2. Green Building – An Overview:
Over the past 20 years, this fast-paced
industry has led to a lot of building
without a lot of thinking.
3. These homes were complex and contained
materials that cause asthma, cancer, allergy
problems, and known for being ‘energy hogs.’
4. The industry is moving away from this
model over the past few years. Home
sizes are shrinking…

5. Construction is not the only industry to
take another look at over-consumption…
Take a look at advertising over the last year:
• Target advertising
• Back to the basics – Allstate
• More emphasis on family
• Healthy foods
• Less diet pills, more exercise
• Hybrids & smaller cars
• 50,000 people expected to attend
Earth Day Expo
6. What Does This All Mean?
Our society is moving away from more
quantity, less quality, to more quality,
more value.
7. What Does This All Mean?
DTA designs a sustainable home:
• Healthy
• Energy Efficient
• Affordable
• Designed for today’s buyer
8. What is Mainstream Green?
• Designing homes as a ‘whole house system’ makes green
building affordable for everyone.
• Breakdown into three major considerations:
1. Energy savings for owner
2. Providing a healthy home
3. Constructing a home that will last, with no
negative effects on the environment.
9. The 2009 Affordable Green Home:
DTA’s green philosophy is:
• An energy efficient home
• A healthy home
• A sustainable home (low maintenance / operating expenses)
• 2009 GreenBuilder Magazine
“Green Home of the Year”
• Two 2009 Platinum Best in
American Living Awards for “Best
Affordable Home” – Attached and
Detached categories
10. The 2009 Affordable Green Home:
Our team analyzed the following:
• Analysis of site and
environment
• Analysis of efficient structural
systems and plan design
• Analysis of construction
methodology and building
materials/systems used.
11. The 2009 Affordable Green Home:
• Deep overhangs designed for sun shading
• Shed roofs
• Deep porch
• Windows on South side
12. The 2009 Affordable Green Home:
• 2’ module = minimized waste
- Simple 6 corner house reduces
waste and labor.
• Roof pitch - no waste of roof sheathing
• Consider furniture placement &
eliminate rooms too big or small.
• Minimized wasted circulation space
(typically 15%)
• No A/C, 2 windows per room
13. The 2009 Affordable Green Home:
• Windows and doors placed in 24” module to reduce
added framing members
- This is where an architect benefits you!
• Walls built off-site as a system to cut waste and time –
waste was recycled.
• Originally designed for slab on grade construction
• Built w/ sealed crawl space
14. The 2009 Affordable Green Home:
DTA analyzed actual costs of each system and ROI to determine
what was most beneficial.
- This is where an architect benefits you!
• Standard code home:
$1,632 / year
•Affordable Green Home:
$709 / year
= Cost savings of nearly
$900 / year
•This means you can spend
nearly $15,000 more and
break even each month.
27. The Affordable Home Plan:
Annual Energy Costs:
1,765 Sq. Ft. = $709
The Cory Lake Residence:
Annual Energy Costs with GeoThermal:
2,750 Sq. Ft. + Bsmt = 4,750 Sq. Ft. = $400
Annual Energy Costs Built to Code:
2,750 Sq. Ft. + Bsmt = 4,750 Sq. Ft. = $3,000
28. Throughout the home building process, live
life, share dreams, experience design to have
fun!
