MARS
According to the best evidence gathered by space probes and astronomers, Mars is an inhospitable planet; more
similar to Earth’s moon than Earth itself. It is frozen solid, blanketed by the mere wisp of an atmosphere – a dry, stark,
seemingly lifeless world. However, certain scientists believe that these conditions could be changed. They have begun
seriously investigate the possibility of transforming Mars into a more Earth-like planet: enriching the atmosphere with
oxygen, obtaining water from the polar ice caps, seeding the planet with plant and animal life from Earth, and eventually
establishing permanent human colonies. “It was once thought to be so far in the future as to be irrelevant,” said
Christopher McKay, a research scientist at the National Aeronautics and space Administration. “But now it is starting to
look practical. We could do it in four or five decades.” The idea of “terra-forming” Mars, as enthusiasts call it, has it
roots in science fiction. But as researchers develop a more profound understanding of how Earth’s ecology supports life,
they have begun to see that it may be possible to create similar conditions on Mars.

May 7th 1840 was the birthday of one of the most famous Russian composers of the nineteenth century: Peter Ilyich
Tchaikovsky, the son of a mining inspector. Tchaikovsky studied music as a child and later studied composition at the St.
Petersburg Conservatory. His greatest period of productivity occurred between 1876 and 1890, during which time he
enjoyed patronage of Madame von Meck, a woman he never met, who gave him a yearly living stipend. Madame von
Meck later terminated her friendship with Tchaikovsky, as well as his living allowance, when she, herself, was facing
financial difficulties. It was during the time of Madame von Meck’s patronage, however, that Tchaikovsky created the
music for which he is most famous, including the music for the ballets of “Swan Lake” and “The Sleeping Beauty”.
Tchaikovsky’s music, well-known for its rich melodic and sometimes melancholy passages, was one of the first that
brought serious dramatic music to dance. Before this, little attention had been given to the music behind the dance.
Tchaikovsky died ostensibly of cholera on November 6 th 1893, though there are now some scholars who argue that he
committed suicide.

Read the passage and choose the correct answer:
If you look closely at some of the early copies of the Declaration of Independence, beyond the flourished
signature of John Hancock and the other 55 men who signed it, you will also find the name of one woman, Mary
Katherine Goddard. It was she, a Baltimore printer, who published the first official copies of the Declaration, the first
copies that included the names of its signers and therefore heralded the support of all thirteen colonies.
Mary Goddard first got into printing at the age of twenty-four when her brother opened a printing shop in
Providence, Rhode Island, in 1762. When he proceeded to get into trouble with his partners and creditors, it was Mary
Goddard and her mother who were left to run the shop. In 1765 they began publishing the Providence Gazette, a weekly
newspaper. Similar problems seemed to follow her brother as he opened businesses in Philadelphia and again in
Baltimore. Each time Ms. Goddard was brought in to run the newspapers. After starting Baltimore's first newspaper, The
Maryland Jounal, in 1773, her brother went broke trying to organize a colonial postal service. While he was in debtor's
prison, Mary Katherine Goddard's name appeared on the newspaper's masthead for the first time.
When the Continental Congress fled there from Philadelphia in 1776, it commissioned Ms. Goddard to print the
first official version of the Declaration of Independence in January 1777. After printing the documents, she herself paid
the post riders to deliver the Declaration throughout the colonies.
During the American Revolution, Mary Goddard continued to publish Baltimore's only newspaper, which one
historian claimed was "second to none among the colonies." She was also the city's postmaster from 1775 to 1789
-appointed by Benjamin Franklin - and is considered to be the first woman to hold a federal position.

Read the passage and choose the best answer:
Coal, oil and natural gas supply modern civilization with most of it power. However, not only are supplies of
these fuels limited, but they are a major source of pollution. If the energy demands of the future are to be met without
seriously harming the environment, existing alternative energy sources must be improved or further explored and
developed. These include nuclear, water, solar, wind, and geothermal power, as well as energy from new, nonpolluting
types of fuels. Each of these alternatives, however, has advantages and disadvantages.
Nuclear power plants efficiently produce large amounts electricity without polluting the atmosphere, however,
they are costly to build and maintain, and they pose the daunting problem of what to do with nuclear wastes.
Hydroelectric power is inexpensive and environmentally safe, but impractical for communities located far from moving
water. Harnessing energy from tides and waves has similar drawbacks. Solar power holds great promise for the future but
methods of collecting and contrasting sunlight are as yet inefficient, as are methods of harnessing wind power.
Every source of energy has its disadvantages. One way to minimize them is to use less energy. Conservation
efforts coupled with renewable energy resources, such as a combination of solar, water, wind, and geothermal energy and
alternative fuels, such as alcohol and hydrogen, will ensure supplies of clean, affordable energy for humanity's future.

C. Solar and wind are not promising for the future. D. Most alternative energy sources have been proven to be
impractical

Read the passage and choose the correct answers.
A pilot cannot fly a plane by sight alone. In many conditions, such as flying at night and landing in dense fog, a
pilot must use radar, an alternative way of navigating. Since human eyes are not very good at determining speeds of
approaching objects, radar can show a pilot how fast nearby planes are moving. The basic principle of radar is exemplified
by what happens when one shouts in a cave. The echo of the sounds against the walls helps a person determine the size of
the cave. With radar, however, the waves are radio waves instead of sound waves. Radio waves travel at the speed of
light, about 300,000 kilometers in one second. A radar sends out a short burst of radio waves. Then it receives the echoes
produced when the waves bounce off the objects. By determining the time it takes for the echoes to return to the radar set,
a trained technician can determine the distance between the radar set and the objects. The word 'radar', in fact, gets its
name from the term 'radio detection and ranging'. 'Ranging' is the term for detection of the distance between an object and
the radar set. Besides being of critical importance to pilots, radar is essential for air traffic control, tracking ships at sea,
and for tracking weather systems and storms.

It is frozen solid, blanketed by the mere wisp of an atmosphere – a dry, stark, seemingly lifeless world. However, certain scientists believe that these conditions could be changed. They have begun seriously investigate the possibility of transforming Mars into a more Earth-like planet: enriching the atmosphere with oxygen, obtaining water from the polar ice caps, seeding the planet with plant and animal life from Earth, and eventually establishing permanent human colonies. “It was once thought to be so far in the future as to be irrelevant,” said Christopher McKay, a research scientist at the National Aeronautics and space Administration. “But now it is starting to look practical. We could do it in four or five decades.” The idea of “terra-forming” Mars, as enthusiasts call it, has it roots in science fiction. But as researchers develop a more profound understanding of how Earth’s ecology supports life, they have begun to see that it may be possible to create similar conditions on Mars. 16. A. a process for adapting plants to live on Mars B. a means of transporting materials through space C. a method of building housing for colonists on Mars D. a system of creating Earth-like conditions on other planets 20. May 7th 1840 was the birthday of one of the most famous Russian composers of the nineteenth century: Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the son of a mining inspector. Tchaikovsky studied music as a child and later studied composition at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. His greatest period of productivity occurred between 1876 and 1890, during which time he enjoyed patronage of Madame von Meck, a woman he never met, who gave him a yearly living stipend. Madame von Meck later terminated her friendship with Tchaikovsky, as well as his living allowance, when she, herself, was facing financial difficulties. It was during the time of Madame von Meck’s patronage, however, that Tchaikovsky created the music for which he is most famous, including the music for the ballets of “Swan Lake” and “The Sleeping Beauty”. Tchaikovsky’s music, well-known for its rich melodic and sometimes melancholy passages, was one of the first that brought serious dramatic music to dance. Before this, little attention had been given to the music behind the dance. Tchaikovsky died ostensibly of cholera on November 6 th 1893, though there are now some scholars who argue that he committed suicide. 36. The best title for this passage could be ______. It was she, a Baltimore printer, who published the first official copies of the Declaration, the first copies that included the names of its signers and therefore heralded the support of all thirteen colonies. Mary Goddard first got into printing at the age of twenty-four when her brother opened a printing shop in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1762. When he proceeded to get into trouble with his partners and creditors, it was Mary Goddard and her mother who were left to run the shop. In 1765 they began publishing the Providence Gazette, a weekly newspaper. Similar problems seemed to follow her brother as he opened businesses in Philadelphia and again in Baltimore. Each time Ms. Goddard was brought in to run the newspapers. After starting Baltimore's first newspaper, The Maryland Jounal, in 1773, her brother went broke trying to organize a colonial postal service. While he was in debtor's prison, Mary Katherine Goddard's name appeared on the newspaper's masthead for the first time. When the Continental Congress fled there from Philadelphia in 1776, it commissioned Ms. Goddard to print the first official version of the Declaration of Independence in January 1777. After printing the documents, she herself paid the post riders to deliver the Declaration throughout the colonies. During the American Revolution, Mary Goddard continued to publish Baltimore's only newspaper, which one historian claimed was "second to none among the colonies." She was also the city's postmaster from 1775 to 1789 -appointed by Benjamin Franklin - and is considered to be the first woman to hold a federal position. 36. Read the passage and choose the best answer: Coal, oil and natural gas supply modern civilization with most of it power. However, not only are supplies of these fuels limited, but they are a major source of pollution. If the energy demands of the future are to be met without seriously harming the environment, existing alternative energy sources must be improved or further explored and developed. These include nuclear, water, solar, wind, and geothermal power, as well as energy from new, nonpolluting types of fuels. Each of these alternatives, however, has advantages and disadvantages. Nuclear power plants efficiently produce large amounts electricity without polluting the atmosphere, however, they are costly to build and maintain, and they pose the daunting problem of what to do with nuclear wastes. Hydroelectric power is inexpensive and environmentally safe, but impractical for communities located far from moving water. Harnessing energy from tides and waves has similar drawbacks. Solar power holds great promise for the future but methods of collecting and contrasting sunlight are as yet inefficient, as are methods of harnessing wind power. Every source of energy has its disadvantages. One way to minimize them is to use less energy. Conservation efforts coupled with renewable energy resources, such as a combination of solar, water, wind, and geothermal energy and alternative fuels, such as alcohol and hydrogen, will ensure supplies of clean, affordable energy for humanity's future. 41. In many conditions, such as flying at night and landing in dense fog, a pilot must use radar, an alternative way of navigating. Since human eyes are not very good at determining speeds of approaching objects, radar can show a pilot how fast nearby planes are moving. The basic principle of radar is exemplified by what happens when one shouts in a cave. The echo of the sounds against the walls helps a person determine the size of the cave. With radar, however, the waves are radio waves instead of sound waves. Radio waves travel at the speed of light, about 300,000 kilometers in one second. A radar sends out a short burst of radio waves. Then it receives the echoes produced when the waves bounce off the objects. By determining the time it takes for the echoes to return to the radar set, a trained technician can determine the distance between the radar set and the objects. The word 'radar', in fact, gets its name from the term 'radio detection and ranging'. 'Ranging' is the term for detection of the distance between an object and the radar set. Besides being of critical importance to pilots, radar is essential for air traffic control, tracking ships at sea, and for tracking weather systems and storms.
