What is IP address?
 IP stand internet protocol
 An Internet Protocol address (IP address) is a numerical label
assigned to each device connected to a computer network
that uses the Internet Protocol for communication
 Each computer must have an IP address before it can connect
to the internet
 IP is a logical address
4
Structure of IP:
o An IP address:
• IP consist of 4 parts and called Octe, each octe consist of 8 Bit of
bainry.
• is a 32bit long.
• Encodes a network number(network prefix) and (host prefix).
5
6
7
Structure of IP:
o Assingnment:
• Static address
• Dynamic address
Static address : manually input , manageable for small network reuires
careful checks to avoid duplication.
Dynamic address : A sticky dynamic IP address is an informal term
used by cable and DSL Internet access subscribers to describe a
dynamically assigned IP address which seldom changes. The addresses
are usually assigned with DHCP.
Type of IP:
8
 Public: public IP address is the address that is assigned to a
computing device to allow direct access over the Internet. A web
server, email server and any server device directly accessible from
the Internet are candidate for a public IP address.
 Private: this type of IP is available for everyone without need to
buy it from any company.
Version of IP:
9
 Two versions of the Internet Protocol are in
common use in the Internet today:
 IP Version 4
 IP Version 6
IP version 4:
10
 The original internet addressing system is called 'Internet Protocol, Version 4'
(IPV4), and it has numbered the computers of the Internet successfully for
years.
 By employing 32-bits of recombined digits, IPv4 has a maximum of 4.3 billion
possible addresses.
 Include Decimal number.
 An example is 192.168.66.1.
 Every computer, every cell phone, every iPad, every printer, every Playstation,
and even soda machines require an IP address. There are not enough IPv4
addresses for all these devices!
IP version 6:
 IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) is a set of specifications from the Internet
Engineering Task Force that's essentially an upgrade of IP version 4 (IPv4). The
basics of IPv6 are similar to those of IPv4 -- devices can use IPv6 as source and
destination addresses to pass packets over a network, and tools like ping work
for network testing as they do in IPv4, with some slight variations.
 Include Hexadecimal number.
 An example of an IPv6 address is fe80::240:d0ff:fe48:4672.
11
12
Difference IPV4 & IPV6 :
Class of IP:
13
 Include five class:
 A:Class A/ this class used in very big
networks and ISP can work in its range also
let's mention that in this class you can give
16 Million deferent IPs with 3 hosts
 B: Class B/ this class support 65 thousand
hosts, with only 2 nets and 2 hosts.
 C:Class C/ it support 254 hosts with 3 nets
and one host.
 D&E:Class D And E/ these two types are
used in privet networks and they are not for
public users.
Any Question?
