Chapter 5-Reading and Information Literacy
1.) What are some of the ways to become a Critical Internet searcher?
-Search engines (use a favorite such as google, learn about academic directories, Ask
librarians about unique search engines the college subscribes to such as LexusNexus
and InfoTrac,Experiment with conducting the same search on several search engines
and comparing results.
-Use a search strategy (Phrase your search in natural language or keywords,Vary word
order in your search terms,Skim sites to evaluate their relevance and credibility,Copy
and paste the URL into an online notes program.
2.) What effects go beyond your world?
-“Literacy unlocks the door to learning throughout life, is essential to development
and health, and opens the way for democratic participation and active citizenship”
Stated by Kofi Annan, former United Nations Secretary-General. Some countries
believe that literacy is not the importance to the children, but in fact if all children can
pursue a quality education, reach their full potential and contribute to their
community and the world, many countries may not be in poverty.
3.) How can you become a literacy volunteer in your community?
-You can start a reading group to help young students progress their literacy. You can
join organizations that help raise money for kids in low poverty counties to help read.
4.) What can you learn from Gary’s case about SQ3R and being a information literate reader?
-Gary’s case illustrates how understanding a text is essential to making good decisions,
both in and out of the classroom. With SQ3R it helps you as a student study. If you
know the questions you are looking for, reading the table of contents, skimming for
words that stick out, gives you an advantage to knowing where to look since many
people minds to wonder andis not able to focus.
2. 5.) Explain the ways that you would use to conduct an information search.
-At first I would think about everything I know about the subject. After thinking about
it I would search on asearch engine to see if the information is right. I would focus on
the key points of my subject. Paying attention to bold face words, reading summaries
and other emphasized text. Creating tabs or bookmarks on line helps me jump back
and forth of different websites and pages in books so that I can compare and contrast
information. Once I have read several articles I will stop and answer the questions that
I was wrong or unsure about. Immediately and periodically in the days and week
review my information so I can memorize it because practice makes permeate.
