FETAL ALCOHOL SPECTRUM DISORDER
CASE STUDY

MEETING THE FAMILY
 I met this couple that had just moved from
North Bay
 told me about the twin brothers 3 year old
Simon and Thomas that they are adopting
 and the twins have been diagnosis with Fetal
Alcohol Syndrome
 They feel overwhelmed because of the
diagnosis and the move ,and wonder what
services there are in Toronto to help the boys
THE FAMILY
 So from what I know the boys are both showing
signs of cognitive delay and are having a hard
time with impulse control
 As for the parents I think they would need
services that are close to home
 And if they are thinking of putting the boys in
daycare to have good commutation with the
daycare staff
FETAL ALCOHOL SPECTRUM DISORDER
 Women drinking alcohol during pregnancy
 FASD is one of the top causes of developmental
delay
 So result for the mother drinking during her
pregnancy is :
The child falling into one of these characteristics:
Growth Patterns, Facial Features and Central
nervous system problems
#1 GROWTH PATTERNS
 Growth is slowed down
 Body size is small then the average height for
the child’s age
 And both head size and weight are both smaller
as well
#2 FACIAL FEATURES
 The middle of the face is very flat
 Eye opening is small
 Upper lip is thin
 From the upper lip to the base of the nose it is
very smooth
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
 Developmental delay (Cognitive)
 Forgetting things
 May not understand instructions
 Learning disabilities
 Poor social skills
 Maybe have a hard time understanding right from
wrong
 Gets distracted easily/or cannot stay focus
(impulse control)
CHANGES IN ENVIRONMENT
GROSS/FINE MOTOR
 For gross motor you
should have a lot of
movement like:
 Dance inside or outside
 Having the children try
going up and down the
slide
 So they can use their
large muscles
 Fine motor is using
things like your fingers
joints
 Having a scenery bin with
pasta and cereal that are
shaped like the letter O
 Slide on grips for any
item the child might use
and can hold
VISUAL
 Lots of natural light coming in
 Use non-fluorescent light
 The colors on the wall shouldn’t be to bright
 Lots of storage
NOISE AND HEARING (AUDITORY)
 Have relaxing music
 Practice what to do for a fire drill before hand
 Have a quite area
COGNITIVE
 Reading: make the story shot but keep the
interest of the children in mind
 try to do different voices for each character
 Ask questions so the children can guess what
happens next
 And focus on one topic
 Math: count as often as you can
 Do matching and sorting actives
 not to challenging
 Hands on material
 Music/ Drama: songs that have actions
 Change the words so it is easier to sing
 Do it in a small group
 and get sound proof ear muffs to reduce sound
MEMORY
 Have a consistent, predictable routine that
follows the same pattern
 Visual
 Hands on activities
 New item must be slowly transitioned to the
children and can understand what is going on
ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY
 Have stress relive items : stress ball
 Short exercises: deep breathing
SOCIAL
 All materials should have illustrations on them
 Ask the child to show you what you told them : “
can you show me how to hang up your coat?”
 But don’t ask to many questions
 And speak slowly
EMOTIONAL
 Remind children what happens when they don’t
follow the rules of the classroom
 Don’t overwhelm the children with too many
words

  • 1. FETAL ALCOHOL SPECTRUM DISORDER CASE STUDY By Tracie Ramanand

MEETING THE FAMILY  I met this couple that had just moved from North Bay  told me about the twin brothers 3 year old Simon and Thomas that they are adopting  and the twins have been diagnosis with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome  They feel overwhelmed because of the diagnosis and the move ,and wonder what services there are in Toronto to help the boys
  • 3. THE FAMILY  So from what I know the boys are both showing signs of cognitive delay and are having a hard time with impulse control  As for the parents I think they would need services that are close to home  And if they are thinking of putting the boys in daycare to have good commutation with the daycare staff
  • 4. FETAL ALCOHOL SPECTRUM DISORDER  Women drinking alcohol during pregnancy  FASD is one of the top causes of developmental delay  So result for the mother drinking during her pregnancy is : The child falling into one of these characteristics: Growth Patterns, Facial Features and Central nervous system problems
  • 5. #1 GROWTH PATTERNS  Growth is slowed down  Body size is small then the average height for the child’s age  And both head size and weight are both smaller as well
  • 6. #2 FACIAL FEATURES  The middle of the face is very flat  Eye opening is small  Upper lip is thin  From the upper lip to the base of the nose it is very smooth
  • 7. CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM  Developmental delay (Cognitive)  Forgetting things  May not understand instructions  Learning disabilities  Poor social skills  Maybe have a hard time understanding right from wrong  Gets distracted easily/or cannot stay focus (impulse control)
  • 9. GROSS/FINE MOTOR  For gross motor you should have a lot of movement like:  Dance inside or outside  Having the children try going up and down the slide  So they can use their large muscles  Fine motor is using things like your fingers joints  Having a scenery bin with pasta and cereal that are shaped like the letter O  Slide on grips for any item the child might use and can hold
  • 10. VISUAL  Lots of natural light coming in  Use non-fluorescent light  The colors on the wall shouldn’t be to bright  Lots of storage
  • 11. NOISE AND HEARING (AUDITORY)  Have relaxing music  Practice what to do for a fire drill before hand  Have a quite area
  • 12. COGNITIVE  Reading: make the story shot but keep the interest of the children in mind  try to do different voices for each character  Ask questions so the children can guess what happens next  And focus on one topic
  • 13.  Math: count as often as you can  Do matching and sorting actives  not to challenging  Hands on material
  • 14.  Music/ Drama: songs that have actions  Change the words so it is easier to sing  Do it in a small group  and get sound proof ear muffs to reduce sound
  • 15. MEMORY  Have a consistent, predictable routine that follows the same pattern  Visual  Hands on activities  New item must be slowly transitioned to the children and can understand what is going on
  • 16. ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY  Have stress relive items : stress ball  Short exercises: deep breathing
  • 17. SOCIAL  All materials should have illustrations on them  Ask the child to show you what you told them : “ can you show me how to hang up your coat?”  But don’t ask to many questions  And speak slowly
  • 18. EMOTIONAL  Remind children what happens when they don’t follow the rules of the classroom  Don’t overwhelm the children with too many words
