• Pollution is now a common place term, that our ears
are attuned to. We hear about the various forms
of pollution and read about it through the mass
media.
• Air pollution is one such form that refers to the
contamination of the air, irrespective of indoors or
outside.
• A physical, biological or chemical alteration to the
air in the atmosphere can be termed as pollution.
• It occurs when any harmful gases, dust, smoke
enters into the atmosphere and makes it difficult
for plants, animals and humans to survive as the
air becomes dirty.
• Air pollution can further be classified into two
sections-
Visible air pollution
Invisible air pollution
• Another way of looking at Air pollution could be
any substance that holds the potential to hinder
the atmosphere or the well being of the living
beings surviving in it.
• The sustainment of all things living is due to a
combination of gases that collectively form the
atmosphere; the imbalance caused by the increase
or decrease of the percentage of these gases can
be harmful for survival.
• The Ozone layer considered crucial for
the existence of the ecosystems on the
planet is depleting due to increased
pollution.
• Global warming, a direct result of the
increased imbalance of gases in the
atmosphere has come to be known as
the biggest threat and challenge that the
contemporary world has to overcome in
a bid for survival.
Types of Pollutants
• In order to understand the causes of Air pollution,
several divisions can be made.
• Primarily air pollutants can be caused by primary sources
or secondary sources. The pollutants that are a direct
result of the process can be called primary
pollutants. A classic example of a primary pollutant
would be the sulfur-dioxide emitted from factories.
• Secondary pollutants are the ones that are caused by the
inter mingling and reactions of primary pollutants.
Smog created by the interactions of several primary
pollutants is known to be as secondary pollutant.
• Sulphur oxides (SOx) - particularly sulfur dioxide, a
chemical compound with the formula SO2.
• SO2 is produced by volcanoes and in various industrial
processes.
• Coal and petroleum often contain sulfur compounds,
and their combustion generates sulfur dioxide.
• Further oxidation of SO2, usually in the presence of a
catalyst such as NO2, forms H2SO4, and thus acid rain.
• This is one of the causes for concern over the
environmental impact of the use of these fuels as
power sources.
Primary Pollutants
Major primary pollutants produced by human
activity
 Nitrogen oxides (NOx)
• Nitrogen oxides, particularly nitrogen dioxide, are expelled
from high temperature combustion, and are also produced
during thunderstorms by electric discharge.
• They can be seen as a brown haze dome above or a plume
downwind of cities.
• Nitrogen dioxide is a chemical compound with the formula
NO2.
• It is one of several nitrogen oxides.
• One of the most prominent air pollutants, this reddish-
brown toxic gas has a characteristic sharp, biting odor.
 Carbon monoxide (CO)
• CO is a colourless, odourless, toxic yet non-irritating gas.
• It is a product by incomplete combustion of fuel such as
natural gas, coal or wood.
• Vehicular exhaust is a major source of carbon monoxide.
 Volatile organic compounds
• VOCs are a well-known outdoor air pollutant.
• They are categorized as either methane (CH4) or non-methane
(NMVOCs).
• Methane is an extremely efficient greenhouse gas which
contributes to enhanced global warming.
• Other hydrocarbon VOCs are also significant greenhouse gases
because of their role in creating ozone and prolonging the life of
methane in the atmosphere.
• This effect varies depending on local air quality.
• The aromatic NMVOCs benzene, toluene and xylene are
suspected carcinogens and may lead to leukemia with prolonged
exposure.
• 1,3-butadiene is another dangerous compound often associated
with industrial use.
 Persistent free radicals connected to airborne fine particles are linked
to cardiopulmonary disease.
 Toxic metals, such as lead and mercury, especially their compounds
 Particulates
• alternatively referred to as particulate matter (PM), atmospheric particulate
matter, or fine particles, are tiny particles of solid or liquid suspended in a gas.
• In contrast, aerosol refers to combined particles and gas.
• Some particulates occur naturally, originating from volcanoes, dust storms, forest
and grassland fires, living vegetation, and sea spray.
• Human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels in vehicles, power plants and
various industrial processes also generate significant amounts of aerosols.
• Averaged worldwide, anthropogenic aerosols—those made by human activities—
currently account for approximately 10 percent of our atmosphere.
• Increased levels of fine particles in the air are linked to health hazards such as
heart disease , altered lung function and lung cancer.
 Chlorofluorocarbons(CFCs)
• harmful to the ozone layer; emitted from products currently banned from use
• These are gases which are released from air conditioners, refrigerators, aerosol
sprays, etc.
• CFC's on being released into the air rises to stratosphere.
• Here they come in contact with other gases and damage the ozone layer.
• This allows harmful ultraviolet rays to reach the earth's surface.
• This can lead to skin cancer, disease to eye and can even cause damage to plants.
 Ammonia (NH3)
• Emitted from agricultural processes.
• Ammonia is a compound with the formula NH3.
• It is normally encountered as a gas with a characteristic pungent
odor.
• Ammonia contributes significantly to the nutritional needs of
terrestrial organisms by serving as a precursor to foodstuffs and
fertilizers.
• Ammonia, either directly or indirectly, is also a building block for
the synthesis of many pharmaceuticals.
• Although in wide use, ammonia is both caustic and hazardous.
• In the atmosphere, ammonia reacts with oxides of nitrogen and
sulphur to form secondary particles.
• Odors such as from garbage, sewage, and industrial processes.
• Radioactive pollutants produced by nuclear explosions, nuclear
events, war explosives, and natural processes such as
the radioactive decay of radon.
Secondary pollutants
• Particulates created from gaseous primary pollutants
and compounds in photochemical smog.
• Smog is a kind of air pollution.
• Classic smog results from large amounts of coal
burning in an area caused by a mixture of smoke and
sulfur dioxide.
• Modern smog does not usually come from coal but
from vehicular and industrial emissions that are acted
on in the atmosphere by ultraviolet light from the sun
to form secondary pollutants that also combine with
the primary emissions to form photochemical smog.
• Ground level ozone (O3) formed from NOx and VOCs.
Ozone (O3) is a key constituent of the troposphere.
• It is also an important constituent of certain regions
of the stratosphere commonly known as the Ozone
layer.
• Photochemical and chemical reactions involving it
drive many of the chemical processes that occur in
the atmosphere by day and by night.
• At abnormally high concentrations brought about by
human activities (largely the combustion of fossil
fuel), it is a pollutant, and a constituent of smog.
• Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) - similarly formed from
NOx and VOCs.
• Minor air pollutants include
• A large number of minor hazardous air pollutants.
• Some of these are regulated in USA under the Clean Air
Act and in Europe under the Air Framework Directive
• A variety of persistent organic pollutants, which can attach
to particulates
• Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are organic compounds that
are resistant to environmental degradation through
chemical, biological, and photolytic processes.
• Because of this, they have been observed to persist in the
environment, to be capable of long-range transport,
bioaccumulate in human and animal tissue, biomagnify in
food chains, and to have potential significant impacts on
human health and the environment.
Sources
• There are various locations, activities or
factors which are responsible for releasing
pollutants into the atmosphere.
• These sources can be classified into two major
categories.
Anthropogenic (man-made) sources
Natural sources
Anthropogenic (man-made) sources:
• These are mostly related to the burning of multiple types of fuel.
• Stationary Sources include smoke stacks of power plants, manufacturing facilities
(factories) and waste incinerators, as well as furnaces and other types of fuel-burning
heating devices.
• In developing and poor countries, traditional biomass burning is the major source of air
pollutants; traditional biomass includes wood, crop waste and dung.
• Mobile Sources include motor vehicles, marine vessels, and aircraft.
• Chemicals', dust and controlled burn practices in agriculture and forest management'.
• Controlled or prescribed burning is a technique sometimes used in forest management,
farming, prairie restoration or greenhouse gas abatement.
• Fire is a natural part of both forest and grassland ecology and controlled fire can be a tool
for foresters.
• Controlled burning stimulates the germination of some desirable forest trees, thus
renewing the forest.
• Fumes from paint, hair spray, varnish, aerosol sprays and other solvents
• Waste deposition in landfills, which generate methane.
• Methane is highly flammable and may form explosive mixtures with air. Methane is also
an asphyxiant and may displace oxygen in an enclosed space.
• Asphyxia or suffocation may result if the oxygen concentration is reduced to below 19.5%
by displacement.
• Military resources, such as nuclear weapons, toxic gases, germ warfare and rocketry
• Natural sources
• Dust from natural sources, usually large areas of land with few or no
vegetation
• Methane, emitted by the digestion of food by animals, for example cattle
• Radon gas from radioactive decay within the Earth's crust.
• Radon is a colourless , odour less, naturally occurring, radioactive noble
gas that is formed from the decay of radium.
• It is considered to be a health hazard. Radon gas from natural sources can
accumulate in buildings, especially in confined areas such as the
basement and it is the second most frequent cause of lung cancer,
after cigarette smoking.
• Smoke and carbon monoxide from wildfires
• Vegetation, in some regions, emits environmentally significant amounts of
VOCs on warmer days.
• These VOCs react with primary anthropogenic pollutants—specifically,
NOx, SO2, and anthropogenic organic carbon compounds—to produce a
seasonal haze of secondary pollutants
• Volcanic activity, which produces sulfur , chlorine , and ash particulates
Causes of Air pollution
1. Burning of Fossil Fuels:
• Sulfur dioxide emitted from the combustion of fossil fuels
like coal, petroleum and other factory combustibles is one
the major cause of air pollution.
• Pollution emitting from vehicles including trucks, jeeps,
cars, trains, airplanes cause immense amount of pollution.
• We rely on them to fulfil our daily basic needs of
transportation. But, there overuse is killing our
environment as dangerous gases are polluting the
environment.
• Carbon Mono oxide caused by improper or incomplete
combustion and generally emitted from vehicles is another
major pollutant along with Nitrogen Oxides, that is
produced from both natural and man made processes.
• 2. Agricultural activities:
• Ammonia is a very common by product from agriculture
related activities and is one of the most hazardous gases in
the atmosphere.
• Use of insecticides, pesticides and fertilizers in agricultural
activities has grown quite a lot.
• They emit harmful chemicals into the air and can also
cause water pollution.
• 3. Exhaust from factories and industries:
• Manufacturing industries release large amount of carbon
monoxide, hydrocarbons, organic compounds, and
chemicals into the air thereby depleting the quality of air.
• Manufacturing industries can be found at every corner of
the earth and there is no area that has not been affected by
it.
• Petroleum refineries also release hydrocarbons and various
other chemicals that pollute the air and also cause land
pollution.
• 4. Mining operations: Mining is a process wherein minerals
below the earth are extracted using large equipments.
• During the process dust and chemicals are released in the
air causing massive air pollution.
• This is one of the reason which is responsible for the
deteriorating health conditions of workers and nearby
residents.
• 5. Indoor air pollution:
• Household cleaning products, painting supplies emit toxic
chemicals in the air and cause air pollution.
• Have you ever noticed that once you paint walls of your
house, it creates some sort of smell which makes it literally
impossible for you to breathe.
• 6. Suspended particulate matter:
• popular by its acronym SPM, is another cause of pollution.
Referring to the particles afloat in the air, SPM is usually
caused by dust, combustion etc.
Effects of Air pollution On Human Health
• Respiratory and heart problems:
• The effects of Air pollution are alarming.
• They are known to create several respiratory and
heart conditions along with Cancer, among other
threats to the body.
• Several millions are known to have died due to
direct or indirect effects of Air pollution.
• Children in areas exposed to air pollutants are
said to commonly suffer from pneumonia and
asthma
• Air pollution is a significant risk factor for a number of health conditions
including respiratory infections, heart disease, COPD, stroke and lung
cancer.
• The health effects caused by air pollution may include difficulty in
breathing, wheezing, coughing, asthma and worsening of existing
respiratory and cardiac conditions.
• These effects can result in increased medication use, increased doctor or
emergency room visits, more hospital admissions and premature death.
• The human health effects of poor air quality are far reaching, but
principally affect the body's respiratory system and the cardiovascular
system.
• Individual reactions to air pollutants depend on the type of pollutant a
person is exposed to, the degree of exposure, the individual's health
status and genetics.
• The most common sources of air pollution include particulates, ozone,
nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide.
• Children aged less than five years that live in developing countries are the
most vulnerable population in terms of total deaths attributable to indoor
and outdoor air pollution
Mortality
• It is estimated that some 7 million premature deaths may be attributed to air pollution.
• India has the highest death rate due to air pollution.
• India also has more deaths from asthma than any other nation according to the World Health
Organisation.
• In December 2013 air pollution was estimated to kill 500,000 people in China each year.
• There is a correlation between pneumonia related deaths and air pollution from motor
vehicles.
• Air pollution is estimated to reduce life expectancy by almost nine months across the European
Union.
• Causes of deaths include strokes, heart disease, COPD, lung cancer, and lung infections.
Cardiovascular disease
• A 2007 review of evidence found ambient air pollution exposure is a risk factor correlating with
increased total mortality from cardiovascular events (range: 12% to 14% per a 10
microg/m3increase).
• Air pollution is also emerging as a risk factor for stroke, particularly in developing countries
where pollutant levels are highest.
• A 2007 study found that in women air pollution is associated not with hemorrhagic but with
ischemic stroke.
• Air pollution was also found to be associated with increased incidence and mortality from
coronary stroke in a cohort study in 2011.
• Associations are believed to be causal and effects may be mediated by vasoconstriction, low-
grade inflammation or autonomic nervous system imbalance or other mechanisms.
Air Pollution Causes Following
Other Diseases In Human Beings
• Cystic fibrosis
• Lung disease
• Cancer
• Difficulty in breathing
• Wheezing
• Coughing
• Asthma
• Worsening of existing respiratory and
cardiac conditions
Effects Of Air Pollutions On Materials
• In buildings containing books, historical artefacts or other
works of art indoor pollutants may cause significant
degradation.
• These pollutants may either be lower concentrations of
pollutants originating outdoors or other substances
generated from synthetic materials, paints, varnishes and
display cases as well as from combustion for heating.
• The materials most sensitive to pollutants are calcareous
building stones and ferrous metals.
• Manifestations of damage include losses of mass, changes in
porosity, discoloration and embrittlement.
• In the case of stone it is difficult to (1) dissociate the effects
of historical concentrations of pollution from current ones
and (2) to establish background rates of erosion or decay in
the absence of pollutants.
effects of air pollution on animals
• Just like humans, animals also face some devastating
affects of air pollution.
• Toxic chemicals present in the air can force wildlife
species to move to new place and change their
habitat.
• The toxic pollutants deposit over the surface of the
water and can also affect sea animals.
• Eutrophication is a condition where high amount of
nitrogen present in some pollutants gets developed
on sea’s surface and turns itself into algae and and
adversely affect fish, plants and animal species.
• The green colored algae that is present on lakes and
ponds is due to presence of this chemical only.
• Air pollution injury to plants can be evident in several ways.
• Injury to foliage may be visible in a short time and appear as
necrotic lesions (dead tissue), or it can develop slowly as a
yellowing or chlorosis of the leaf. There may be a reduction in
growth of various portions of a plant.
• Plants may be killed outright, but they usually do not succumb
until they have suffered recurrent injury.
• Chronic injury is caused by long-term absorption of sulfur
dioxide at sub-lethal concentrations. The symptoms appear as a
yellowing or chlorosis of the leaf, and occasionally as a bronzing
on the under surface of the leaves.
• Fluorides are discharged into the atmosphere from the
combustion of coal; the production of brick, tile, enamel frit,
ceramics, and glass; the manufacture of aluminium and steel;
and the production of hydrofluoric acid, phosphate chemicals
and fertilizers.

• Air pollutants can harm ecological resources, including water quality, soils, plants,
and animals.
• Ozone, for example, can cause damage to plant tissues and reduced growth in
some sensitive plant species.
• The National Park Service conducts studies in parks to help understand how and
where air pollution is affecting ecosystems.
• We use this information to develop pollution reduction goals for parks where
ecosystems are damaged.
• Nitrogen and sulfur in air pollution are carried by rain, snow, and fog into park
ecosystems where they threaten sensitive aquatic and terrestrial resources.
• Nitrogen and sulfur compounds deposited from the air can cause acidification of
soils, lakes, and streams.
• Although nitrogen is an essential plant nutrient, excess nitrogen in soils and
surface waters may also disrupt soil nutrient cycling and alter plant communities.
• Metals (such as mercury) and toxic compounds (like pesticides) can be deposited
from the atmosphere and bioaccumulate in the food chain.
• This can cause behavioral, neurological, and reproductive effects in fish, birds,
and wildlife.
• Acid Rain: Harmful gases like nitrogen oxides and sulfur
oxides are released into the atmosphere during the
burning of fossil fuels. When it rains, the water
droplets combines with these air pollutants, becomes
acidic and then falls on the ground in the form of acid
rain. Acid rain can cause great damage to human,
animals and crops.
• Depletion of Ozone layer: Ozone exists in earth’s
stratosphere and is responsible for protecting humans
from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.
• Earth’s ozone layer is depleting due to the presence of
chlorofluorocarbons, hydro chlorofluorocarbons in
the atmosphere.
• As ozone layer will go thin, it will emit harmful rays
back on earth and can cause skin and eye related
problems. UV rays also have the capability to affect
crops.
Solutions for Air Pollution
• 1. Use public mode of transportation: Encourage people to use
more and more public modes of transportation to reduce
pollution.
• Also, try to make use of car pooling.
• If you and your colleagues come from the same locality and
have same timings you can explore this option to save energy
and money.
• 2. Conserve energy: Switch off fans and lights when you are
going out.
• Large amount of fossil fuels are burnt to produce electricity. You
can save the environment from degradation by reducing the
amount of fossil fuels to be burned.
• 3. Understand the concept of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle: Do
not throw away items that are of no use to you.
• In-fact reuse them for some other purpose.
• For e.g. you can use old jars to store cereals or pulses.
• 4. Emphasis on clean energy resources:
• Clean energy technologies like solar, wind and geothermal are on high
these days.
• Governments of various countries have been providing grants to
consumers who are interested in installing solar panels for their home.
• This will go a long way to curb air pollution.
• 5. Use energy efficient devices:
• CFL lights consume less electricity as against their counterparts.
• They live longer, consume less electricity, lower electricity bills and also
help you to reduce pollution by consuming less energy.
• Several attempts are being made world wide on a personal, industrial and
governmental levels to curb the intensity at which Air Pollution is rising
and regain a balance as far as the proportions of the foundation gases are
concerned.
• This is a direct attempt at slacking Global warming.
• We are seeing a series of innovations and experiments aimed at alternate
and unconventional options to reduce pollutants.
• Air Pollution is one of the larger mirrors of man’s follies, and a challenge
we need to overcome to see a tomorrow.

Air pollution

  • 2. • Pollution is now a common place term, that our ears are attuned to. We hear about the various forms of pollution and read about it through the mass media. • Air pollution is one such form that refers to the contamination of the air, irrespective of indoors or outside. • A physical, biological or chemical alteration to the air in the atmosphere can be termed as pollution. • It occurs when any harmful gases, dust, smoke enters into the atmosphere and makes it difficult for plants, animals and humans to survive as the air becomes dirty.
  • 3. • Air pollution can further be classified into two sections- Visible air pollution Invisible air pollution • Another way of looking at Air pollution could be any substance that holds the potential to hinder the atmosphere or the well being of the living beings surviving in it. • The sustainment of all things living is due to a combination of gases that collectively form the atmosphere; the imbalance caused by the increase or decrease of the percentage of these gases can be harmful for survival.
  • 4. • The Ozone layer considered crucial for the existence of the ecosystems on the planet is depleting due to increased pollution. • Global warming, a direct result of the increased imbalance of gases in the atmosphere has come to be known as the biggest threat and challenge that the contemporary world has to overcome in a bid for survival.
  • 5. Types of Pollutants • In order to understand the causes of Air pollution, several divisions can be made. • Primarily air pollutants can be caused by primary sources or secondary sources. The pollutants that are a direct result of the process can be called primary pollutants. A classic example of a primary pollutant would be the sulfur-dioxide emitted from factories. • Secondary pollutants are the ones that are caused by the inter mingling and reactions of primary pollutants. Smog created by the interactions of several primary pollutants is known to be as secondary pollutant.
  • 6. • Sulphur oxides (SOx) - particularly sulfur dioxide, a chemical compound with the formula SO2. • SO2 is produced by volcanoes and in various industrial processes. • Coal and petroleum often contain sulfur compounds, and their combustion generates sulfur dioxide. • Further oxidation of SO2, usually in the presence of a catalyst such as NO2, forms H2SO4, and thus acid rain. • This is one of the causes for concern over the environmental impact of the use of these fuels as power sources.   • 7.  Nitrogen oxides (NOx) • Nitrogen oxides, particularly nitrogen dioxide, are expelled from high temperature combustion, and are also produced during thunderstorms by electric discharge. • They can be seen as a brown haze dome above or a plume downwind of cities. • Nitrogen dioxide is a chemical compound with the formula NO2. • It is one of several nitrogen oxides. • One of the most prominent air pollutants, this reddish- brown toxic gas has a characteristic sharp, biting odor.  Carbon monoxide (CO) • CO is a colourless, odourless, toxic yet non-irritating gas. • It is a product by incomplete combustion of fuel such as natural gas, coal or wood. • Vehicular exhaust is a major source of carbon monoxide.
  • 8.  Volatile organic compounds • VOCs are a well-known outdoor air pollutant. • They are categorized as either methane (CH4) or non-methane (NMVOCs). • Methane is an extremely efficient greenhouse gas which contributes to enhanced global warming. • Other hydrocarbon VOCs are also significant greenhouse gases because of their role in creating ozone and prolonging the life of methane in the atmosphere. • This effect varies depending on local air quality. • The aromatic NMVOCs benzene, toluene and xylene are suspected carcinogens and may lead to leukemia with prolonged exposure. • 1,3-butadiene is another dangerous compound often associated with industrial use.  Persistent free radicals connected to airborne fine particles are linked to cardiopulmonary disease.  Toxic metals, such as lead and mercury, especially their compounds
  • 9.  Particulates • alternatively referred to as particulate matter (PM), atmospheric particulate matter, or fine particles, are tiny particles of solid or liquid suspended in a gas. • In contrast, aerosol refers to combined particles and gas. • Some particulates occur naturally, originating from volcanoes, dust storms, forest and grassland fires, living vegetation, and sea spray. • Human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels in vehicles, power plants and various industrial processes also generate significant amounts of aerosols. • Averaged worldwide, anthropogenic aerosols—those made by human activities— currently account for approximately 10 percent of our atmosphere. • Increased levels of fine particles in the air are linked to health hazards such as heart disease , altered lung function and lung cancer.  Chlorofluorocarbons(CFCs) • harmful to the ozone layer; emitted from products currently banned from use • These are gases which are released from air conditioners, refrigerators, aerosol sprays, etc. • CFC's on being released into the air rises to stratosphere. • Here they come in contact with other gases and damage the ozone layer. • This allows harmful ultraviolet rays to reach the earth's surface. • This can lead to skin cancer, disease to eye and can even cause damage to plants.
  • 10.  Ammonia (NH3) • Emitted from agricultural processes. • Ammonia is a compound with the formula NH3. • It is normally encountered as a gas with a characteristic pungent odor. • Ammonia contributes significantly to the nutritional needs of terrestrial organisms by serving as a precursor to foodstuffs and fertilizers. • Ammonia, either directly or indirectly, is also a building block for the synthesis of many pharmaceuticals. • Although in wide use, ammonia is both caustic and hazardous. • In the atmosphere, ammonia reacts with oxides of nitrogen and sulphur to form secondary particles. • Odors such as from garbage, sewage, and industrial processes. • Radioactive pollutants produced by nuclear explosions, nuclear events, war explosives, and natural processes such as the radioactive decay of radon.
  • 11. Secondary pollutants • Particulates created from gaseous primary pollutants and compounds in photochemical smog. • Smog is a kind of air pollution. • Classic smog results from large amounts of coal burning in an area caused by a mixture of smoke and sulfur dioxide. • Modern smog does not usually come from coal but from vehicular and industrial emissions that are acted on in the atmosphere by ultraviolet light from the sun to form secondary pollutants that also combine with the primary emissions to form photochemical smog.
  • 12. • Ground level ozone (O3) formed from NOx and VOCs. Ozone (O3) is a key constituent of the troposphere. • It is also an important constituent of certain regions of the stratosphere commonly known as the Ozone layer. • Photochemical and chemical reactions involving it drive many of the chemical processes that occur in the atmosphere by day and by night. • At abnormally high concentrations brought about by human activities (largely the combustion of fossil fuel), it is a pollutant, and a constituent of smog. • Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) - similarly formed from NOx and VOCs.
  • 13. • Minor air pollutants include • A large number of minor hazardous air pollutants. • Some of these are regulated in USA under the Clean Air Act and in Europe under the Air Framework Directive • A variety of persistent organic pollutants, which can attach to particulates • Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are organic compounds that are resistant to environmental degradation through chemical, biological, and photolytic processes. • Because of this, they have been observed to persist in the environment, to be capable of long-range transport, bioaccumulate in human and animal tissue, biomagnify in food chains, and to have potential significant impacts on human health and the environment.
  • 14. Sources • There are various locations, activities or factors which are responsible for releasing pollutants into the atmosphere. • These sources can be classified into two major categories. Anthropogenic (man-made) sources Natural sources
  • 15. Anthropogenic (man-made) sources: • These are mostly related to the burning of multiple types of fuel. • Stationary Sources include smoke stacks of power plants, manufacturing facilities (factories) and waste incinerators, as well as furnaces and other types of fuel-burning heating devices. • In developing and poor countries, traditional biomass burning is the major source of air pollutants; traditional biomass includes wood, crop waste and dung. • Mobile Sources include motor vehicles, marine vessels, and aircraft. • Chemicals', dust and controlled burn practices in agriculture and forest management'. • Controlled or prescribed burning is a technique sometimes used in forest management, farming, prairie restoration or greenhouse gas abatement. • Fire is a natural part of both forest and grassland ecology and controlled fire can be a tool for foresters. • Controlled burning stimulates the germination of some desirable forest trees, thus renewing the forest. • Fumes from paint, hair spray, varnish, aerosol sprays and other solvents • Waste deposition in landfills, which generate methane. • Methane is highly flammable and may form explosive mixtures with air. Methane is also an asphyxiant and may displace oxygen in an enclosed space. • Asphyxia or suffocation may result if the oxygen concentration is reduced to below 19.5% by displacement. • Military resources, such as nuclear weapons, toxic gases, germ warfare and rocketry
  • 16. • Natural sources • Dust from natural sources, usually large areas of land with few or no vegetation • Methane, emitted by the digestion of food by animals, for example cattle • Radon gas from radioactive decay within the Earth's crust. • Radon is a colourless , odour less, naturally occurring, radioactive noble gas that is formed from the decay of radium. • It is considered to be a health hazard. Radon gas from natural sources can accumulate in buildings, especially in confined areas such as the basement and it is the second most frequent cause of lung cancer, after cigarette smoking. • Smoke and carbon monoxide from wildfires • Vegetation, in some regions, emits environmentally significant amounts of VOCs on warmer days. • These VOCs react with primary anthropogenic pollutants—specifically, NOx, SO2, and anthropogenic organic carbon compounds—to produce a seasonal haze of secondary pollutants • Volcanic activity, which produces sulfur , chlorine , and ash particulates
  • 17. Causes of Air pollution 1. Burning of Fossil Fuels: • Sulfur dioxide emitted from the combustion of fossil fuels like coal, petroleum and other factory combustibles is one the major cause of air pollution. • Pollution emitting from vehicles including trucks, jeeps, cars, trains, airplanes cause immense amount of pollution. • We rely on them to fulfil our daily basic needs of transportation. But, there overuse is killing our environment as dangerous gases are polluting the environment. • Carbon Mono oxide caused by improper or incomplete combustion and generally emitted from vehicles is another major pollutant along with Nitrogen Oxides, that is produced from both natural and man made processes.
  • 18. • 2. Agricultural activities: • Ammonia is a very common by product from agriculture related activities and is one of the most hazardous gases in the atmosphere. • Use of insecticides, pesticides and fertilizers in agricultural activities has grown quite a lot. • They emit harmful chemicals into the air and can also cause water pollution. • 3. Exhaust from factories and industries: • Manufacturing industries release large amount of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, organic compounds, and chemicals into the air thereby depleting the quality of air. • Manufacturing industries can be found at every corner of the earth and there is no area that has not been affected by it. • Petroleum refineries also release hydrocarbons and various other chemicals that pollute the air and also cause land pollution.
  • 19. • 4. Mining operations: Mining is a process wherein minerals below the earth are extracted using large equipments. • During the process dust and chemicals are released in the air causing massive air pollution. • This is one of the reason which is responsible for the deteriorating health conditions of workers and nearby residents. • 5. Indoor air pollution: • Household cleaning products, painting supplies emit toxic chemicals in the air and cause air pollution. • Have you ever noticed that once you paint walls of your house, it creates some sort of smell which makes it literally impossible for you to breathe. • 6. Suspended particulate matter: • popular by its acronym SPM, is another cause of pollution. Referring to the particles afloat in the air, SPM is usually caused by dust, combustion etc.
  • 20. Effects of Air pollution On Human Health • Respiratory and heart problems: • The effects of Air pollution are alarming. • They are known to create several respiratory and heart conditions along with Cancer, among other threats to the body. • Several millions are known to have died due to direct or indirect effects of Air pollution. • Children in areas exposed to air pollutants are said to commonly suffer from pneumonia and asthma
  • 21. • Air pollution is a significant risk factor for a number of health conditions including respiratory infections, heart disease, COPD, stroke and lung cancer. • The health effects caused by air pollution may include difficulty in breathing, wheezing, coughing, asthma and worsening of existing respiratory and cardiac conditions. • These effects can result in increased medication use, increased doctor or emergency room visits, more hospital admissions and premature death. • The human health effects of poor air quality are far reaching, but principally affect the body's respiratory system and the cardiovascular system. • Individual reactions to air pollutants depend on the type of pollutant a person is exposed to, the degree of exposure, the individual's health status and genetics. • The most common sources of air pollution include particulates, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide. • Children aged less than five years that live in developing countries are the most vulnerable population in terms of total deaths attributable to indoor and outdoor air pollution
  • 22. Mortality • It is estimated that some 7 million premature deaths may be attributed to air pollution. • India has the highest death rate due to air pollution. • India also has more deaths from asthma than any other nation according to the World Health Organisation. • In December 2013 air pollution was estimated to kill 500,000 people in China each year. • There is a correlation between pneumonia related deaths and air pollution from motor vehicles. • Air pollution is estimated to reduce life expectancy by almost nine months across the European Union. • Causes of deaths include strokes, heart disease, COPD, lung cancer, and lung infections. Cardiovascular disease • A 2007 review of evidence found ambient air pollution exposure is a risk factor correlating with increased total mortality from cardiovascular events (range: 12% to 14% per a 10 microg/m3increase). • Air pollution is also emerging as a risk factor for stroke, particularly in developing countries where pollutant levels are highest. • A 2007 study found that in women air pollution is associated not with hemorrhagic but with ischemic stroke. • Air pollution was also found to be associated with increased incidence and mortality from coronary stroke in a cohort study in 2011. • Associations are believed to be causal and effects may be mediated by vasoconstriction, low- grade inflammation or autonomic nervous system imbalance or other mechanisms.
  • 23. Air Pollution Causes Following Other Diseases In Human Beings • Cystic fibrosis • Lung disease • Cancer • Difficulty in breathing • Wheezing • Coughing • Asthma • Worsening of existing respiratory and cardiac conditions
  • 24. Effects Of Air Pollutions On Materials • In buildings containing books, historical artefacts or other works of art indoor pollutants may cause significant degradation. • These pollutants may either be lower concentrations of pollutants originating outdoors or other substances generated from synthetic materials, paints, varnishes and display cases as well as from combustion for heating. • The materials most sensitive to pollutants are calcareous building stones and ferrous metals. • Manifestations of damage include losses of mass, changes in porosity, discoloration and embrittlement. • In the case of stone it is difficult to (1) dissociate the effects of historical concentrations of pollution from current ones and (2) to establish background rates of erosion or decay in the absence of pollutants.
  • 25. effects of air pollution on animals • Just like humans, animals also face some devastating affects of air pollution. • Toxic chemicals present in the air can force wildlife species to move to new place and change their habitat. • The toxic pollutants deposit over the surface of the water and can also affect sea animals. • Eutrophication is a condition where high amount of nitrogen present in some pollutants gets developed on sea’s surface and turns itself into algae and and adversely affect fish, plants and animal species. • The green colored algae that is present on lakes and ponds is due to presence of this chemical only.
  • 26. • Air pollution injury to plants can be evident in several ways. • Injury to foliage may be visible in a short time and appear as necrotic lesions (dead tissue), or it can develop slowly as a yellowing or chlorosis of the leaf. There may be a reduction in growth of various portions of a plant. • Plants may be killed outright, but they usually do not succumb until they have suffered recurrent injury. • Chronic injury is caused by long-term absorption of sulfur dioxide at sub-lethal concentrations. The symptoms appear as a yellowing or chlorosis of the leaf, and occasionally as a bronzing on the under surface of the leaves. • Fluorides are discharged into the atmosphere from the combustion of coal; the production of brick, tile, enamel frit, ceramics, and glass; the manufacture of aluminium and steel; and the production of hydrofluoric acid, phosphate chemicals and fertilizers. effects of air pollution on plants
  • 27. effects of air pollution on ecosystem • Air pollutants can harm ecological resources, including water quality, soils, plants, and animals. • Ozone, for example, can cause damage to plant tissues and reduced growth in some sensitive plant species. • The National Park Service conducts studies in parks to help understand how and where air pollution is affecting ecosystems. • We use this information to develop pollution reduction goals for parks where ecosystems are damaged. • Nitrogen and sulfur in air pollution are carried by rain, snow, and fog into park ecosystems where they threaten sensitive aquatic and terrestrial resources. • Nitrogen and sulfur compounds deposited from the air can cause acidification of soils, lakes, and streams. • Although nitrogen is an essential plant nutrient, excess nitrogen in soils and surface waters may also disrupt soil nutrient cycling and alter plant communities. • Metals (such as mercury) and toxic compounds (like pesticides) can be deposited from the atmosphere and bioaccumulate in the food chain. • This can cause behavioral, neurological, and reproductive effects in fish, birds, and wildlife.
  • 28. • Acid Rain: Harmful gases like nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides are released into the atmosphere during the burning of fossil fuels. When it rains, the water droplets combines with these air pollutants, becomes acidic and then falls on the ground in the form of acid rain. Acid rain can cause great damage to human, animals and crops. • Depletion of Ozone layer: Ozone exists in earth’s stratosphere and is responsible for protecting humans from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. • Earth’s ozone layer is depleting due to the presence of chlorofluorocarbons, hydro chlorofluorocarbons in the atmosphere. • As ozone layer will go thin, it will emit harmful rays back on earth and can cause skin and eye related problems. UV rays also have the capability to affect crops.
  • 29. Solutions for Air Pollution • 1.
