2013 Annual Report
Providence General
Foundation Mission
Providence General Foundation cultivates the charitable
spirit of the community by raising and distributing funds to
promote health and wellness primarily through the programs
and services of Providence Regional Medical Center Everett.
Our fundraising efforts are guided by our core values of
respect, compassion, justice, excellence, and stewardship.

Providence Mission
As people of Providence, we reveal God’s love for all, especially
the poor and vulnerable, through our compassionate service.
Dear Friends,
As we reflect back on 2013, we have much for which we are grateful. Through the uplifting support
that community members, employees, and our many dedicated friends generously extended to the
Foundation, we experienced a very productive year. We are honored by the opportunity to serve this
thriving organization as we work together to cultivate and nurture our growth for many seasons ahead.
Summer 2013 marked the completion of The Campaign for Providence—the largest campaign ever
undertaken in Snohomish County. Throughout the Campaign, a group of more than 70 committed
volunteers devoted countless hours to encourage support of the Marshall and Katherine Cymbaluk
Medical Tower and our mission. Their work—and the Campaign’s impact—will benefit this community
for many decades by planting the seeds now to allow Providence to meet our region’s burgeoning
healthcare needs going forward.
In 2013, more than $2 million of valuable donor contributions were distributed and invested into
Providence and community initiatives focusing on improving health and wellbeing. A highlight of
the year was the investment of $730,000 for a new Center for Autism for the Providence Children’s
Center. An additional $100,000 was awarded to the Inside Out Organ Show—an educational outreach
program that vividly demonstrates the negative impact unhealthy habits can have on our bodies.
Another $270,000 was distributed to the Providence Everett Healthcare Clinic in continued support
of its important work with our underserved population. These are just a few examples of how your
generous support is making a profound positive impact on those we serve.
Other 2013 highlights include record-breaking revenue at both of our signature events—The Epicurean
Affair and Festival of Trees. The annual “I Give” Employee Campaign also had a landmark year, with
an unprecedented $328,000 raised by hospital staff in support of the Foundation and United Way of
Snohomish County.
As one season changed into another, so too there were changes in leadership at Providence in
2013. We bid farewell to Randy Petty who retired from his position as Chief Development Officer after
years of dedicated service and after faithfully shepherding The Campaign for Providence through to
its successful conclusion. Preston Simmons replaced David Brooks as Chief Executive Officer for
Providence Northwest Washington; our new CEO offers experience, a devout sense of mission, and
continuity as we face transformational change in the healthcare world.
As we continue to cultivate hope and healing through our ministry at Providence, we look to coming
seasons with expectation and enthusiasm. We thank you sincerely for your continued support, and
pledge to maximize the impact of every dollar that is entrusted to us. We look forward to connecting
our supporters’ passions to grow our mission in new ways.
Sincerely,

Today, more and more children
are being diagnosed with
autism. Sadly, there are few
places for families to turn
for the help, education and
support that they desperately
need at this time, and it can be
overwhelming and discourag-
ing. But it doesn’t have to be.
Erin Lolohea remembers the
moment she heard her son
Mason’s diagnosis. “It can
be scary, because autism is
often misunderstood.” Erin
says. “But the Providence
Children’s Center’s therapists
helped me to understand that
the diagnosis doesn’t change
your child—you just have a
better understanding of what
they are going through. And
they offered me strategies that
really help.”
The rise of autism in
our community
Christine Tipton, manager of
Children & Family Services
at Providence, says the
Children’s Center is one of just
three Centers of Excellence
in the state approved to diag-
nose autism. Community need
is quickly outpacing availability
of services, and many families
are facing long waiting lists—
up to 18 months—to access
the much needed services.
“Autism incidence has sky-
rocketed in the last ten years,
and the rise in rates in western
Washington is especially high,”
Christie says. “Researchers
are trying to figure out what’s
triggering the change. But
for now, early intervention is
the only way to minimize the
impact on our kids, young
adults, families and greater
community.”
Tending to needs
To help meet the growing
needs for diagnosis and
treatment, Providence will
soon open a new compre-
hensive Center for Autism at
Providence. The groundbreak-
ing program will have three
components: a multi-disci-
plinary team of experts for
diagnosis; a 12-week intensive
treatment program customized
to each child’s needs; and a
training program for parents.
Early intervention is key. “If
autism is identified early, we can
teach coping behaviors that
help a child to communicate
wants and needs, self-soothe
when over-stimulated, and do
well in school,” Christie says.
“Our program identifies a child’s
deficits and strengths; we
develop a plan that focuses on
the strengths. Treatment and
education go far toward helping
these kids and families to be
successful.”
Sowing the seeds
Donor support through fundrais-
ing efforts, including the annual
Festival of Trees, has made it
possible for the Foundation
to invest $730,000 in 2013
towards the new center’s cap-
ital and programmatic needs.
Because of this funding, the
Center for Autism will open its
doors in 2014 with the ex-
panded capacity to serve more
children like Mason.
“Honestly, I don’t know what we
would have done without the
therapists at the Center,” Erin
says. “They are our support,
our team. I can’t imagine how
disheartened we’d have been if
we had been turned away or put
on a waiting list.”

“Until they see it, kids
don’t really understand
the multi-symptom impact
that a habit like smoking
has—on their lungs, brain,
heart and vascular system,”
says Shawneri Guzman,
Trauma and Injury Prevention
Specialist at Providence and
one of the presenters for the
Inside Out program. “But
when they get it, something
clicks. I can see it when they
get the message.”
Helping kids make better
health choices
Shawneri and her colleague
Kathy Ketchum take their
health education mission
on the road with Inside Out:
The Original Organ Show, a
program designed to help
its audience make informed
decisions about behaviors and
lifestyle choices which impact
their long-term wellbeing.
Inside Out presentations
feature actual human organs,
such as hearts, lungs, brains,
livers, kidneys and aortas.
Some of the organs are
healthy; others have been
damaged by substance
abuse, poor eating habits and
unsafe behaviors. Inside Out
shows people first-hand what
really happens to their bodies
when they choose harmful
habits and lifestyles.
Sharing knowledge,
shaping lives
The program reaches ap-
proximately 20,000 people
annually through more than
70 presentations. In 2013,
the Providence General
Foundation funded a two-
year, $100,000 grant for the
Inside Out program to enable
the program to continue
through 2015.
Currently, the program’s
primary outreach focus is local
schools. “It is unfortunate, but
we are finding that a growing
number of students, even
in elementary school, have
already tried unhealthy and
illegal substances,” Shawneri
says. “In many cases, we’re
trying to undo habits that the
kids pick up at home.”
The presentation is also taken
to community health fairs and
events where attendees can
stop by a booth to see the
organs and ask questions.
Keeping it real
Shawneri says she believes
one reason the program tends
to engage the audience so
well is that she and Kathy
“put a person” behind each
organ. “We talk about the true,
harsh consequences of our life
choices. The organs we show
are not fit for conventional
organ donation—because of
the person’s health choices,
their organs are badly dam-
aged. Still, these organs could
potentially save thousands
who learn the lesson before
they make bad decisions.”
Shawneri says the connec-
tion she makes with her
audience—kids especially—is
rewarding. “Some kids cry.
They write us letters. Even
their parents write to thank us
for enlightening their kids,” she
says. “It can be life changing
for many of them.”
NURTURING THE
FUTURE
Shawneri Guzman encourages students at
Marysville Mountain View High School to
examine first-hand the impact unhealthy
choices can have on our organs. Many
documented the unsightly findings with
their cell phone cameras.

On a ship, the word partner
refers to the wooden frame-
work used to strengthen the
deck around the mast—the
powerful spire that holds sails
and moves a ship forward.
This uncommon, yet mean-
ingful, definition of the word
paints the perfect picture of
the value and importance of
partners for the Providence
General Foundation. Without
their strengthening support,
forward progress would
be impossible.
A perfect example of this
type of partner is Premera
Blue Cross, one of the
Pacific Northwest’s largest
health plans.
Stronger together
Premera’s partnership with
the Providence General
Foundation began in 2009
when Premera stepped for-
ward with a $100,000 grant to
the Foundation in support of
a regional cardiac community
education and outreach pro-
gram designed to raise public
awareness on the importance
of calling 911 at the first sign
of a heart attack or stroke.
In addition to the Cardiac
and Stroke Network Grant,
Premera has partnered with
the Foundation over the years
THRIVING
PARTNERSHIPS
by investing significant support
for our annual signature
events—Festival of Trees and
The Epicurean Affair. Since
2010, Premera event spon-
sorship to the Foundation
totals more than $100,000.
Combined with additional
support from grant funding
and other programs, their
total giving to the Foundation
exceeds $217,000 to date.
“Providence and Premera
are like-minded organizations
when it comes to promoting
health and investing in initia-
tives that help build a strong
healthcare system,” said Rich
Maturi, Senior Vice President
of Healthcare Delivery Systems
at Premera. “Our successful
partnership with Providence
allows us to combine our
efforts and strengthen our
impact on the communities
we serve.”
Providence supports
innovation
In 2013, Providence’s
partnership with Premera
continued to blossom through
the work of the Snohomish
County Health Leadership
Coalition. The Coalition was
formed in 2012 when Scott
Forslund, Director of Strategic
Communications for Premera
Blue Cross, invited leaders
from across the county to
meet and discuss ideas for
creating a more sustainable
healthcare system.
Out of that initial work by
the Coalition, two new
initiatives were created, and
the Providence General
Foundation awarded a
$65,000 grant in support of
these efforts.
“The two initiatives are book-
ends in life,” shared Preston
Simmons, Chief Executive
Officer of Providence Regional
Medical Center. “One is
focused on combating youth
obesity, and the other is on
addressing care in the final
stages of life.”
The youth obesity initiative
encourages area students
to be more active and foster
a lifelong commitment to a
healthy lifestyle. Students
receive accelerometers to
track the duration and intensity
of their daily activity. They can
sync their gadgets, log their
progress, and view earned
points and rewards online.
The second initiative focuses
on palliative care, ensuring that
people with life-threatening
illnesses receive care that is in
line with their values.
Rich Maturi and Scott Forslund, Premera Blue Cross
“Multidisciplinary partnerships
like this serve as the catalyst
for true forward progress in
health care,” added Simmons.
“We are grateful that Premera
is a partner who shares that
vision with us.”

John Lundquist, a 75-year-old
Smokey Point resident, toured
the Cymbaluk Medical Tower
before it opened in 2010. “They
opened it up to the community,
and I wanted to see it,” John
says. “I remember walking
through a cardiac operating
room, listening to a doctor who
was talking about the surgeries
they could do. He was holding
a model of the heart.”
“It was fascinating,” John says.
“I honestly thought to myself,
‘if I ever need cardiac care, this
is the place to get it.’”
Fast-forward to 2013, and John
was back, but this time he
didn’t walk in on his own. Even
though John is fit and healthy—
he eats a balanced diet, walks
SOWING THE SEEDS OF
GENEROSITY
every day and lifts weights—
he has a family history of heart
disease. A troubling tightness
in his chest turned out to be
angina, and his next visit to
Providence wasn’t planned.
This time, he was there as a
patient—getting a quadruple
coronary artery bypass.
A spirit of gratitude
John says he believes his
team of Providence caregivers
saved his life, and he’s incredi-
bly thankful. He remembers so
many of the people who cared
for him—Dr. Tim Byrnes,
Dr. Joe Austin, the physician’s
assistant Karen Tooley, his
cardiac nurses, and his anes-
thesiologist. Some names he
can’t recall, but he will never
forget the care and attention
each person provided to make
him feel safe and cared for
while at Providence.
“My gratitude goes out to all
the staff who performed my
open heart surgery,” he says.
“As I was wheeled into surgery
that morning, I was in awe at
the sight of the fantastic light
display and the people stand-
ing at attention at their stations.
I stared around me like a kid at
his first Christmas.”
“It was, and is, humbling to
think of all the attention and
effort given to me on that morn-
ing, and also on the seventh
floor for the next five days,”
John says. “I thank everyone so
much for all of their efforts.”
Inspired to give
John is retired from a long
career, having worked as a
heavy equipment operator
for Scott Paper and later as
a driver for the Forest Service
and Star Rentals. After his
discharge from the hospital
he was inspired to send a
donation, along with a note of
gratitude for his care in honor
of the caregivers who saved
his life.
“I’m not a wealthy man,” John
says. “I’m a pensioner, and I
live on Social Security. But I
really wanted to give something
to recognize how kind and con-
scientious everyone was.”
“So I wrote a letter, and I made
a little offering,” he continued.
“Because, you know, they
treated me like a king.”
John Lundquist reunites with Drs. Timothy
Byrnes and Joseph Austin for the first time
after his week-long recovery at Providence.

2013 SIGNATURE
EVENTS
A Holly Jolly Holiday Festival
The 2013 Festival of Trees was a “Holly Jolly”
holiday success with record-breaking results
for this annual affair. Guided by the leadership
of Joel and Mary French and Joel (Buzz) and
Suzanne French, the event grossed more than
$667,000 in proceeds to benefit the Providence
General Foundation Children’s Services fund in
support of the new Center for Autism.
Throughout the weeklong events—includ-
ing Opening Night, Holiday Gala & Auction,
Community Open House, and Teddy Bear
Breakfast—nearly 5,000 people made their
way through the tinsel and trees at the Everett
Comcast Arena to experience the beautiful
holiday décor. More than 22 wreaths and trees
were elaborately decorated with ornaments of
all shapes and sizes, from sock monkeys and
Disney characters to coveted bottles of Quilceda
Creek wine.
A sincere thank you to the French family, the
many volunteers, tree and wreath designers,
guests, and sponsors who helped make Festival
of Trees so successful. And a special thank you
to our Platinum Sponsors: Premera Blue Cross,
Radia, and K&H Printing; and our Gold spon-
sors: SCI Solutions, Sean Kelly Merrill Lynch
Wealth Management, Tulalip Tribes, The Everett
Clinic, Providence Medical Group, and Western

ous support.
A Seaside Epicurean Affair
With Anthony’s Homeport Restaurant as a
gracious host, more than 200 guests gath-
ered on March 12, 2013, for the 27th Annual
Epicurean Affair. Chaired by Medical Oncologist
Dr. Oliver Batson and his wife Julie, the gourmet
event helped raise more than $126,000 for local
cancer patients enduring financial struggles
while undergoing treatment.
The sold-out crowd enjoyed a special tropical
menu crafted for the night’s festivities. In addition
to the lively auction and fund-a-need, the Everett
Silvertips were presented with the third annual
Budd Gould Award for their outstanding support
of breast cancer screening programs through
the annual Pink the Rink event.
A sincere thank you to Anthony’s Homeport
Restaurant, the Batson’s, event guests, vol-
unteers, and all the generous event sponsors
including The Everett Clinic and Premera Blue
Cross for helping to provide funding for local
cancer patients in need.

The Friends of Providence Donor Society was
established in 2010 to help recognize and thank
Providence General Foundation donors for their
extraordinary support and commitment to con-
tinuing the legacy of quality medical care for our
community. Membership in the society begins
with a minimum of $10,000 in cumulative gifts
to Providence General Foundation and includes
many benefits, including appreciation receptions
and access to the Friends of Providence Donor
Suite on the Colby Campus—a home-like place
of respite for Friends of Providence members in
the event a friend or loved one is hospitalized.
The Society is the Foundation’s way to express
sincere thanks to those donors who have made
an extraordinary investment in the mission and
work of Providence. Listed here are more than
300 couples and individuals who belong to the
Friends of Providence—together, their cumula-
tive support totals approximately $35 million.

PGF 2013 Annual Report for web

  • 2. Providence General Foundation Mission Providence General Foundation cultivates the charitable spirit of the community by raising and distributing funds to promote health and wellness primarily through the programs and services of Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. Our fundraising efforts are guided by our core values of respect, compassion, justice, excellence, and stewardship. Harv Jubie Carolyn Black Providence Mission As people of Providence, we reveal God’s love for all, especially the poor and vulnerable, through our compassionate service.
  • 3. Dear Friends, As we reflect back on 2013, we have much for which we are grateful. Through the uplifting support that community members, employees, and our many dedicated friends generously extended to the Foundation, we experienced a very productive year. We are honored by the opportunity to serve this thriving organization as we work together to cultivate and nurture our growth for many seasons ahead. Summer 2013 marked the completion of The Campaign for Providence—the largest campaign ever undertaken in Snohomish County. Throughout the Campaign, a group of more than 70 committed volunteers devoted countless hours to encourage support of the Marshall and Katherine Cymbaluk Medical Tower and our mission. Their work—and the Campaign’s impact—will benefit this community for many decades by planting the seeds now to allow Providence to meet our region’s burgeoning healthcare needs going forward. In 2013, more than $2 million of valuable donor contributions were distributed and invested into Providence and community initiatives focusing on improving health and wellbeing. A highlight of the year was the investment of $730,000 for a new Center for Autism for the Providence Children’s Center. An additional $100,000 was awarded to the Inside Out Organ Show—an educational outreach program that vividly demonstrates the negative impact unhealthy habits can have on our bodies. Another $270,000 was distributed to the Providence Everett Healthcare Clinic in continued support of its important work with our underserved population. These are just a few examples of how your generous support is making a profound positive impact on those we serve. Other 2013 highlights include record-breaking revenue at both of our signature events—The Epicurean Affair and Festival of Trees. The annual “I Give” Employee Campaign also had a landmark year, with an unprecedented $328,000 raised by hospital staff in support of the Foundation and United Way of Snohomish County. As one season changed into another, so too there were changes in leadership at Providence in 2013. We bid farewell to Randy Petty who retired from his position as Chief Development Officer after years of dedicated service and after faithfully shepherding The Campaign for Providence through to its successful conclusion. Preston Simmons replaced David Brooks as Chief Executive Officer for Providence Northwest Washington; our new CEO offers experience, a devout sense of mission, and continuity as we face transformational change in the healthcare world. As we continue to cultivate hope and healing through our ministry at Providence, we look to coming seasons with expectation and enthusiasm. We thank you sincerely for your continued support, and pledge to maximize the impact of every dollar that is entrusted to us. We look forward to connecting our supporters’ passions to grow our mission in new ways. Sincerely, Harv Jubie Carolyn Black 2013 Chairman, Board of Directors Chief Development Officer Providence General Foundation Providence General Foundation
  • 4. 2 Today, more and more children are being diagnosed with autism. Sadly, there are few places for families to turn for the help, education and support that they desperately need at this time, and it can be overwhelming and discourag- ing. But it doesn’t have to be. Erin Lolohea remembers the moment she heard her son Mason’s diagnosis. “It can be scary, because autism is often misunderstood.” Erin says. “But the Providence Children’s Center’s therapists helped me to understand that the diagnosis doesn’t change your child—you just have a better understanding of what they are going through. And they offered me strategies that really help.” The rise of autism in our community Christine Tipton, manager of Children & Family Services at Providence, says the Children’s Center is one of just three Centers of Excellence in the state approved to diag- nose autism. Community need is quickly outpacing availability of services, and many families are facing long waiting lists— up to 18 months—to access the much needed services. “Autism incidence has sky- rocketed in the last ten years, and the rise in rates in western Washington is especially high,” Christie says. “Researchers are trying to figure out what’s triggering the change. But for now, early intervention is the only way to minimize the impact on our kids, young adults, families and greater community.” Tending to needs To help meet the growing needs for diagnosis and treatment, Providence will soon open a new compre- hensive Center for Autism at Providence. The groundbreak- ing program will have three components: a multi-disci- plinary team of experts for diagnosis; a 12-week intensive treatment program customized to each child’s needs; and a training program for parents. Early intervention is key. “If autism is identified early, we can teach coping behaviors that help a child to communicate wants and needs, self-soothe when over-stimulated, and do well in school,” Christie says. “Our program identifies a child’s deficits and strengths; we develop a plan that focuses on the strengths. Treatment and education go far toward helping these kids and families to be successful.” Sowing the seeds Donor support through fundrais- ing efforts, including the annual Festival of Trees, has made it possible for the Foundation to invest $730,000 in 2013 towards the new center’s cap- ital and programmatic needs. Because of this funding, the Center for Autism will open its doors in 2014 with the ex- panded capacity to serve more children like Mason. “Honestly, I don’t know what we would have done without the therapists at the Center,” Erin says. “They are our support, our team. I can’t imagine how disheartened we’d have been if we had been turned away or put on a waiting list.” GROWING TO SERVE

  • 6. 4 “Until they see it, kids don’t really understand the multi-symptom impact that a habit like smoking has—on their lungs, brain, heart and vascular system,” says Shawneri Guzman, Trauma and Injury Prevention Specialist at Providence and one of the presenters for the Inside Out program. “But when they get it, something clicks. I can see it when they get the message.” Helping kids make better health choices Shawneri and her colleague Kathy Ketchum take their health education mission on the road with Inside Out: The Original Organ Show, a program designed to help its audience make informed decisions about behaviors and lifestyle choices which impact their long-term wellbeing. Inside Out presentations feature actual human organs, such as hearts, lungs, brains, livers, kidneys and aortas. Some of the organs are healthy; others have been damaged by substance abuse, poor eating habits and unsafe behaviors. Inside Out shows people first-hand what really happens to their bodies when they choose harmful habits and lifestyles. Sharing knowledge, shaping lives The program reaches ap- proximately 20,000 people annually through more than 70 presentations. In 2013, the Providence General Foundation funded a two- year, $100,000 grant for the Inside Out program to enable the program to continue through 2015. Currently, the program’s primary outreach focus is local schools. “It is unfortunate, but we are finding that a growing number of students, even in elementary school, have already tried unhealthy and illegal substances,” Shawneri says. “In many cases, we’re trying to undo habits that the kids pick up at home.” The presentation is also taken to community health fairs and events where attendees can stop by a booth to see the organs and ask questions. Keeping it real Shawneri says she believes one reason the program tends to engage the audience so well is that she and Kathy “put a person” behind each organ. “We talk about the true, harsh consequences of our life choices. The organs we show are not fit for conventional organ donation—because of the person’s health choices, their organs are badly dam- aged. Still, these organs could potentially save thousands who learn the lesson before they make bad decisions.” Shawneri says the connec- tion she makes with her audience—kids especially—is rewarding. “Some kids cry. They write us letters. Even their parents write to thank us for enlightening their kids,” she says. “It can be life changing for many of them.” NURTURING THE FUTURE
  • 7. Shawneri Guzman encourages students at Marysville Mountain View High School to examine first-hand the impact unhealthy choices can have on our organs. Many documented the unsightly findings with their cell phone cameras.
  • 8. 6 On a ship, the word partner refers to the wooden frame- work used to strengthen the deck around the mast—the powerful spire that holds sails and moves a ship forward. This uncommon, yet mean- ingful, definition of the word paints the perfect picture of the value and importance of partners for the Providence General Foundation. Without their strengthening support, forward progress would be impossible. A perfect example of this type of partner is Premera Blue Cross, one of the Pacific Northwest’s largest health plans. Stronger together Premera’s partnership with the Providence General Foundation began in 2009 when Premera stepped for- ward with a $100,000 grant to the Foundation in support of a regional cardiac community education and outreach pro- gram designed to raise public awareness on the importance of calling 911 at the first sign of a heart attack or stroke. In addition to the Cardiac and Stroke Network Grant, Premera has partnered with the Foundation over the years THRIVING PARTNERSHIPS by investing significant support for our annual signature events—Festival of Trees and The Epicurean Affair. Since 2010, Premera event spon- sorship to the Foundation totals more than $100,000. Combined with additional support from grant funding and other programs, their total giving to the Foundation exceeds $217,000 to date. “Providence and Premera are like-minded organizations when it comes to promoting health and investing in initia- tives that help build a strong healthcare system,” said Rich Maturi, Senior Vice President of Healthcare Delivery Systems at Premera. “Our successful partnership with Providence allows us to combine our efforts and strengthen our impact on the communities we serve.” Providence supports innovation In 2013, Providence’s partnership with Premera continued to blossom through the work of the Snohomish County Health Leadership Coalition. The Coalition was formed in 2012 when Scott Forslund, Director of Strategic Communications for Premera Blue Cross, invited leaders from across the county to meet and discuss ideas for creating a more sustainable healthcare system. Out of that initial work by the Coalition, two new initiatives were created, and the Providence General Foundation awarded a $65,000 grant in support of these efforts. “The two initiatives are book- ends in life,” shared Preston Simmons, Chief Executive Officer of Providence Regional Medical Center. “One is focused on combating youth obesity, and the other is on addressing care in the final stages of life.” The youth obesity initiative encourages area students to be more active and foster a lifelong commitment to a healthy lifestyle. Students receive accelerometers to track the duration and intensity of their daily activity. They can sync their gadgets, log their progress, and view earned points and rewards online. The second initiative focuses on palliative care, ensuring that people with life-threatening illnesses receive care that is in line with their values.
  • 9. Rich Maturi and Scott Forslund, Premera Blue Cross “Multidisciplinary partnerships like this serve as the catalyst for true forward progress in health care,” added Simmons. “We are grateful that Premera is a partner who shares that vision with us.”
  • 10. 8 John Lundquist, a 75-year-old Smokey Point resident, toured the Cymbaluk Medical Tower before it opened in 2010. “They opened it up to the community, and I wanted to see it,” John says. “I remember walking through a cardiac operating room, listening to a doctor who was talking about the surgeries they could do. He was holding a model of the heart.” “It was fascinating,” John says. “I honestly thought to myself, ‘if I ever need cardiac care, this is the place to get it.’” Fast-forward to 2013, and John was back, but this time he didn’t walk in on his own. Even though John is fit and healthy— he eats a balanced diet, walks SOWING THE SEEDS OF GENEROSITY every day and lifts weights— he has a family history of heart disease. A troubling tightness in his chest turned out to be angina, and his next visit to Providence wasn’t planned. This time, he was there as a patient—getting a quadruple coronary artery bypass. A spirit of gratitude John says he believes his team of Providence caregivers saved his life, and he’s incredi- bly thankful. He remembers so many of the people who cared for him—Dr. Tim Byrnes, Dr. Joe Austin, the physician’s assistant Karen Tooley, his cardiac nurses, and his anes- thesiologist. Some names he can’t recall, but he will never forget the care and attention each person provided to make him feel safe and cared for while at Providence. “My gratitude goes out to all the staff who performed my open heart surgery,” he says. “As I was wheeled into surgery that morning, I was in awe at the sight of the fantastic light display and the people stand- ing at attention at their stations. I stared around me like a kid at his first Christmas.” “It was, and is, humbling to think of all the attention and effort given to me on that morn- ing, and also on the seventh floor for the next five days,” John says. “I thank everyone so much for all of their efforts.” Inspired to give John is retired from a long career, having worked as a heavy equipment operator for Scott Paper and later as a driver for the Forest Service and Star Rentals. After his discharge from the hospital he was inspired to send a donation, along with a note of gratitude for his care in honor of the caregivers who saved his life. “I’m not a wealthy man,” John says. “I’m a pensioner, and I live on Social Security. But I really wanted to give something to recognize how kind and con- scientious everyone was.” “So I wrote a letter, and I made a little offering,” he continued. “Because, you know, they treated me like a king.”
  • 11. John Lundquist reunites with Drs. Timothy Byrnes and Joseph Austin for the first time after his week-long recovery at Providence.
  • 12. 10 2013 SIGNATURE EVENTS A Holly Jolly Holiday Festival The 2013 Festival of Trees was a “Holly Jolly” holiday success with record-breaking results for this annual affair. Guided by the leadership of Joel and Mary French and Joel (Buzz) and Suzanne French, the event grossed more than $667,000 in proceeds to benefit the Providence General Foundation Children’s Services fund in support of the new Center for Autism. Throughout the weeklong events—includ- ing Opening Night, Holiday Gala & Auction, Community Open House, and Teddy Bear Breakfast—nearly 5,000 people made their way through the tinsel and trees at the Everett Comcast Arena to experience the beautiful holiday décor. More than 22 wreaths and trees were elaborately decorated with ornaments of all shapes and sizes, from sock monkeys and Disney characters to coveted bottles of Quilceda Creek wine. A sincere thank you to the French family, the many volunteers, tree and wreath designers, guests, and sponsors who helped make Festival of Trees so successful. And a special thank you to our Platinum Sponsors: Premera Blue Cross, Radia, and K&H Printing; and our Gold spon- sors: SCI Solutions, Sean Kelly Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, Tulalip Tribes, The Everett Clinic, Providence Medical Group, and Western Washington Medical Group for their very gener- ous support. A Seaside Epicurean Affair With Anthony’s Homeport Restaurant as a gracious host, more than 200 guests gath- ered on March 12, 2013, for the 27th Annual Epicurean Affair. Chaired by Medical Oncologist Dr. Oliver Batson and his wife Julie, the gourmet event helped raise more than $126,000 for local cancer patients enduring financial struggles while undergoing treatment. The sold-out crowd enjoyed a special tropical menu crafted for the night’s festivities. In addition to the lively auction and fund-a-need, the Everett Silvertips were presented with the third annual Budd Gould Award for their outstanding support of breast cancer screening programs through the annual Pink the Rink event. A sincere thank you to Anthony’s Homeport Restaurant, the Batson’s, event guests, vol- unteers, and all the generous event sponsors including The Everett Clinic and Premera Blue Cross for helping to provide funding for local cancer patients in need.

Membership in the society begins with a minimum of $10,000 in cumulative gifts to Providence General Foundation and includes many benefits, including appreciation receptions and access to the Friends of Providence Donor Suite on the Colby Campus—a home-like place of respite for Friends of Providence members in the event a friend or loved one is hospitalized. The Society is the Foundation’s way to express sincere thanks to those donors who have made an extraordinary investment in the mission and work of Providence. Listed here are more than 300 couples and individuals who belong to the Friends of Providence—together, their cumula- tive support totals approximately $35 million. FRIENDS OF PROVIDENCEDONOR SOCIETY
