On this slide (before clicking to get the title to show up) I ask the students to guess today’s topic. I usually give 1 point to the team that gets the answer first.
Get students to read along with me
Question Words: review W/H questionsExtreme sports: learn about some extreme sportsGuess the name: class activityGuess the sport: group activityVideo: Winning team (the team with the most points) gets to choose a video to watch at the end
Get students to repeat the sentences are you.
Use this slide as an example. Tell students you will ask them these W/H questions and you want them to answer with sentences like this. Get the student to repeat the answers. If a students can provide a good sentence answering “how do you do it?”, give them 2 points
Same as last slide, but don’t make them repeat the when/where/what sentences; only the how sentence. The W answers are boring and not difficult so it’s a boring exercise for them to repeat it. The last sentence, however, requires some creativity so it’s worth repeating together. Students may make sentences with “hold, go down, sit or slide instead of the “hang” and “ride” that I used. So long as they construct a decent sentence, give them the points. This sport can be done when the weather is good so long as there is no rain, strong winds or snow. But, I stuck to constructing the “when” sentence with just seasons for simplicity’s sake.
Same as last slideEmphasize how dangerous this sport is. They do not climb with any safety equipment whatsoever. If they slip, they will fall and most likely die or be seriously injured. Generally, free climbing is only done on nice sunny days
Same as last slide. Students may construct completely different “how” sentences. Use your own judgment.
Self explanatory
I used portable white boards with markers for this activity. Each team has 1 white board and they must write down their answer within about a 10-15 second time frame. When time’s up, I tell them to raise their whiteboards so that I can see if they guessed correctly and then assign points. It’s actually a relatively easy activity, but the added haste adds to the excitement and they tend to make more mistakes (so I don’t end up with every team giving the correct answer – not really competitive)
