Canesten Vaginal Cream (Generic Clotrimazole Vaginal
Cream) is used to treat a fungal infection in the vagina
and vulval area(thrush).
It should be used as an adjunct to treatment of
candidal vaginitis. It can also be used for treatment of
the sexual partner's penis to prevent re-infection.

Canesten Vaginal Cream is manufactured by Bayer
Zydus Pharma, India in the strength of 2% and is available
in a 30 grams tube.

What is a Vaginal Yeast Infection?
A yeast infection is a common type of vaginal infection. Your doctor may
call it candidiasis. This condition is caused by an organism called Candida,
which is a type of yeast. Healthy women usually have this yeast on the
skin, in the mouth, in the digestive tract, and in the vagina.
At times, the yeast can grow very quickly. In fact, the infection is
sometimes called yeast (Candida) “overgrowth.” Some women may have a
yeast infection on the skin outside the vagina (vulva) associated with the
vaginal infection.
A yeast infection can occur at any age. It is most common during the
childbearing years. Women who are pregnant or diabetic, taking
antibiotics, birth control pills or steroids, or who have a weakened
immune system are more likely to get repeated yeast infections.

Chemical Structure

The active ingredient contained in Canesten
Vaginal Cream is Clotrimazole.
Each gram of Canesten Vaginal Cream contains
20 mg of Clotrimazole.

Uses of Canesten 2% Vaginal Cream:
Canesten Vaginal Cream (Generic Clotrimazole
Vaginal Cream) is used to treat vaginal yeast
infections.
Clotrimazole reduces vaginal burning, itching, and
discharge that may occur with this condition. This
medication is an azole antifungal. It works by stopping
the growth of yeast (fungus) that causes the infection.

Recommended Adult Dosage
The dose of Canesten Vaginal Cream (Generic
Clotrimazole Vaginal Cream) is given below:
Canesten Vaginal Cream should be applied thinly two or three
times daily and rubbed in gently.
Treatment should be continued until symptoms of the infection
disappear. However, if after concomitant treatment of the
vaginitis, the symptoms do not improve within seven days, the
patient should consult a doctor.
If the cream is being used for treatment of the sexual partner's
penis it should be applied two or three times daily for up to two
weeks.

Contraindications

Canesten Vaginal Cream is contraindicated in patients with a
known hypersensitivity to Clotrimazole or any component of the
cream.

Storage Instructions
Canesten Vaginal Cream (Generic Clotrimazole Vaginal
Cream) have to be stored at controlled room
temperature i.e. from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F) with
excursions permitted between 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F).
Keep this as well as all other medicines away from
children and pets.

Warnings
Medical advice should be sought if this is the first time the patient has
experienced symptoms of candidal vaginitis.
Before using Canesten Vaginal Cream medical advice must be sought
if any of the following are applicable:
- more than two infections of candidal vaginitis in the last six months
- previous history of a sexually transmitted disease or exposure to
partner with sexually transmitted disease
- pregnancy or suspected pregnancy
- aged under 16 or over 60 years
- known hypersensitivity to imidazoles or other vaginal antifungal
products

Warnings
Canesten Vaginal Cream should not be used if the patient has any of
the following symptoms whereupon medical advice should be sought:
irregular vaginal bleeding, abnormal vaginal bleeding or a blood-
stained discharge, vulval or vaginal ulcers, blisters or sores, lower
abdominal pain or dysuria, any adverse events such as redness,
irritation or swelling associated with the treatment, fever or chills,
nausea or vomiting, diarrhoea or foul smelling vaginal discharge

Warnings
In case symptoms persist for more than 7 days the patient should
be evaluated by a medical practitioner.
Recurrent infections may indicate an underlying medical cause. Patient
should seek medical advice if symptoms return within 2 months.
Treatment during the menstrual period should not be performed.
The treatment should be completed before the onset of menstruation.
Tampons, intravaginal douches, spermicides or other vaginal
preparations should not be used while using Canesten Vaginal Cream .
Avoidance of vaginal intercourse is recommended in case of vaginal
infection and while using Canesten Vaginal Cream.
Canesten Vaginal Cream is intended for use by adults and children 12
years of age and older only.

Possible Side Effects
Large scale clinical studies have shown Canesten Vaginal Cream
(Generic Clotrimazole Vaginal Cream) to be well tolerated after
topical application. The side effects of Canesten Vaginal Cream are
given below:
Immune system disorder: allergic reaction (syncope, hypotension,
dyspnea, urticaria)
Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders: blisters, discomfort / pain,
oedema, erythema, irritation, peeling / exfoliation, pruritus, rash,
stinging / burning

Possible Side Effects
Gastrointestinal disorders: Abdominal pain
If you experience an allergic reaction or the redness, burning, pain,
itching or swelling get worse, stop using this product and tell your
doctor straight away.
Signs of an allergic reaction may include: Rash, Swallowing or
breathing problems, Swelling of your lips, face, throat or tongue,
Weakness, feeling dizzy or faint, Nausea.
After you apply Canesten Vaginal Cream you might experience:
Itching, rash, swelling, redness, discomfort, burning,irritation, vaginal
peeling or bleeding, Pain in the abdomen or pelvic area. In case you
experience any of the above effects, tell your doctor immediately.

Canesten Vaginal Cream Overdosage
Acute overdosage with topical application of Clotrimazole Vaginal
Cream is unlikely and would not be expected to lead to a life-
threatening situation. There is no specific antidote.
In case of accidental ingestion, gastro-intestinal disturbances and
central nervous system depression may occur. Treatment is
symptomatic and supportive.
However, in the event of accidental oral ingestion, routine measures
such as gastric lavage should be performed only if clinical symptoms
of overdose become apparent (e.g. dizziness, nausea or vomiting).
Gastric lavage should be carried out only if the airway can be
protected adequately.

Clotrimazole Vaginal Cream During Pregnancy
Clotrimazole Vaginal Cream (Canesten Vaginal Cream) has been classified by
the US FDA as Pregnancy Category B. Clotrimazole is very poorly absorbed
following dermal application or intravaginal administration to humans.
In clinical trials, use of vaginally applied Clotrimazole in pregnant women in
their second and third trimesters has not been associated with ill effects.
There are, however, no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant
women during the first trimester of pregnancy. As a precautionary measure, it
is preferable to avoid the use of Canesten Vaginal Cream during the first
trimester of pregnancy.
Studies in pregnant rats with intravaginal doses up to 100 mg/kg have
revealed no evidence of harm to the fetus due to Clotrimazole. High oral
doses of Clotrimazole in rats and mice ranging from 50 to 120 mg/kg resulted
in embroyotoxicity, impairment of mating, decreased litter size and number of
viable young and decreased pup survival to weaning.
