When I got an English degree, all my business-school friends thought I was nuts: "You'll never get a job," they said. I think their point was that reading and writing was less valuable than, say, a bar graph.
Except that, as it turns out, even the sexiest of bar graphs is useless without some accompanying communications - which is where the reading and writing stuff comes in.
Today, I help businesses communicate better. Sometimes this means creating brand identities and marketing campaigns. Sometimes it just means putting better communication around their bar graphs. Either way, it's about making sure their stakeholders get their message - and understand it.
