Introduction of Concrete

  1. 1. Introduction of Concrete By Naveen K Singh M.Tech IIT Delhi
  2. 2. General Outline  Introduction  Advantages  Disadvantages  Constituents  Type of concrete  Summary
  3. 3. What is Concrete?  Concrete is one of the most commonly used building materials.  Concrete is a composite material made from several readily available constituents (aggregates, sand, cement, water).  Concrete is a versatile material that can easily be mixed to meet a variety of special needs and formed to virtually any shape.
  4. 4. Components of concrete
  5. 5. Concrete made structures
  6. 6. Layout of a ready- mix plant
  7. 7. Advantages  Ability to be cast any shape  Economical  Durable  Fire resistant  Energy efficient  On-site fabrication
  8. 8. Concrete is a viscous fluid
  9. 9. Concrete is durable
  10. 10. Low tensile strength Brittle failure We need to use reinforcement Disadvantages
  11. 11. Cement Water  Aggregates- fine and coarse Chemical admixtures, e.g. superplasticizer, retarders, accelerators, etc.  mineral additions e.g. fly ash, slag, rice husk, etc. Components of Concrete
  12. 12. Cement Components of concrete In construction cements are usually fine powders (100nm to 300 um) that harden on reacting with water. There are many types of cements used:  Portland cements  Ordinary cement  White cement, etc.
  13. 13. Aggregate Aggregate is the granular material, such as sand, gravel, crushed stone, crushed blast-furnace slag, or construction and demolition waste that is used with a cementing medium to produce either concrete or mortar. Fine aggregate less than 5mm Coarse aggregate usually more then 5 mm Density of normal aggregates 2.8 g/cm3 Components of concrete
  14. 14. Components of concrete water Effect of impurities in water
  15. 15. Admixtures Admixtures are defined as materials other than aggregates, cement, and water, which are added to the concrete batch immediately before or during mixing. • The use of admixtures in concrete is now widespread due to many benefits which are possible by their application. Components of concrete Air–entraining admixtures Water reducing admixtures Accelerating admixtures Retarding admixtures
  16. 16. Application of admixtures  To manage early age properties  To manage later age properties  For construction management reasons  For practicality reasons  For durability
  17. 17. Types of concrete Colored concrete Heavyweight concrete Lightweight concrete Recycled concrete Roller-compacted concrete  tremie concrete No-slump concrete etc.
  18. 18. Summary  Concrete is a versatile material  It is usually a strong and durable Materials  It suffers from a low tensile strength and brittle failure  It is a mixture of cheap, locally available materials
