Cattle are the most common type of large domesticated ungulates.
Cattle are raised as livestock for meat, as dairy animals for milk & other
dairy products and as draft animals.
In some countries, such as India, cattle are sacred.

5. KARAN SWISS
The Karan Swiss were developed in India at the National Dairy Research
Institute at Karnal.
The breed was developed using Brown Swiss and Sahiwal.

It is a dual purpose breed with the oxen being well suited for work and
cows giving good quality milk.
High producing females will produce 5000 to 6000kg milk with a 4.78%
butterfat during a lactation.
The breed is usually light grey in color.

8. KARAN FRIES
The Karan Fries were developed in India at the National Dairy Research
Institute at Karnal.
The breed was developed using Holstein (Friesian) and Tharparkar.
10. SUNANDINI
Sunandini is the formal name given to the composite breed of cattle evolved
by crossing the nondescript cattle with exotic donor breeds (Brown Swiss,
Jersey & HF)

The origin of Sunandini breed can be traced back to the import of 22
Brown Swiss bulls & 46 cows during the period from 1965 to 1967 from
Switzerland.
The bulls were mated to a stock of 143 nondescript cows to produce the
crossbreed stock.

Milk fat%- 4.0
13. FRIESWAL
To provide more milk to the people of India a massive crossbreeding
programme has been initiated by the Indian Council of Agricultural
Research, New Delhi, in collaboration with the military farms in India.
Holstein Friesian x Sahiwal combined cattle are targeted to yield >3000 litres
of milk in 300 days with a peak yield of 15 litres in 1st lactation.
15. TAYLOR
The origin of what are known as Taylor breed of cows dates as far back as
1856, when on William Taylor, the commissioner of Patna Division, started
an Industrial Institution by raising funds from the public.
17. CHARACTERISTICS
They are of medium size.
The average female in milk weighing 750lbs & the male 900lbs.
The body is disproportionate, the head being comparatively narrow and
small in comparison to the body.
The look is impressive, the gait light, easy & slow.

The animals are mostly docile in temperament.
Main characteristics is absence of hump and dew lap.
The horns are short thin & directed forward, upward & then inward.
Colour is extremely variable, ranging from grey to various shades including
spots & zebra marks.
