The Time Machine

  The Scientific Romance and the
      Evolutionary Paradigm
Character Analysis
• Time Traveler:
                 The Time Machine is comprised
mostly of Time Traveler’s story, as told to Hillyer.
A well-to-do yet socially conscious inventor & a man
of Science who lives in Richmond, he creates a machine that allows
him to travel in the “Fourth Dimension”(Time). He has twinkling gray
eyes and pale face that is usually flushed well educated in the leading
Scientist of his day.
•THE NARRATOR:
                 His name is Mr. Hillyer and he is one of the Time
Traveler's dinner guests.
• THE ELOI:
                 The Eloi are one of the two post-human races
 from this novel. They are the rich, attractive upper class, which
 lives in luxury on the surface of the Earth..
WEENA:
                 She is one of the Eloi. The Time Traveler saves
 her from drowning and they
become friends.
Morlocks:
                 Morlocks are the second
race from this novel, which lives underground.
They tend machinery, and occasionally surface
to eat the Eloi.




Guests:
       A group of half a dozen men, mostly referred to by their
professions, including the Provincial Mayor, the Medical Man and
the Psychologist ,Filby , the Very Young Man, The Editor.
Story
                     CHAPTER ONE
 The Time Machine begins in the Time Traveler's home at a
  dinner gathering attended by many people.
 As the Time Traveler describe how time is fourth
  dimension, his guests argue with him that it can’t be a
  dimension because people can’t move through it as they can
  through space.
 Time Traveler excuses himself & return with a Machine.
 The Time Machine disappears
 All the guests were believing its just a trick
 As well as they couldn’t understand it.
Chapter 2
 The narrator continues explaining skepticism (that is not
  possible) what happened last Thursday when they all were
  gathered..
 Only three of the men from last Thursday’s engagement are
  present, the narrator, the Doctor and the Psychologist..
 The men are assembled, but the Time Traveler himself is
  curiously absent
 As the Psychologist explains to the men who had not seen the
  demonstration the week before, the Time Traveler himself
  enters, pale, dirty and limping.
 The Time Traveler begins, claiming that at four o’clock that
  very day he was in his lab, but since then he had lived eight
  days.
Chapter 3
 The Time Traveler begins his tale, by first explaining how an
  incorrectly sized element of the machine caused a delay of
  almost an entire week.
 He then begins his description of the physical sensation of time
  traveling--how those sensations are unpleasant.
 The Time traveler also tells that how day & nights were being
  passed, as faster that he can only see Sun, Moon & Stars.
 And finally he fall was in a future, don’t know about what
  creature will be here (future).
 He begins to prepare his machine for a return home.
 Then approached by a group of human like creatures, slim and
  small and very frail, and the Time Traveler decides to stay in
  the future.
Chapter 4

 A group of the fragile creatures approach the Time
Traveler.
 The Time Traveler discovers that these small creatures were not so
much advanced in Art, Culture & General Human knowledge
 The group he encounters leads him to a large building, where the
Time Traveler feasts with the people of the future in their fashion
 They eat fruit, and only fruit, though they do have quite a variety of it.
 Time Traveler noticed that these creatures are very much lethargic &
 easily fatigued.
 These creatures have no individual houses, they lived in single
hall, sexes mingling, totally close to each other.
 Drawing conclusions about what has come to be in the year 802701.
Chapter 5
 The Time Traveler discovers that the time machine is not where he
  left it, while returning from river which was River Thames (before)
 He thinks that he had been trapped in future.
 The place where he left the Time machine was sphinx statue with
  bronze base & it is hollow.
 The earlier Small creatures which he now called as Eloi.
 Time Traveler used to investigate more & more about the Elois
  like their Culture, Buildings, Deep Wells (not for water), lacking
  cemeteries or any thing like that…
 That day Time Traveler also save an Eloi girl named as Weena
  from drowning in river.
 That river was at same place were the river Thames is located
 Through Weena he become able to know about their world as
  she becomes his friend.
 The Time Traveler soon has his first true glimpse of the other
  race that inhabits the future.
 White, ape-like creatures hiding in the darkness, named as
  Morlocks
 Morlocks used to eat Elois.
 Morlocks also have captured the Time Machine.
 He then realizes that humankind has split into two different
  species, the fragile creatures of the Upper World (Elois), and the
  apelike creatures of the lower(Morlocks).
Chapter 6
 The Time Traveler becomes more apprehensive and begins
  sleeping in the great hall with the Eloi.
 Going further out than he had before, finding a large building made
  of a kind of green porcelain.
 Much to Weena’s dismay, he tackles his fear.
 Time traveler descend to one of the wells, & finding the way
  through tunnels that were not of his size at all.
 He comes upon a great open space with machinery and a
  carnivorous feast laid. He examines the room as best he can with
  the light of a match.
 Then some Morlocks try to picking his cloths and examining
  him, and he try to flee & escaped as Weena is waiting out at
  surface.
Chapter 7
 The time of the Dark Nights, or of the new moon, is
  approaching, and the Eloi, as well as the Time Traveler, experience
  an increased amount of fear.
 The Time Traveler decides that he needs a weapon of some
  sort, as well as a safe place to sleep.
 He sets off for the green porcelain building, in hopes of fulfilling
  both needs. Weena accompanies him.
 At this point in the story, the Time Traveler pauses, places a
  withered (dried) flower (given by Weena) on the table for his
  listeners to see.
 They had got night on the way, spent night safe & sound and again
  continues their journey to Green Building.
 The Time Traveler becomes convinced that the meat he saw at the
  Morlocks’ feast was indeed the flesh of an Eloi. As they were the
  only source of food for them.
Chapter 8
 The Time Traveler and Weena reach the palace, which they
  discover is actually an old museum falling into ruins.
 They explore the building, finding most of its contents turned to
  dust, or shattered.
 He breaks of a lever of an old machine to use as a weapon, finds a
  perfectly preserved box of matches, as well as a bottle of
  camphor(a white volatile liquid)
 He finds other weapons-guns, hatchets, swords-which he must
  leave behind.
 Time Traveler decides that sleeping next to a fire is their best hope
  for protection.
Chapter 9
 They start back to the large house and the sphinx (a statue where
  he leaves Time machine).
 After seeing three Morlocks near them, he decides to light a small
  fire to keep the Morlocks from following them.
 As they continue into the forest, more Morlocks can be heard
  around them, growing closer and more daring.
 As a result, they camp in their spot for the night, and the Time
  Traveler builds a large fire to protect them.
 He lies down, and falls asleep and wakes up to find that his fire had
  gone out, the Morlocks had taken his matches and Weena.
 He finds his iron mace, and fights off the Morlocks currently
  attacking him, and then finds that the forest is burning.
 He then decides that Weena is lost forever, & feeling the loneliness
  and so he continues on to the Sphinx.
Chapter 10
 The time Traveler reaches the lawn with the sphinx, the very first
  place he step into the future.
 He thinks about his first false impression of the world, and the
  actual world he encountered.
 Tired of recent events & takes a nap.
 By waking up he approaches the sphinx and finds that doors are
  opened.
 He enters and approaches his Time Machine.
 The doors shut, and Morlocks tried to approach him.
 He tried to light a match, but fails, and instead of fighting he
  attaches the lever to machine and again disappears.
Chapter 11
 Because of his rush he was again thousand years in future where
  he see a Giant White Butterfly and Red Monster Crab like
  creature.
 He finds that he is actually further into future.
 The time traveler actually sees the fate of the earth and Sun and
  both these begin to die.
 The air grows cold and he become sick, barely making it onto the
  machine to leave the future.
Chapter 12
 The Time Traveler returns to his own time, ending up in his
  laboratory hours after he first left it.
 Realizes that his machine has moved from one end of his
  laboratory to another, the distance from his machine’s original
  location on the lawn, to the pedestal of the sphinx.
 He ends his tale with an acknowledgement of the fantastic nature of
  it, and asks their opinions of the story.
 He goes to the lab to see if his machine is still there, and the men
  follow. The machine is in the lab, and the men examine it, finding
  it dented and bent, with bits of grass sticking to it.
 Time Traveler is convinced that he did not dream his experiences.
 The next day, the narrator visits the Time Traveler, who assures
  him that he really did travel through time.
 The Time Traveler tells the narrator that if given a half an hour, he
  could prove it, by bringing back things from the future.
 The narrator agrees to wait and soon hears an exclamation and a
  thud.
 He sees an indistinct figure, which then disappears. He goes out to
  wait, and ends his story with the disclosure that he has been waiting
  for three years, and never expects to see the Time Traveler again.
The narrator considers what might have
happened to the Time Traveler and if there is a chance of ever
seeing him again. He suggests that perhaps he went into the
nearer future, into a time in which man’s problems are
solved, but humankind is not on the wane, as it was in the
29th century. The narrator ends on a hopeful
note, noting, that even if in the future, civilization collapses
upon itself, human kindness, as evidenced by Weena’s
flowers, still remains.

The time Machine By Shah Faisal Rashdi

  • 1. The Time Machine By: Herbert George Wells (21st Sept 1866 to 13th Aug 1946) The Scientific Romance and the Evolutionary Paradigm
  • 2. Character Analysis • Time Traveler: The Time Machine is comprised mostly of Time Traveler’s story, as told to Hillyer. A well-to-do yet socially conscious inventor & a man of Science who lives in Richmond, he creates a machine that allows him to travel in the “Fourth Dimension”(Time). He has twinkling gray eyes and pale face that is usually flushed well educated in the leading Scientist of his day. •THE NARRATOR: His name is Mr. Hillyer and he is one of the Time Traveler's dinner guests.
  • 3. • THE ELOI: The Eloi are one of the two post-human races from this novel. They are the rich, attractive upper class, which lives in luxury on the surface of the Earth.. WEENA: She is one of the Eloi. The Time Traveler saves her from drowning and they become friends.
  • 4. Morlocks: Morlocks are the second race from this novel, which lives underground. They tend machinery, and occasionally surface to eat the Eloi. Guests: A group of half a dozen men, mostly referred to by their professions, including the Provincial Mayor, the Medical Man and the Psychologist ,Filby , the Very Young Man, The Editor.

Story CHAPTER ONE  The Time Machine begins in the Time Traveler's home at a dinner gathering attended by many people.  As the Time Traveler describe how time is fourth dimension, his guests argue with him that it can’t be a dimension because people can’t move through it as they can through space.  Time Traveler excuses himself & return with a Machine.  The Time Machine disappears  All the guests were believing its just a trick  As well as they couldn’t understand it.
  • 6. Chapter 2  The narrator continues explaining skepticism (that is not possible) what happened last Thursday when they all were gathered..  Only three of the men from last Thursday’s engagement are present, the narrator, the Doctor and the Psychologist..  The men are assembled, but the Time Traveler himself is curiously absent  As the Psychologist explains to the men who had not seen the demonstration the week before, the Time Traveler himself enters, pale, dirty and limping.  The Time Traveler begins, claiming that at four o’clock that very day he was in his lab, but since then he had lived eight days.
  • 7. Chapter 3  The Time Traveler begins his tale, by first explaining how an incorrectly sized element of the machine caused a delay of almost an entire week.  He then begins his description of the physical sensation of time traveling--how those sensations are unpleasant.  The Time traveler also tells that how day & nights were being passed, as faster that he can only see Sun, Moon & Stars.  And finally he fall was in a future, don’t know about what creature will be here (future).  He begins to prepare his machine for a return home.  Then approached by a group of human like creatures, slim and small and very frail, and the Time Traveler decides to stay in the future.
  • 8. Chapter 4  A group of the fragile creatures approach the Time Traveler.  The Time Traveler discovers that these small creatures were not so much advanced in Art, Culture & General Human knowledge  The group he encounters leads him to a large building, where the Time Traveler feasts with the people of the future in their fashion  They eat fruit, and only fruit, though they do have quite a variety of it.  Time Traveler noticed that these creatures are very much lethargic & easily fatigued.  These creatures have no individual houses, they lived in single hall, sexes mingling, totally close to each other.  Drawing conclusions about what has come to be in the year 802701.
  • 9. Chapter 5  The Time Traveler discovers that the time machine is not where he left it, while returning from river which was River Thames (before)  He thinks that he had been trapped in future.  The place where he left the Time machine was sphinx statue with bronze base & it is hollow.  The earlier Small creatures which he now called as Eloi.  Time Traveler used to investigate more & more about the Elois like their Culture, Buildings, Deep Wells (not for water), lacking cemeteries or any thing like that…  That day Time Traveler also save an Eloi girl named as Weena from drowning in river.  That river was at same place were the river Thames is located
  • 10.  Through Weena he become able to know about their world as she becomes his friend.  The Time Traveler soon has his first true glimpse of the other race that inhabits the future.  White, ape-like creatures hiding in the darkness, named as Morlocks  Morlocks used to eat Elois.  Morlocks also have captured the Time Machine.  He then realizes that humankind has split into two different species, the fragile creatures of the Upper World (Elois), and the apelike creatures of the lower(Morlocks).
  • 11. Chapter 6  The Time Traveler becomes more apprehensive and begins sleeping in the great hall with the Eloi.  Going further out than he had before, finding a large building made of a kind of green porcelain.  Much to Weena’s dismay, he tackles his fear.  Time traveler descend to one of the wells, & finding the way through tunnels that were not of his size at all.  He comes upon a great open space with machinery and a carnivorous feast laid. He examines the room as best he can with the light of a match.  Then some Morlocks try to picking his cloths and examining him, and he try to flee & escaped as Weena is waiting out at surface.
  • 12. Chapter 7  The time of the Dark Nights, or of the new moon, is approaching, and the Eloi, as well as the Time Traveler, experience an increased amount of fear.  The Time Traveler decides that he needs a weapon of some sort, as well as a safe place to sleep.  He sets off for the green porcelain building, in hopes of fulfilling both needs. Weena accompanies him.  At this point in the story, the Time Traveler pauses, places a withered (dried) flower (given by Weena) on the table for his listeners to see.  They had got night on the way, spent night safe & sound and again continues their journey to Green Building.  The Time Traveler becomes convinced that the meat he saw at the Morlocks’ feast was indeed the flesh of an Eloi. As they were the only source of food for them.
  • 13. Chapter 8  The Time Traveler and Weena reach the palace, which they discover is actually an old museum falling into ruins.  They explore the building, finding most of its contents turned to dust, or shattered.  He breaks of a lever of an old machine to use as a weapon, finds a perfectly preserved box of matches, as well as a bottle of camphor(a white volatile liquid)  He finds other weapons-guns, hatchets, swords-which he must leave behind.  Time Traveler decides that sleeping next to a fire is their best hope for protection.
  • 14. Chapter 9  They start back to the large house and the sphinx (a statue where he leaves Time machine).  After seeing three Morlocks near them, he decides to light a small fire to keep the Morlocks from following them.  As they continue into the forest, more Morlocks can be heard around them, growing closer and more daring.  As a result, they camp in their spot for the night, and the Time Traveler builds a large fire to protect them.  He lies down, and falls asleep and wakes up to find that his fire had gone out, the Morlocks had taken his matches and Weena.  He finds his iron mace, and fights off the Morlocks currently attacking him, and then finds that the forest is burning.  He then decides that Weena is lost forever, & feeling the loneliness and so he continues on to the Sphinx.
  • 15. Chapter 10  The time Traveler reaches the lawn with the sphinx, the very first place he step into the future.  He thinks about his first false impression of the world, and the actual world he encountered.  Tired of recent events & takes a nap.  By waking up he approaches the sphinx and finds that doors are opened.  He enters and approaches his Time Machine.  The doors shut, and Morlocks tried to approach him.  He tried to light a match, but fails, and instead of fighting he attaches the lever to machine and again disappears.
  • 16. Chapter 11  Because of his rush he was again thousand years in future where he see a Giant White Butterfly and Red Monster Crab like creature.  He finds that he is actually further into future.  The time traveler actually sees the fate of the earth and Sun and both these begin to die.  The air grows cold and he become sick, barely making it onto the machine to leave the future.
  • 17. Chapter 12  The Time Traveler returns to his own time, ending up in his laboratory hours after he first left it.  Realizes that his machine has moved from one end of his laboratory to another, the distance from his machine’s original location on the lawn, to the pedestal of the sphinx.  He ends his tale with an acknowledgement of the fantastic nature of it, and asks their opinions of the story.  He goes to the lab to see if his machine is still there, and the men follow. The machine is in the lab, and the men examine it, finding it dented and bent, with bits of grass sticking to it.  Time Traveler is convinced that he did not dream his experiences.  The next day, the narrator visits the Time Traveler, who assures him that he really did travel through time.
  • 18.  The Time Traveler tells the narrator that if given a half an hour, he could prove it, by bringing back things from the future.  The narrator agrees to wait and soon hears an exclamation and a thud.  He sees an indistinct figure, which then disappears. He goes out to wait, and ends his story with the disclosure that he has been waiting for three years, and never expects to see the Time Traveler again.
  • 19. The narrator considers what might have happened to the Time Traveler and if there is a chance of ever seeing him again. He suggests that perhaps he went into the nearer future, into a time in which man’s problems are solved, but humankind is not on the wane, as it was in the 29th century. The narrator ends on a hopeful note, noting, that even if in the future, civilization collapses upon itself, human kindness, as evidenced by Weena’s flowers, still remains.
