pesticide use as a management
strategy.
• If the K-9 teams can find out
exactly where bed bugs are
located, they can minimize the
area that needs to be sprayed.
• Dogs can smell at minimum 40-
400 times better than humans
and properly trained can detect
bed bugs through all life cycle
phases from eggs to nymphs to
adults.

complicated by the fact that
the insects can hide almost
anywhere.
• Bed bug detection dogs
solve this problem because
they are small and agile,
finding bugs in places
humans cannot such as
wall voids, crevices and
furniture gaps.

• The smell, described by
some entomologists as
sweet and sickly, is
something dogs can be
trained to sniff out,
much the same way
they can be trained to
detect explosives and
narcotics.

along seams and tufts of furniture, mattresses, drapes, behind headboards, electrical
switch plates, picture frames – all choice locations for a bedbug colony to comfortably
hide undetected
A detection dog locates the bed bug by using their nose. The dog identifies and
hones in on the source of the scent picture. For example, while you are able to
identify the fragrance of a freshly baked apple pie; a dog is able to identify each
ingredient within the pie’s scent picture – eggs, lard, apples, sugar, lemon, butter,
flour, water and cinnamon.
