2. ST. TIERNACH’S MONASTIC SETTLEMENT
Clones began as a monastic
settlement c.500 when St.
Tiernach founded his monastery
there and this was one of the
most important sites in
Monaghan for centuries
afterwards.
The tower, high cross and
church all began to this period of
Clones’ history.
3. THE ROUND TOWER AND HIGH CROSS
The Round Tower is 75 feet with square
headed doors and windows.
Nearby is a shrine known as ‘St.
Tiernach’s Shrine’ which is carved out of
stone.
The cross is believed to originate from
the 9th century.
The panels on the front of it show
scenes from scripture.
The panels on the other side show new
testament scenes such as the miracle at
Cana.
4. SARCOPHAGUS- ST. TIERNACH’S GRAVE
The Sarcophagus was constructed in the 8th or 9th
century. Most often, the founder of monasteries was
buried in the monastery in which he died. As Clones
was such, this is likely St. Tiarnach's grave. He is
believed to have died in mid 6th century.
