Internship Commitment
 Commitment is for at least one year, and may
be renewed upon mutual agreement of site and
intern
◦ Undergraduate interns may also choose to continue
with their site as a graduate intern if mutually
agreeable.
 Most interns will stay at the same site until they
graduate
◦ May request a relocation after one year, but this rarely
happens because it would require another site hiring
an intern
Academic Mentoring & Accountability
Responsibilities
 For undergrad work student and MBA interns, Each site
must appoint a staff (often their supervisor) to serve as
the intern’s academic mentor
◦ Will be given City Vision login and will receive email notifications
 Academic Mentor Responsibilities
◦ Ensure that intern is turning in assignments on time (treat not
completing homework like not completing work)
◦ Discuss what they are learning in their courses and when possible
try to find opportunities for them to gain related practical
experience
◦ Encourage intern in their academic progress
◦ Talk to intern about late homework notifications, and login to City
Vision system to monitor student progress if needed
◦ Discipline and dismissal if not taking academics seriously
Late Assignment Email Notification
Proctor Requirements
 A staff person at your ministry should apply to be a
proctor for your exams
◦ http://www.cityvision.edu/proctor-apply
◦ Often this is your Academic Mentor
◦ Proctor will then be given a password to access exams
 Proctor must be available when you take midterms and
final exams
◦ Will grant you access to online test
◦ Ensure that exam policies are followed (exams are closed book)
◦ Checks government issued ID
◦ Proctor submits the exam once student is done
Ensuring Financial Sustainability
 Many interns will qualify for food stamps
◦ Find link to apply at:
www.fns.usda.gov/snap/applicant_recipients/apply.htm
 Can fundraise as an urban Missionary from your church or using an
online fundraising tool for causes like FirstGiving.org to process your
donations.
 If you are a student be sure to apply for financial aid (Pell undergrad,
Loans Grad)
◦ Financial aid will be paid to intern as cash as we receive them
◦ Undergraduate interns cannot get the intern discount and take student
loans
 Housing stipend paid directly to landlord is not taxable
 You cannot take a second job.
 If health insurance is needed, see if you qualify for Medicaid or
state-sponsored health insurance for low-income individuals.
Communication with TechMission
 Your site supervisor is your supervisor, not
TechMission
◦ TechMission will avoid getting in the middle of conflict
 Exceptions
◦ Sites that work student interns more than the required
hours impairing their studies
◦ Sites that violate the law or terms of the internship
contract
◦ Sites that do not pay their fees to TechMission/City
Vision
◦ Sites with programs that end due to financial reasons
or that provide no supervision
Site Payments
 Site pays City Vision College $700 (or $1,000
for MBA interns) once an intern is placed on
site.
 Site continues to pay at $700 (or $1,000 for
graduate interns) 5 times increments on for a
total of $3,500/year (or $5,000/year for graduate
interns).
 If an intern does not complete the full year, then
the site only pays the fee up to the time intern
left.
 Site fee is the same regardless of the number of
courses an intern takes if any
Payment Due Dates
 Work Study Undergrad and Graduate Fellow Interns
◦ August 15
◦ October 15
◦ January 15
◦ March 15
◦ May 15
 Payment is for the intern not for tuition regardless of whether interns take
courses
 For, paid Interns, sites pay $1,000 on the first day and an additional
$1,000 after 3 months of service.
 Summer interns are for $300 for the first day of service
Intern Policies
 Work Study undergrad interns work structure
◦ 29 hours as an intern
◦ 16 hours for on site study and lunch breaks (sites may wave on-
site requirement for graduate interns)
◦ 45 hours of total time per week (9 hour days)
 Graduate Interns: 35 hours/week
 Paid Interns: 40 hours/week
 Interns follow sites sick, vacation & holiday policy
◦ If no policy exists, then we recommend that interns get 15
combined sick/vacation days
 Interns follow site policies unless those policies violate
the law or internship contract
Things to discuss with your supervisor
 Find out who is your supervisor / go-to person.
 If possible establish a regular schedule for serving
 Find out what is expected of you – talk about your job
description.
 Establish who you should go to for help.
 Ask what you should do if you’ll be late.
 Make sure to trade contact information.
 Ask about rules – especially those involving how to
interact with other staff and those you’re serving.
 Ask what makes a good intern.
A Good Intern is F.A.T.
 Faithful: Keep your commitments.
◦ Don’t think of yourself as “just” a volunteer. People are depending
on you!
◦ If you need to miss a session or will be late, call.
 Available
◦ Willing to do whatever is needed
◦ Expect to sacrifice
 Teachable
◦ Ask what people (staff, clients, the community) need instead of
assuming that you know
◦ Ask how you can be helpful instead of assuming you know
◦ Be flexible
Outcome Requirements
 We will provide a web form for interns to
complete every 6 months
◦ Estimates are fine as our intent is to minimize the
work on your end (1-2 hours) to compile outcomes
◦ Required for continuation in program
 In the program(s) your intern(s) is/are involved
in
◦ Number of program participants
◦ Number of volunteers
◦ End Outcome Estimates: grade promotion, graduation
rate, program completion rate, etc.

  • 11. Academic Mentoring & Accountability Responsibilities  For undergrad work student and MBA interns, Each site must appoint a staff (often their supervisor) to serve as the intern’s academic mentor ◦ Will be given City Vision login and will receive email notifications  Academic Mentor Responsibilities ◦ Ensure that intern is turning in assignments on time (treat not completing homework like not completing work) ◦ Discuss what they are learning in their courses and when possible try to find opportunities for them to gain related practical experience ◦ Encourage intern in their academic progress ◦ Talk to intern about late homework notifications, and login to City Vision system to monitor student progress if needed ◦ Discipline and dismissal if not taking academics seriously
  • 12. Late Assignment Email Notification

  • 14. Ensuring Financial Sustainability  Many interns will qualify for food stamps ◦ Find link to apply at: www.fns.usda.gov/snap/applicant_recipients/apply.htm  Can fundraise as an urban Missionary from your church or using an online fundraising tool for causes like FirstGiving.org to process your donations.  If you are a student be sure to apply for financial aid (Pell undergrad, Loans Grad) ◦ Financial aid will be paid to intern as cash as we receive them ◦ Undergraduate interns cannot get the intern discount and take student loans  Housing stipend paid directly to landlord is not taxable  You cannot take a second job.  If health insurance is needed, see if you qualify for Medicaid or state-sponsored health insurance for low-income individuals.
  • 15. Communication with TechMission  Your site supervisor is your supervisor, not TechMission ◦ TechMission will avoid getting in the middle of conflict  Exceptions ◦ Sites that work student interns more than the required hours impairing their studies ◦ Sites that violate the law or terms of the internship contract ◦ Sites that do not pay their fees to TechMission/City Vision ◦ Sites with programs that end due to financial reasons or that provide no supervision
  • 16. Site Payments  Site pays City Vision College $700 (or $1,000 for MBA interns) once an intern is placed on site.  Site continues to pay at $700 (or $1,000 for graduate interns) 5 times increments on for a total of $3,500/year (or $5,000/year for graduate interns).  If an intern does not complete the full year, then the site only pays the fee up to the time intern left.  Site fee is the same regardless of the number of courses an intern takes if any
  • 17. Payment Due Dates  Work Study Undergrad and Graduate Fellow Interns ◦ August 15 ◦ October 15 ◦ January 15 ◦ March 15 ◦ May 15  Payment is for the intern not for tuition regardless of whether interns take courses  For, paid Interns, sites pay $1,000 on the first day and an additional $1,000 after 3 months of service.  Summer interns are for $300 for the first day of service
  • 18. Intern Policies  Work Study undergrad interns work structure ◦ 29 hours as an intern ◦ 16 hours for on site study and lunch breaks (sites may wave on- site requirement for graduate interns) ◦ 45 hours of total time per week (9 hour days)  Graduate Interns: 35 hours/week  Paid Interns: 40 hours/week  Interns follow sites sick, vacation & holiday policy ◦ If no policy exists, then we recommend that interns get 15 combined sick/vacation days  Interns follow site policies unless those policies violate the law or internship contract
  • 19. Things to discuss with your supervisor  Find out who is your supervisor / go-to person.  If possible establish a regular schedule for serving  Find out what is expected of you – talk about your job description.  Establish who you should go to for help.  Ask what you should do if you’ll be late.  Make sure to trade contact information.  Ask about rules – especially those involving how to interact with other staff and those you’re serving.  Ask what makes a good intern.
  • 20. A Good Intern is F.A.T.  Faithful: Keep your commitments. ◦ Don’t think of yourself as “just” a volunteer. People are depending on you! ◦ If you need to miss a session or will be late, call.  Available ◦ Willing to do whatever is needed ◦ Expect to sacrifice  Teachable ◦ Ask what people (staff, clients, the community) need instead of assuming that you know ◦ Ask how you can be helpful instead of assuming you know ◦ Be flexible
  • 21. Outcome Requirements  We will provide a web form for interns to complete every 6 months ◦ Estimates are fine as our intent is to minimize the work on your end (1-2 hours) to compile outcomes ◦ Required for continuation in program  In the program(s) your intern(s) is/are involved in ◦ Number of program participants ◦ Number of volunteers ◦ End Outcome Estimates: grade promotion, graduation rate, program completion rate, etc.
