do for foreign and local visitors alike. Upon arrival, participants are handed tour maps both in Hangeul or English; indicating that the village is divided into three sections: the Market Photo & Story by SGT. • 25. Village, the Folk Village and an Amusement Zone for younger children. Some of the local Korean tourists were dressed in their traditional Hanbok clothing, immediately setting the mood even as visitors started entering the village. Among the visitors was SPC Lyka Cabigon from HSC HHBN, “I wanted to learn and experience Korean culture; knowing that the Folk Village preserved some of the oldest scenes in Korea, I wanted to see and learn more about it firsthand.” Our first stop was the Market Village where you can purchase traditional and non-traditional food from food carts, and handicrafts such as ceramics, jewelry or wood carvings from several souvenir stores. You can also purchase pottery, fans, musical instruments and other unique Korean items from small bazaars scattered throughout the area. The Folk Village is home to traditional buildings, gardens and some domestic livestock. This area houses a majority of the traditional performances, demonstrations, museums, exhibits, and relics from the Joseon Dynasty. One particular area featured peasant houses, government offices and houses of noble families and other wealthy citizens. To help maintain authenticity, the village staff portrayed the era by dressing and carrying out their daily routines such as farming, sewing, blacksmithing, guard duty and much more. PFC Lisa Riley, also from HSC HHBN was curious about Korea, “I wanted to learn more about their ancient culture and how it all started; just discovering something new was really exciting to me. In one demonstration I observed a guy sitting down who appeared to be sewing, but actually turned out to be braiding hand-made shoes; and I was like ‘wow’ that was impressive!” The Korean Folk Village staff not only offered handicraft demonstrations, but also allowed onlookers to participate during demonstration. Due to the authentic and aesthetic design of this Korean era, several historical SPC Lyka Cabigon PFC Lisa Riley IN THE ZONE 25
  • 26. Korean dramas have been filmed here, evident by the number of film banners and posters displayed at certain areas of the village. “Even while I was in the U.S., instead of watching American movies, I would watch Korean movies. So when I got here, I was really looking forward to seeing those traditional houses, and finally seeing them and the people that inhabit them was truly amazing,” SPC Cabigon says. Arrive early enough, and you may have the opportunity to see a traditional-Korean wedding. The one we saw took place underneath a large white canopy in a large courtyard that was complimented by a traditional table of fruits and vegetables. The costumes and props are visually stunning. Every decoration on the bride’s dress is meant to personify living a long, prosperous life or to have many sons. In earlier times, the groom would travel to the bride’s house by horse, and immediately following the wedding ceremony; he would ride the horse and the bride will depart for his parent’s house in a palanquin cart. Although spoken only in Hangeul, the performers were still able to captivate and awe the large crowd of audiences, consisting of children on a school trip, tourists and Korean nationals. This ceremony remains one of the most popular attractions of the Korean Folk Village tour. In addition to demonstrations, the Folk Village has several museum exhibits that tell a long and inspiring history of the Korean people. Through these displays, a story is told of how the Korean people, their culture and their nation have evolved and developed over the past several thousand years. The Folk Village area offers performances and experiences that were very common hundreds of years ago. Tourists can pay a small fee to go horseback riding, watch a suspenseful tightrope-walking demonstration, or watch and sometimes participate in traditional Korean dance performances. One particular dance was called the Pungmul, performed by farmers during the period; consisting of drummers, reed instruments and 26 USAG Red Cloud - Casey and Area I Family and MWR Magazine

As they danced in rhythmic patterns, they would spin or flip their hats in a variety of combinations. The crowd appeared to enjoy the dance, clapping enthusiastically throughout the performance. “They put on a show for us. They were going around in circles, doing high kicks, and they were dressed in these hats with these tassels that they spun around and around; it was very entertaining, I really enjoyed that.” said PFC Riley with a smile on her face. The Amusement Zone offered many activities mostly for younger children, but also some that adults can participate in. Complete with a more modern food court, games and rides, this area was nice change of pace from the traditional setting of the folk village. Vendors sold small souvenirs and toys for children, while some gift shops sold mostly modern-day items. The Amusement Zone was very popular for children participating in school trips, prior to concluding their tours. The Korean Folk Village is a historically interesting trip that offers cultural awareness and most of all, fun and excitement for visitors of all ages. “Out of all the tours I have taken while in Korea, this was really the most fascinating; I would recommend this tour to Soldiers or even families who are visiting Korea for the first time” said PFC Riley. All three areas of the tour gave tourists an insight to the culture and history of the Korean nation and its people. For W15,000 (Adults), W12,000 (Youth 13-18) and W10,000 (Children 3-12), you can experience and enjoy a nice Korean atmosphere with over 260 traditional houses reminiscent of the Joseon Dynasty. • 44. VUSAG Red Cloud - Casey and Area I SSG Brian S. Moore COMMUNITY OLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT SSG Brian S. Moore, of 302D BSB, 1ABCT has been an active volunteer in Area I since February 2013. Since his arrival, SSG Moore wasted no time and became involved with the Army Volunteer Corps. Since then, SSG Moore lent his time volunteering for numerous activities such as teaching English to ROK Soldiers, assisting the local Animal Shelter, or participating in Area I beautification projects such as the Hovey River Cleanup; earning more than 176 certified volunteer hours since he arrived in Korea. Always looking for ways in which he could improve his surroundings and make a difference, SSG Moore took initiative to establish an English Program within the 86th Maintenance Battalion. This convenience provided increased participation opportunities for his soldiers, as well as for soldiers from all companies within the battalion, to participate in this weekly program. SSG Moore would go above and beyond to ensure he was doing everything he could to help his soldiers and the community in which he lived. Always with a smile, positive attitude and without complaint, SSG Moore took it upon himself to find transportation for soldiers who want to volunteer, but had no transportation of their own. On many occasions, he would use his own vehicle to transport soldiers to the volunteer site. His dedication to volunteering had a direct impact on the local relationship between U.S. Army and Republic of Korea Army, in terms of friendship, alliance and community outreach. SSG Moore’s time, effort and commitment exemplifies the Army’s Volunteer Corps’ invaluable service to the Area I Community. For this we are grateful, and say ‘Thank You, SSG Moore.’ Congratulations to SSG Moore for being selected “Volunteer of the Month” for September 2014!
