• Broadband refers to the
telecommunication in which a
wide band of frequencies is
available to transmit
information. Information can
be multiplexed and sent on
many different frequencies or
channels within the band
concurrently, allowing more
information to be transmitted
in a given amount of time

To research and compare different
technology options available, in the
locality, to me as a sole trader operating
as a business from my home in
Glenageary, Co.Dublin.
4. Glossary Of Terms
Some Helpful Definitions
• DSL – Digital Subscriber Line – Provides Digital data
transmission over the wires of a television network
• Coxial Cable - an electrical cable with an inner conductor
surrounded by a flexible, tubular insulating layer, surrounded
by a tubular conducting shield.
• MB – A High Speed connection allowing for maximum
downloading to a certain amount.
• GB – A unit of computer memory or data storage capacity
equal to 1024 megabytes
• ISP – Internet Server Provider – A company that provides
access to the internet.
• KBPS – Kilobytes per Second
6. Mobile Broadband
• Mobile Broadband internet access without the
need for a fixed land line. It’s convenient and
portable, allowing you to connect wirelessly to
the internet wherever you are, on the Mobile
network.
• It means you can do business your way, from
anywhere.
7. ADSL Broadband
• Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) is a
type of Digital Subscriber Line technology, a data
communications technology that enables faster
data transmission over copper telephone lines
than a conventional voiceband modem can
provide.
• It is the most common type of Broadband
8. Wireless Broadband
• Wireless Broadband refers to technology that
provides high-speed wireless Internet access or
computer networking access over a wide area.

• Vodafone is a Mobile broadband uses the same
technology as your mobile phone, except instead of
making a voice call over the phone, your modem makes a
data call across the Vodafone network which connects
you to the internet. Mobile broadband gives you all the
benefits of regular broadband, with the added bonus of
wireless mobilty.

• Eircom is an Irish Telecommunications company.
• They provide a range of DSL Broadband and telephone to
both home and business.
• They are Irelands largest telecommunications provider

• Imagine offers a wireless, digital communications system
that is intended for wireless Metropolitan area Networks
• Provides DSL Broadband, Home Phone and Mobile
Broadband connections.

• They offer DSL Broadband and Home Phone.

• Strencom offer a complete networking solution for

• Previously more commonly known as Chorus NTL

• After researching into the various options for Broadband in my
area I have come to the conclusion that UPC, the Fibre Optic
Broadband is the best suited for a small business start up.
• This option is significantly cheaper than the other
networks, which is a fundamental element to consider when
starting up a small business.
• There is a 24 hour online connection – no time restrictions
• Included in this package I get 15 email addresses which is an
extremely positive factor to consider for choosing a
broadband for a business.
• Overall, when considering the Technological Specifications and
the Costs applied to all the various broadband companies UPC
came out on top as a broadband supplier in the area of
Glenageary.
