What future for IPTV, Multimedia access, and DRM?
• Often the future is not the result of one, but many trends occurring in
parallel, which at times, when interacting, can lead to results not
easily predictable when considering only one or a subset of such
trends

A look into the past
• What is fundamentally different between the old TV of 40s and today’s
(IP)TV ?

A rather simplistic and evolutionary future …
• Consequences of Moore’s law
Higher resolution content
Larger bandwidth networks
Bigger storage capacities
More sophisticated codecs/processing
• No DRM or light DRM broadcast models
Pay more and get DRM free content
Pay monthly fee and get as much content as you want

A more complex and maybe more likely future
• Prosumer (producer/consumer) models
Social networks
See Leonardo Chiariglione’s presentation on Media Delivery
Value Chain (DMP)
• New types of access to content
Podcasting
P2P
• New security problems
→ Not only rights protection issues but also authentication and data
integrity issues

A more complex and maybe more likely future
• Quality of Experience rather than Quality of Service
Maximize experience and not signal fidelity
User-centric optimization rather than system optimization
• Free content based business models
Co-existing with paying content based business models
Generating revenues from advertizing, etc.
• New content
→ 3D, UHTV, HDR, …

Last words
• Prediction is very difficult, especially about the future
