A presentation on Digital Preservation by Rupesh Kumar A, Assistant Professor, Department of Studies and Research in Library and Information Science, Tumkur University, Tumakuru, Karnataka, India.
2. Digital Preservation
⢠Digital preservation is a formal procedure to ensure that
digital information of continuing value remains accessible
andusable.
⢠Digital preservation is the method of keeping digital material
alive so that they remain usable as technological advances
render original hardware and software specification obsolete
(Harrodâs Librarians Glossary).
4. BitstreamCopying
⢠Bitstreamcopying is commonlyknown asâdatabackingupâ
⢠It istheprocess of makingan exactduplicateof a digitalobject.
⢠Bitstreamcopying is nota long-termpreservation technique.
⢠It dealswithdataloss due tohardware and mediafailure.
⢠Bitstreamcopying isoftencombinedwithremotestorage.
5. Refreshing
⢠Refreshingis to copy digital informationfrom long-term
storage mediumto anotherof thesame type.
⢠For example, bitstreams may be copied from an old
CD/DVD/DAT tape to a newCD/DVD/DAT tape .
⢠Refreshingaddresses theproblem of deterioration of physical
storage medium.
6. Durable/PersistentMediaStorage
⢠This involves the use of long-termstoragemediatobackup the
digitaldata.
⢠For example,Gold CDs are usedtoback up datainsteadof
ordinary CDs.
⢠Gold is used in place of superaluminiumcommonlyused in
ordinary CDs.
⢠Gold CDs have higher resistanceto corrosion.
⢠They are moredurablethanordinary CDs.
⢠This durability ensures long-termstorageofdata.
8. TechnologyPreservation
⢠TP involves preserving the technical environment that runs
the system, including operating systems, original application
software, mediadrives, and thelike.
⢠It is sometimescalled the"computermuseum"solution.
⢠This strategy is expensive and hence, cannot be afforded by
smallinstitutions.
9. Digital Archaeology
⢠Digital Archaeology involves methods and procedures to
rescue content from damaged media or from obsolete or
damagedhardware and software environments.
⢠DA is an emergencyrecovery strategy
⢠It usually involves specialized techniques to recover
bitstreams from media that has been rendered unreadable,
eitherdue tophysical damageor hardware failure.
10. Analog Backup
⢠Analogbackup combines the conversion of digital objects into
analogform with theuseof durable analogmedia.
⢠Generally, HD-Rosetta or silver halide microfilms are used to
store data.
12. Data Migration
⢠Data Migration means to copy data, or convert data, from one
technology to another, whether hardware or software,
preserving theessentialcharacteristics of thedata.
⢠Data migration may include replication, normalization,
canonicalization,emulationor encapsulation.
