Carnival is a festival of ancient origins, a little
religious and pagan at the same time, it starts at
Epiphany until Ash Wednesday.
The modern carnival, has lost its original meaning
was the religious one, and has assumed that of a
folk festival, which is kept alive and cultivated for
not losing the old traditions. For this, in our
country, the Carnival has taken today a significant
impact in those cities which, already in the past,
had great traditions, such as Viareggio in
Tuscany and Venice in the Veneto region.

In Venice, all the city is transformed at carnival time and the
old masks around on the “calli” and “gondole”, bring the
observer on a magic journey back in the time.

The Carnival citadel of Viareggio is the biggest and most
important centre dedicated to the masks.
Here you can find the builders labs, the hangars where are
made the huge floats, two museums, a historic
documentary centre.
These buildings overlook a big square ,that in summer is
used to put on great shows.

Carnival is a funny and festive
procession: you can dress up and
decide to wear the fancy dress you
want to, but long time ago the typical
masks were those belonging to the
characters of the “commdia dell’ arte”
and slapstick comedy such as
Harlequin , Columbine , Punch
(Pulcinella) and many others.

stage.
