3. Defining Distance Education
Background:
1.The Industrial Revolution in the 19th century (see
Wikipedia) →
2.Developments in various fields of technology (give
examples) →
3.Offered new solutions for delivering instruction →
4.Learners’ interests (in what?) were enhanced →
5.Increase in the subject areas offered by distance
education →
6.Became one of the formal means of education.
4. Defining Distance Education
What is distance education or
distance learning?
Defining the meaning of distance education may provide a
good starting point to recognise its elements.
Use Google to search for:
define:distance education
5. distance education involves two-way
communication between teacher and
student for the purpose of facilitating and
supporting the educational process

learning
7. Distance education & distance
learning:
Distance learning:
is improved capabilities in knowledge and/or
behaviors as a result of mediated experiences that are
constraints by time and/or distance such that the learner
does not share the same situation with what is being
learned.
Distance education:
Is formalized instructional learning where the
time/geographic situation constrains learning by not
offering in-person contact between student and
instructor.

distance learning?
Clarify the definitions using the information
you found in Wikipedia and other sites.
10. Defining Distance Education
What is distance education or
distance learning?
Distance education is defined as Distance education
is an approach that focuses in delivering
teaching to students who are not physically
present in a classroom.
11. Defining Distance Education
Distance education or distance learning?
Add your own point of view here we think it is both,
it depend in the setting. Distance
education is more general. It require
more planning and support. In case of our
university it is distance education while if
the learner open the net and learn a new
topic it is distance learning.
12. Defining Distance Education
History of distance education and
technology (old technology)
the earliest version of distance education,
developed in the mid-nineteenth century in Europe
(Great Britain, France, Germany), and the United
States, and spread swiftly.
13. cont,
Until 1910, the medium of mail was the
dominant delivery system, but new
technologies, such as the lantern slide
and motion picture, emerged to provide
additional, visually-based options for
correspondence study
14. cont,
The most promising new technology that
emerged between 1910 and 1920 was
instructional radio.
15. Cont,
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, cable and
satellite television came into use. The advent of
the Internet and digital applications in the 1990s,
combined with the changing demographics of
the distance education learner, added a whole
new dimension to distance education. These
new technologies bring educational opportunity
to the non-traditional student, and the lure of
economic prosperity to higher educational
institutions.
17. Videoconferencing :
Videoconferencing is the conduct of a
videoconference (also known as a video
conference or video-teleconference) by a
set of telecommunication technologies which
allow two or more locations to communicate
by simultaneous two-way video and audio
transmissions. It has also been called 'visual
collaboration' and is a type of groupware.
18. Fax machine :
is the telephonic transmission of
scanned printed material (both text
and images), normally to a
telephone number connected to a
printer or other output device. The
original document is scanned with
a fax machine (or a telecopier),
which processes the contents (text
or images) as a single fixed graphic
image, converting it into a bitmap,
and then transmitting it through the
telephone system
20. Defining Distance Education
In conclusion, many key features characterize
distance education:
1. The separation of teacher and learner;
2. The separation among learners;
3. The use of one medium to deliver instruction;
and
4. The use of a communication channel to
facilitate interaction and support learners.
