This document discusses several philosophies and frameworks for understanding reality, including nominalism. Nominalism holds that only particular objects exist in the world and general ideas are merely names without real existence. The document explores how nominalism can provide scaffolding to support understanding of metaphysical questions about reality. It also discusses how a nominalist view that denies universal concepts like "humanity" could contribute to greater inhumanity in war by viewing people as merely particular objects. Overall, the document examines nominalism and other terms as lenses for framing our understanding of reality and real-world objects and experiences.

12. NOMINALISM AS A FRAMEWORK
A FRAMEWORK FOR INTERPRETING LIFE .
Nominalism says “universals or general ideas are
mere names without any corresponding reality. Only
particular objects exist. Properties, numbers, and
sets are mere features of the way of considering the
things that exist.

provide scaffolding.

14. NOMINALISM AS SCAFFOLDING
SUPPORTS METAPHYSICS.
Nominalism is a metaphysical framework.
General or abstract terms and predicates exist,
while universals or abstract objects, which often
correspond to these terms, do not exist.

16. NOMINALISM AND WAR
POWERS THE INHUMANITY OF WAR.
Nominalism denies the real being of universals on
the ground that the use of a general word
(e.g., “humanity”) does not imply the existence of a
general thing named by it. The nominalist position
does not necessarily deny, however, that there must
be some similarity between the particular things to
which the general word is applied.

Metaphysics is a traditional branch of philosophy concerned with explaining the fundamental nature of being and the world that encompasses it—although the term is not easily defined. Traditionally, metaphysics attempts to answer two basic questions in the broadest possible terms:
What is ultimately there?
What is it like?
Time, when viewed by the movement of the sun, can appear in an atrium as a metaphysical clock.
Mastering an abstract vocabulary enables you to signify concepts, qualities and ideas.
To predicate is to connote. To predicate is to imply, as in “your retraction predicates a change of attitude”.
We approach reality through an understanding of nominalism.
You listen with gear to concepts that may not be clear.
Nominalism permits you to abandon the abstract in preference for realia.
Nominalism accepts abstract terms but rejects universal abstract objects.
Nominalism empowers man’s inhumanity to man.

Your intellect is a function of your vocabulary and the framework you apply to realia.
You frame much of your world through cyber agents such as Twitterbots and Facebook newsfeeds.
As part of this active lecture, please conceptualise your current experience by sharing a thought bubble, pull quote, a contextual placement and a key frame that flows from this lecture on realia and realism.
