Why remote?
REMOTE WORK is the ability for you to work and complete your job without needing to be in the office
The office is out of date
Technology allows us to work from anywhere
The benefits are huge
Better focus - deep work with less distractions, no gossip
More time - family/friends/hobbies
need to drop the kids off to school? ok then
gives flexibility
Travel - you can see the world, move out of your parents, live on the beach, live in the city, whatever
Geo-arbitrage - Get paid a KL wage in East Malaysia KL wage for a dev 5000rm+, here 3000
Better for your health (less stress, eat what you want, less sick)
It's been noted that remote employees are healthier than employees in offices
Of course there are some downsides of working remotely
If you work at home alone, loneliness can be real. I'd recommend you try to use a coworking space to keep meeting new people
communications- you need to work extra hard to
Boundaries (separating work and play)
Nomad problems - visas, money, planning
remote work is not for everyone
it depends on the type of person you are or want to be
self motivation
Not for those who can't be trusted
Bad communicators - kind of
youre going to be on your own , so you need to get and share info
So we’ve decided we’re going to do it, we want to be remote! OK now what?
It's hard!
It’s the dream
Companies have a talent pool from the world
you need to stand out
The best way to get a remote job is to have a valuable or specialist skill
Python + Machine Learning + English Speaking
And keep adding skills until roles are obvious to you
Just doing PHP or writing content or doing social media is unlikely to work
be a content writer specialising in cats or fitness or keto
*Suggested sites
Most companies don’t use these
Your local job board - search "remote" - and see what happens
if you want to get experience, look at freelance focused sites, where you can find customers all over the world
these are freelancer
Go direct to a company you love
Create something useful for them - improve a feature on their website
Say you want to work with them remotely
Boss are more likely to hire someone who loves their company
Could be better to convert existing Job to remote
Do you have no meetings, no clients, have outsourced teams already
Learning? If need to learn the better in office
VPN or internal server
Start counting the things you can do in the office and the things you could do anywhere
WIll you be able to convince your boss
he might not trust you (which is terrible as it is)
Things your boss wants to hear:
I'll do better work with less distractions / increased productivity
Less costs to business (office space etc)
employee retention (2x longer)
Get boss to agree for you to work remotely and not in the office
If you can convince them, then there isn't much difference to being at home, or being in another city or country
Better if more than just one person is remote - if the only person its tough
you'll be the only one out of the loop
To help convince your boss and workers,
circulate articles promoting benefits of remote work,
overplay things that remote work could avoid - traffic, wasted meetings, unproductive time
play the sick card and say you'll work from home, then highlight how much more productive you were, how easy it was, how there was no interruption to your job
Keep at it - it could take a while to convince a boss, and it might take extra work early on to make sure a remote experiment doesn't fail - REMOTE WORK is the future
The easiest way to be remote is to work for yourself!
Start your own business, freelance, find your own clients, work with agencies
But it means
You're the boss
It's not for everyone
You might not get EPF payments or government pensions, but your self-earning potential means you can easily out-weight most of these benefits in the long term
i choose to be freelancer
A massive topic I'm not going to cover today but I think the most important aspect of it is to find your market
Focus your skillset and interests until you find your target market keep adding variables until your market is obvious
Then target them - send them cold emails, hang out where they hang out,
So if you've followed these pathways, congrats you are now remote
I've chosen this lifestyle, and people call me a...
Digitial nomad is a term you may have heard, it means someone who travels around while working on their business
Over the last 5 years I've been a nomad and its becoming more and more popularIf you're thinking about this lifestyle, I've got a few tips for you
sell stuff off, don't put stuff in storage, free yourself of burdens
Make sure your travel plans are always 1 trip in advance, so you have onward tickets
Read up on visa requirements for a country, and make sure you meet them
I'm from UK, its cold and wet, so I need to leave the ocuntry to have different stuff
But you are very lucky Malaysia is so big
You can move to Langkawi or Penang or KL or Kuching
where there is a similar cost of living to KK is achievable and where nomads and other freelancers go to:
