for us, because we couldn‟t save
even ourselves, let alone other

8. This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah
came about: His mother Mary was pledged
to be married to Joseph, but before they
came together, she was found to be pregnant
through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her
husband was faithful to the law, and yet did
not want to expose her to public disgrace, he
had in mind to divorce her quietly.

Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph
son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home
as your wife, because what is conceived in her is
from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son,

10. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord
had said through the prophet: “The virgin
will conceive and give birth to a son, and
they will call him Immanuel (which means
“God with us”).

child? Jesus was not going to be an
ordinary child. He had a great destiny
to fulfill. He was going to save the
world from its sins.

17. In the sixth month of Elizabeth‟s pregnancy,
God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a
town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be
married to a man named Joseph, a
descendant of David. The virgin‟s name was
Mary. The angel went to her and said,
“Greetings, you who are highly favored! The
Lord is with you.”

18. Mary was greatly troubled at his words and
wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But
the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you
have found favor with God. You will conceive and
give birth to a son, and you are to call him
Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son
of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the
throne of his father David, and he will reign over
Jacob‟s descendants forever; his kingdom will
never end.”

The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on
you, and the power of the Most High will
overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be

too much to comprehend.
But that‟s OK. I don‟t need
to understand it to know that
it happened. God provides
us with the truth.
21. In order for Jesus to save us, he had to
be one of us but he also had to be God.
He had to be God because only God is
able to live a perfect life and then have
his death count for all people. Let‟s
look at how Jesus saved us:
22. Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the
Jordan and was led by the Spirit into
the wilderness, where for forty days he
was tempted by the devil. He ate
nothing during those days, and at the
end of them he was hungry.

authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and

on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the
Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from

gave a glimpse of his
magnificent power:
32. One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us

they got into a boat and set out. As they
sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on
the lake, so that the boat was being
swamped, and they were in great danger.

Master, we‟re going to drown!”
He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging
waters; the storm subsided, and all was
calm. “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples.

commands even the winds and the
water, and they obey him.”

37. One day as he was teaching, Pharisees
and teachers of the law, who had come
from every village of Galilee and from

And the power of the Lord was present
for him to heal the sick. Some men came
carrying a paralytic on a mat and tried to

this because of the crowd, they went up

through the tiles into the middle of the
crowd, right in front of Jesus. When

40. The Pharisees and the teachers of the
law began thinking to themselves,
“Who is this fellow who speaks
blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but
God alone?” Jesus knew what they
were thinking and asked, “Why are you
thinking these things in your hearts?

41. “Which is easier: to say, „Your sins are
forgiven,‟ or to say, „Get up and
walk‟? But that you may know that the
Son of Man has authority on earth to
forgive sins…” He said to the paralyzed
man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat
and go home.”

42. Immediately he stood up in front of
them, took what he had been lying on
and went home praising God. Everyone
was amazed and gave praise to God.
They were filled with awe and said,
“We have seen remarkable things
today.”

43. So answer Jesus question: Which
one is more significant: that Jesus
can heal and calm storms, or that he
forgives sins?
