15. Choosing the correct size Trash Can Liner can:
save money, contribute to source reduction and is easy.
4. Determine the proper resin.
• Will sharp objects be thrown in bag?
IF NO = use High Density (best bang for the money)
measured by Micron thickness
IF YES = use Linear Low measured by Mil thickness
2. Lifting strength is the best way to choose a can liner,
determine the avg. weight of trash in the bag & gauge.
16. 1. Determine the proper bag size, the wrong size will cost money
and it is simply over kill.
Examples:
32 gal. = 33 x 39 correct bag.
If you use a 40 x 46 bag in this container your wasting 43%.
If you use a 38 x 58 bag in this container your wasting 71%.
*******
3 – 4 inches of overhang is ideal
That’s it – you have your bag!
17. Today’s resins allow can liners to be produced at thinner gauges enabling us to
increase the strength and the reliability. Each manufacturer has its own formulations
of blends, which may vary from each other.
General strength terminology for Linear Low Density Liners are sometimes referred as;
• Light .35 - .50 Mil
• Medium .45 - .75 Mil
• Heavy .75 - 1 Mil
• Extra Heavy 1 - 1.5 Mil
• XXX Heavy 1.5 – 2 Mil
In general strength for High Density Liners;
• Light 6 – 9 microns
• Medium 10 – 12 microns
• Heavy 13 – 14 microns
• Extra Heavy 15 – 17 microns
• XXX Heavy 18 – 24 microns
18. Advantages of Linear Low Density Can Liners
• Maximum puncture and stretch resistance compared to High Density
• Multi-purpose applications
• Most prevalent type of film used in the industry today.
• Manufactured in a wide variety of colors.
• Compared to traditional low density film, linear low can be run at a lighter gauge with equal
strength.
Advantages of High Density Can Liners
• HD liners are about 3 times stronger and more durable than ordinary poly liners of
the same thickness.
• HD liners require two-thirds less petroleum based raw material to manufacture.
Accordingly, they can be made about one- third the thickness of ordinary low density
poly liners, so they require only about one- third the ordinary shipping, storage and
warehousing cost.
• Substantial cost savings per liner.
• When they are properly made, HD liners are less likely to "zipper" as much if
punctured.
• Extremely wide range of temperature resistance from -40 degrees F to +212
degrees F (boiling).
• USDA and FDA approved (natural colored liners).
• Excellent gas, moisture and odor barrier.
19. Star Seal is the most common type of seal. It is without gussets,
the star configuration eliminates gaps along the seal where leaks can
occur. This means the bag can conform more easily to the shape of
the container and distributes the weight of the refuse evenly around
the bag. Star Seal liners are designated in two dimensions
(i.e. 38 x 60).
Gusseted Seal are a flat style bag manufactured with both sides
tucked in to form gussets. Where indented, the bag has to be sealed
through four layers of film, while the middle of the bag has only two
layers. Sometimes this style seal leads to an inherently weak bottom
seal. Gusseted seal liners are designated in three dimensions
(i.e. 22 x 16 x 58).
Flat Seal is simply a two-dimensional bag with a bottom seal. Flat
seal bags are generally leak-proof, but are very clumsy to handle.
Also, they do not conform very well to the shape of most trash
receptacles. Flat seal liners are designated in two dimensions
(i.e. 33 x 39).
