TECHNOLOGY TASK FORCE FINDINGS
At the State of the Schools address in October, 2013, Superintendent Dr. John Marschhausen asked the school district to begin a process
to evaluate the school district’s use of technology. In that process, we were to evaluate the devices, technologies, tools, software and sites
that we use for student learning.
The goal of the Technology Task Force is to set a clear vision for where the Hilliard Schools want to be with individual devices
and technology integration in our classrooms.
The Task Force was initially separated into three subgroups - Students, Staff and Community. At the meetings and focus groups, these
three groups came together to have a final Joint Task Force meeting where everyone would share their findings and have some
conversation on the thoughts and ideas that they had in common.
Some other goals of the task force are to address challenges that exist now.
ƒ Our students are fundamentally different from adults.
ƒ Projects involving Technology – hard for classes to get devices long enough to complete larger projects.
ƒ Online text books – Just like music, video, news, photography – print textbooks are beginning to give way to online textbooks and
resources, but every company provides access to online textbooks in different ways making access difficult.
ƒ State and standardized testing is moving online.
ƒ Is there a way to reduce the amount of paper we use?

EXCITING NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR HILLIARD STUDENTS: ACADEMY MD
Many upper classmen aspire to have a career in the medical profession but do not want to leave their high school setting to attend Tolles
Career and Technical Center. A similar experience is coming to them at Hilliard Schools called Academy MD!
In the fall of 2014, Hilliard juniors and seniors can attend classes at the ILC in several areas of interest related to health professions. In
addition, they will earn dual enrollment college credit through Columbus State Community College and potentially earn the following
industry-credentialed certifications: Certified Clinical Medical Assistant; Certified Medical Administrative Assistant; Certified Electronic
Health Records Specialist; Certified Phlebotomist Lab Technician; and Certified EKG Technician. After high school graduation, students
will be prepared for employment as an entry-level medical professional!
The ILC annex and Welcome Center will undergo renovation this spring and summer to make space for two classrooms and a medical
laboratory that mimics a professional setting. Imagine hospital beds, medical monitors, and scrub sinks. In addition, parking will be
expanded. All of the funding is provided through two sources: ODE’s Straight A innovation grant $917,000 and partnership with Tolles
Career and Technical Center.
As a component of the Pathways to Prosperity Network, students in neighboring districts will have the opportunity to attend Academy MD.
Hilliard Schools is partnering with the following districts: South-Western, Upper Arlington, and Grandview Heights.

2014 Ohio Innovative Learning Environments Conference and Induction
The first week of August will be exciting: New Teacher Induction and ILE will be combined! If you have not already done so, please
encourage your staff members to participate in the 2014 ILE Conference August 4th through the 7th. This year’s theme: UNLOCKING
THE POTENTIAL: MOTIVATE – INNOVATE – EDUCATE. The Call for Proposals will be coming out soon. Please provide Tim Hart the
names of those staff members who are doing extraordinary things with students on a day-to-day basis. Excellence is meant to be shared!
Summer Academy 2014
It’s time to start thinking about Summer Academy. Barring any additional calamity days, we are currently scheduled for Monday, June 9th,
through Friday, June 27th. If you and/or your staff members have professional learning needs you would like to see addressed in
Summer Academy offerings, please share your ideas with Tim Hart. If you have facilitators you would recommend, even better! Also, we
are planning to offer Ashland credit for Summer Academy sessions. Details coming soon.
Hilliard Administrative Study Teams (HAST)
Just a reminder that the second HAST window closed on Friday, February 28th. Please submit all sign-in sheets, meeting notes, and the
group reflection to Tim Hart at Central Office soon after the 28th.
If you haven’t already done so, please submit your plan for the third HAST window (March 1 – May 31). Don’t forget, HAST teams don’t
have to remain the same, but they may if you want them to. If you need to order books, please submit your request to Kathy Waples as
soon as possible.
Leadership Academy 2013-2014
Our next Leadership Academy session is scheduled for Thursday, April 17th. Plans are in the making. Stay tuned…
District Grading & Assessment Task Force
The Grading & Assessment Task Force will spend another full day with Ken O’Connor on Friday, March 7th, at Central Office. As these
discussions continue and are shared with your staff members, please encourage them to offer feedback to your building representatives.

Ohio Resident Educator Program
Calamity days not only rock our world, but they can be major stressors for our newer educators. Please keep an eye out for Post Calamity
Stress Disorder in our Resident Educators. Also, if you have concerns about any of your Resident Educators, please let Tim Hart know
right away so that you can engage in some collaborative problem-solving.
Professional Learning Budget Updates
Please be sure to communicate with Kathy Waples if you see any discrepancies on the monthly budget summary forms you are receiving.
Before approving professional leave requests, please make sure that you have necessary funds available if you are the funding source.
Don’t forget, balances show up on the electronic professional leave form.

Please note that just below the “Sub Needed” section, you are now seeing (in red) “Supervisor Only” – Check the box if sub shared
between two positions. This is the only way that the sub cost can be adjusted.
CHANGE in Professional Learning Calendar
The icon for opening the professional learning calendar has changed. It can be found in Google Apps for Education in the upper-right
corner next to your log-in name. It looks similar to a telephone keypad (three rows of three) through The Insider. Make sure you are
viewing the Professional Learning Calendar (under “My Calendars” <-- vertical menu to the left).

SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES - CALAMITY DATES AND TIMELINES
Calamity days do not excuse districts from their obligations to meet federally defined timelines. The federal government requires 100
percent compliance with procedural timelines, and expects that districts will schedule so that there is a bit of leeway for the unexpected.
As the U. S. Department of Education does not permit exceptions based on weather, there is not an EMIS code for non-compliance due to
weather.
PRIOR WRITTEN NOTICE
Effective immediately, IEPs may no longer serve as prior written notice even if the parent agrees with the content of the IEP.
Memorandum 2013-14 notified districts that an agreed upon IEP can no longer serve as prior written notice (PWN) to families. The Ohio
Department of Education Office for Exceptional Children has updated the prior written notice guidance documents. These can be found
on ODE's website.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR GRADE 4 AND 5 TEACHERS
Teachers in Grades 4 and 5 finished their second day of professional development. This professional development was focused on
developing a deeper understanding of the Common Core State Standards in the area of mathematics and literacy. In the area of literacy,
teachers also explored the analysis of running records as a formative assessment to drive instruction. In the area of mathematics, teachers
explored various district resources and evaluated the availability of quality lessons surrounding the topic of fractions.

SUMMER SCHOOL UPDATE
Summer School will be held June 4 to July 10, 2014. Summer School locations will include the Innovative Learning Center, Darby Creek
Elementary, and Darby High School. We will again be providing a number of academic content courses for credit along with the NEXT
(New Experiences, eXtra Time) enrichment classes. The registration packet and additional information will be available to students prior
to spring break.
TWITTER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AT THE ILC
If you have not joined us for the #hcsdchat on Twitter on Tuesday evenings at 8:30 PM, we encourage you to do so. We discuss a theme
topic each night and provide some collaboration among peers. The discussion has sparked some interest in more after school
opportunities and desire for learning more about the ILC philosophy. On March 11th at 3:30 at the Innovative Learning Center we are going
to host a Twitter professional development session, geared specifically toward having a professional chat.
THIRD GRADE READING GUARANTEE (TGRG)
For the 2013-2014 school year, students in 3rd grade must earn a score of 392 to meet the requirements of the Third Grade Reading
Guarantee. If students do not earn this score on the Fall, Spring, or Summer OAA, students are to be retained in 3rd grade. However, the
State is also going to post a list of alternative assessments. If a student earns a passing score on one of these alternative assessments,
the student may advance to 4th grade. This list of alternative assessments is slated to be posted the first week in March!
PRINCIPAL FINAL SUMMATIVE EVALUATION RATINGS
As you know, your OPES observations are finishing up now. The holistic Performance Rating for round #1 and #2 will be completed soon
by Dr. John, Leslie, Tim, and Kim. Please ensure that your evidence pieces are uploaded in your Google folder or physically shared with
your evaluator.
For Student Growth Measure component, Susanne will calculate your vendor-assessment percentages (SRI/SMI). The SGM can only be
completed when your SLO percentage is submitted by you. (If you did not write any SLOs, you will not need to do this piece.) We will
explain this process at the next administrative meeting on Thursday, March 20. In addition, we have extended the original principal SLO
submission date by one week to April 10. We will use eTPES to complete Principal Final Summative Evaluation Rating by the end of
April.
TEACHER: OTES FINAL EVALUATION
During the next administrative meeting on March 20, principals will learn how to use the state’s Electronic Teacher and Principal Evaluation
System (eTPES) to complete teacher evaluation ratings. In addition, we will carve out time for you to work on this task during previously
scheduled meeting times.
