Service Learning
Day One After morning calendar we had snack and bathroom break. Next it was time for centers of learning and I had an opportunity to get to know some of the students Next was playground time After playground was time for math. My first day was 9/17/2010 from 8:30 am until 11:30am. The day started with morning calendar and the teacher telling the students about the magic box.  The magic box was the stand for the lap top for the smart board that the class was going to use for the first time that day.
For morning math the teacher had a surprise for them, they were able to use the magic board. The students had a little difficulty getting the shapes to do what they wanted them to do.  Some were a little too heavy handed and needed to be taught how to treat the smart board. Other than that there were no difficulties and the students loved it. The students were engaged in learning the whole time they were using it. We spent a lot of time on math that day and ran out of time for a story and then it was time for lunch.
Day Two My second day was on 9/24/2010 from 8:30am until 11:30am. We began our day with morning calendar and used the smart board.  The students are becoming more used to it and had little difficulty with sliding their names from the absent to the present side of the board.
After morning calendar the students went to the kitchen for snack and to use the restroom. Next we went to the playground. The schedule was a little off because today was Apple Orchard Day. The students were going to go to the kitchen and help make apple juice, apple sauce, apple print pictures and sample different types of apples.
After the playground we went back to the kitchen  and had apple orchard day.  The students chose which type of apple they liked best and one of the moms made a poster showing their choices. Next we went back to the classroom for centers After cleaning up from centers we had a story and it was time for lunch. Right before lunch the kids had a wonderful surprise, Ronald McDonald showed up to visit.
Day Three My third day was on 10/1/2010 from 8:30 until 11:30am.  We started out by using the smart board for morning calendar. The students have gotten into a routine and have no difficulties with using it.  It is used for attendance, the days of the week and talking about the weather.  Next we had centers of learning and then snack. Then we did playground, and then came in for math. The students worked on squares and counting.  I sat at one table with a small group of students.  After snack the teacher used the smart board to find the students an online story to watch and listen to.  They were much more attentive to that than listening to a book.
After the story it was time to go to lunch. The teacher had me make some pics for a student with Down Syndrome. Some of the pics showed specific things that the student liked to do. The student has had to adjust to using them but is working with a therapist at the school and his parents.

Day 4 My fourth day was on 10/22/2010 from 8:30 until 11:30am.  We started the day with morning calendar but could not use smart board because the computer kept saying offline. After morning calendar we had snack and then centers.
After centers we went to the playground and then went back to the classroom for math. Today we worked on coloring rectangles yellow and counting them. After math we had a story and then went to lunch. This picture shows where the students pics are kept. The little boy had another student who worked with him using the pics and he is starting to get used to using them.
Day five My last day was on 11/5/2010 from 8:30am until 11:30am.  We began our day by using the smart board for both morning calendar and to review the letter A. The students were very engaged while using the smart board and had no difficulty using it. Next we had snack and used the restroom.
Then it was time for centers and then playground time. Today when we came in we had a special treat, we cut up pumpkins and scooped out the seeds. The seeds were laid out to dry over the weekend to dry so that they could be put into a book the next week.
We were so busy with the pumpkins that we ran out of time for math, but did have a story. After the story it was time to go to lunch and for me to go home. The teacher who took over the class after the original teacher left.

  • 3. For morning math the teacher had a surprise for them, they were able to use the magic board. The students had a little difficulty getting the shapes to do what they wanted them to do. Some were a little too heavy handed and needed to be taught how to treat the smart board. Other than that there were no difficulties and the students loved it. The students were engaged in learning the whole time they were using it. We spent a lot of time on math that day and ran out of time for a story and then it was time for lunch.
  • 4. Day Two My second day was on 9/24/2010 from 8:30am until 11:30am. We began our day with morning calendar and used the smart board. The students are becoming more used to it and had little difficulty with sliding their names from the absent to the present side of the board.
  • 5. After morning calendar the students went to the kitchen for snack and to use the restroom. Next we went to the playground. The schedule was a little off because today was Apple Orchard Day. The students were going to go to the kitchen and help make apple juice, apple sauce, apple print pictures and sample different types of apples.
  • 6. After the playground we went back to the kitchen and had apple orchard day. The students chose which type of apple they liked best and one of the moms made a poster showing their choices. Next we went back to the classroom for centers After cleaning up from centers we had a story and it was time for lunch. Right before lunch the kids had a wonderful surprise, Ronald McDonald showed up to visit.
  • 7. Day Three My third day was on 10/1/2010 from 8:30 until 11:30am. We started out by using the smart board for morning calendar. The students have gotten into a routine and have no difficulties with using it. It is used for attendance, the days of the week and talking about the weather. Next we had centers of learning and then snack. Then we did playground, and then came in for math. The students worked on squares and counting. I sat at one table with a small group of students. After snack the teacher used the smart board to find the students an online story to watch and listen to. They were much more attentive to that than listening to a book.
  • 8. After the story it was time to go to lunch. The teacher had me make some pics for a student with Down Syndrome. Some of the pics showed specific things that the student liked to do. The student has had to adjust to using them but is working with a therapist at the school and his parents.

  • 10. Day 4 My fourth day was on 10/22/2010 from 8:30 until 11:30am. We started the day with morning calendar but could not use smart board because the computer kept saying offline. After morning calendar we had snack and then centers.
  • 11. After centers we went to the playground and then went back to the classroom for math. Today we worked on coloring rectangles yellow and counting them. After math we had a story and then went to lunch. This picture shows where the students pics are kept. The little boy had another student who worked with him using the pics and he is starting to get used to using them.
  • 12. Day five My last day was on 11/5/2010 from 8:30am until 11:30am. We began our day by using the smart board for both morning calendar and to review the letter A. The students were very engaged while using the smart board and had no difficulty using it. Next we had snack and used the restroom.
  • 13. Then it was time for centers and then playground time. Today when we came in we had a special treat, we cut up pumpkins and scooped out the seeds. The seeds were laid out to dry over the weekend to dry so that they could be put into a book the next week.
  • 14. We were so busy with the pumpkins that we ran out of time for math, but did have a story. After the story it was time to go to lunch and for me to go home. The teacher who took over the class after the original teacher left.
