- Intelliwave was “born” out of the needs of the construction industry.Over-runs of schedule and cost plague the construction industry.The result is billions of dollars in waste … and excessive risk for project stake-holders. Reports from CII (the Construction Industry Institute) strongly correlate project overruns with lack of visibility of materials, personnel and equipment.Furthermore, research results just reported at the CII annual meeting validate a long debated point. Statistic data now confirms that projects which more organized and do not adopt best practices such as materials management and use of advanced technology show both improved productivity and improved safety performance.<Press return to trigger fade-in of CII pie chart>In 2008, a study done on craft productivity by the Construction Industry Institute (CII) estimated that up to 57% of construction spending is waste, translating to nearly $400B annually when plotted against the 2008 design and construction spending projections by ENR.On average only 27% of crew’s time is actually spent with hands on the tools performing direct construction work. Too much time is spent on waiting, often searching for materials and equipment that may be covered in dust or snow.Not only is this un-productive, but it also causes serious safety issues as crews spend excessive “travel time” hunting for materials, equipment and tools.
- In 2008, CII also published results of a field trial study that demonstrated and documented the high potential benefits through the use of tracking technology such as RFID for construction projects.>>> This sparked the birth of Intelliwave.<Press return to bring text to the screen>Intelliwave – a Canadian company – was founded in 2007, in Edmonton Alberta. Intelliwave partnered with JV Driver, a CII member company and module fabricator serving the Canadian Oil Sands. The focus of the partnership was to take the use of RFID technology from the state of R&D concept / field trials to an industrial strength integrated product solution that could be reliably implemented on large scale construction projects.This was no simple task, but the result is a proven product, with demonstrable project successes. Intelliwave is the global leader in providing asset tracking solutions for large industrial construction projects using world-class Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and other wireless sensor and network technologies. Our key differentiator is a turnkey construction product that works reliably in the field.A construction company can try to simply buy off-the-shelf RFID hardware components and leverage a systems integrator to cobble together a working solution. However, do not expect to obtain desirable results through such an approach. This is not scalable and has already been tried unsuccessfully by a number of construction companies. Working closely with JV Driver, with support from major Owner-Operators from the Oil & Gas and Mining industries, Intelliwave has investigated considerable time and effort to develop a integrated product solution, including proprietary and patented hardware and software product modules, exclusively focused to address the needs of construction projects.

- Let’s now review some of the individual hardware product modules operating on the Intelliwave Visibility Platform. Intelliwave partners with various hardware manufactures to package, distribute and support a number of hardware product modules as part of the integrated product solution. In addition, Intelliwave itself designs, assembles and delivers patented RFID reader assemblies that combine multiple component technologies into a working product module.<Press return to bring up the image with the Sensor Tags>Sensor Tags - The Intelliwave Visibility Platform supports a broad array of sensor tags for tracking project resources, ranging from barcode, to passive RFID, active RFID and GPS tracking devices. The Intelliwave Visibility Platform is independent of the sensor tag and allows multiple tag types to be used simultaneously and in combination on a construction project, depending upon the specific project needs. This image highlights a sample of the primary software modules built on-top of the Intelliwave Visibility Platform.SiteSense – the software module most widely utilized to-date – is a web-based application that allows a user to quickly and easily locate a physical asset through a “Google-map” like search.GlobalSense operates in a similar fashion to SiteSense, but displays the location of assets in transport from one site to another on a map display. The Find-IT module is a mobile field application that allows a user to quickly locate a asset in the field. Once a user locates a physical asset on the overhead map image in SiteSense, the Find-IT module works in conjunction with a RFID reader in real-time, and provides both a audible and visual “Geiger-counter” like feature to rapidly pin-point the location of a asset.The Tag-IT module is a mobile field application to easily assign a sensor tag to a physical asset, such as a material item or equipment item.
