Literacy Narrative Report
Literacy Narrative For the past seven years I have been employed as Front Desk Clerk for a hotel.
There are many forms of communication in a work place, though, I have chosen to discuss only two
in which I commonly use for my differing languages. One is the professional language I use when
speaking with guests, whether on the phone or in person. The other is an informal method of writing
I use to communicate with my co–workers. I feel this methods are at opposite ends of the spectrum,
but both have been proven effective for their own purposes. The following is a typical example of
the professional language I would use to respond to a guests complaint. "Yes, I'm aware of the
problem with our internet service, and I have contacted the service provider. Technicians are
working to remedy the issue as we speak; they have estimated that it will take...show more content...
The total for the CBL is located in the last box of the right hand column; the total for the credit card
settlement is at the very bottom of the report. If they do not match, please review the following
steps in order to find and correct the issue. Step one: Check all credit card receipts to ensure they
have been checked out for the correct amount by comparing the amount on the commercial business
log (for that specific guest) to the amount on their credit card receipt. If you find an amount that is
incorrect, go to the credit card machine: arrow down to Batch Review; enter the invoice number;
press the adjust button on the right side of the screen; and enter the new amount. The machine will
not automatically reprint a new receipt––– hit the print key, enter the invoice number and select
Merchant Copy. Once all receipts have been checked and are correct, run a new settlement report
and check both totals again. If this didn't fix the problem please continue on to the next

Literacy Narrative Analysis
"What is a literacy narrative?" A literacy narrative expressed in many different types of writing,
whether you're writing about a life changing experience or even a reflection on a book you have
just indulged your mind into, in which now you have to express how you interpreted it in your own
way. We don't realize that while we in the mist ofwriting a paper or even in a journal that at first it
may seem like we're just putting a bunch of useless words on a paper or even a screen, but instead
we lose ourselves in our thoughts that we probably didn't realize we had in the first place.
In high school, I had to constantly write responses to the prompts the teacher would assign. A
common concept of a prompt included "how as a person do you face...show more content...
For example, I've lived with a chronic illness called Dysautonomia since I was eleven years old, so
every chance I get to express my daily struggles I encounter and how I have learned to overcome
and except them, has made me a better writer because when you are able to write on an issue that is
not only very personal but also informative to the person who I sharing my writing with, it can
push the way you think so that you are writing something that will catch the reader's attention. In
contrast, I tend to struggle in my writing when I have very little interest in the topic, in which I
don't put in all of my effort to grab the reader's attention or put as many ideas I possibly can to
create something worth reading. The way I compensate for my lack of interest is by first
clustering together all of my ideas. Then I pick them apart the main ideas I have established, in
which now all that is left to do is find supporting ideas to flow with the main ones. I've learned
over the years, that the reader needs to know why I have or do not have a stance on an

The Literacy Narrative
The literacy narratives were not only a means to base where my writing skills are at, but take in
information about people I barely know. Amongst my group, I would have to say the two foreign
students had my attention indefinitely the entire time, because I was intrigued to hear about their
journey to the U.S. The both of them had suffered great culture shock and went through the tedious
process of learning American English. I can only assume that the difficulty was astronomical at first,
due to the fact that we don't speak proper English a majority of the time, which conflicts with the
rigid learning that comes with learning a secondary language. It's something about that culture shock
that interests me as it shows a certain determination

Literacy Narrative When I first took a look at my first assignment for English Composition I – Write
a Literacy Narrative. The first thought it came to mind was "ESL" (English as of Second
Language). I started to reminisce about my first year as a freshman in High School. It was the
fall of 1985; I just had arrived from Colombia as an exchange student. On the first day of School, I
reported to the front office, still not knowing what to say or what to do. I was completely lost
and scared; the nice lady at the desk looked at me with a smile and started to talk. I did not
understand a single word of what she was saying at that time, except "Hello". After a few minutes
of silence and staring at each other, I gave her a piece of paper that my...show more content...

Geography, Math, Science, but English? I was just completely in a mortified stage. Would I
understand the teacher, classmates? Would I be able to speak clearly enough, so they would
understand me? That weekend, before I was to report to my first all–English class on Monday, I did
not sleep nor could I eat anything thinking about that moment. Monday morning I walked into
Mr. Garfield English classroom. Mr. Garret was aware of me been assigned to his class; he was
standing right at the door. When I came in, the first thing Mr. Garret did, was to ask the class to
be quiet for a minute. He then proceeded to introduce me to them. I had never felt such a panic as
I did at that moment. I was sweating, quivering; I felt a thousand eyes just staring at me. Mr.

How To Write A Literacy Narrative Essay
On the other hand, writing on topics that fascinate and intrigue me, is rather enjoyable than feeling
like a chore. Ideas stream and words flow naturally without having to mimic and echo others voice.
A literacy narrative is a piece of text written from my own perspective for the intermediate English
composition class. A literacy narrative is anessay about my writing and reading literacy, looking
back to various incidents with a brand new outlook. Writing this essay allowed me to revisit and
assess highlights that contributed to my writing and reading literacy. The main goal of literacy

Literacy Narrative: My Interest In The Classroom
Literacy Narrative Since I was a child in elementary school I was always interested in the
sciences. To me it never seemed to matter what type; it could be space science, biology, or even
chemistry that I would awe over. Without reading and writing I would never be able to accomplish
the understanding that I have today about science; without it I would be in complete ignorance of
how evolution and biology worked, or why baking is just palatable chemical reaction, I would have
never been able to expand my knowledge outside of what the classroom taught me. I remember
when I was still in elementary school all I wanted to learn about was the ocean, but there were no
topics of discussion that even narrowly correlated to that subject; I was left...show more content...
Being able to write is how I got to search for new information and being able to read was how I
absorbed the newly found content. The internet was such an amazing thing, biology and evolution
wasn't at all what I had thought or learned by word of mouth. I was always convinced evolution
meant we came from monkeys, but my research outside of school lead me to the truth; that there are
five ways evolution occurs. One is when a population of a species is secluded and left without a
connection to other populations. Without any connection they have created a gene pool; this doesn't
mean everyone it mating with their relatives, but it means they have less chance of diversity than the
populations that are not secluded and therefore the features that may have once been non–dominant
will now become more and more prevalent in those who are secluded. Eventually the secluded
population will no longer share enough DNA with the free population to reproduce with each
other, thus becoming a new species regardless of how similar they may look. I would have never
learned any of this in school; at least I wasn't learning it when I wanted to. Of course when the
subject finally arose when I was a junior in high school I knew far more than what was expected of
me which inadvertently helped me to pass all the tests and examinations we were

Example Of Literacy Narrative Essay
Literacy Narrative "School made us 'literate' but did not teach us to read for pleasure." –Ambeth R.
Ocampo Growing up with English not being my first language was difficult. My parents knew
how to speak it, but they still didn't know to how to pronounce or define some words. I knew how
to speak English very well, but reading was sometimes hard for me. In order for me to learn, my
brother would read bedtime stories, and I would follow along. From my princess books to me
sitting down with him while he read his Captain Underpants comics. Anywhere I went I would try
to read anything I laid eyes on. From hotel names to road signs to menus to anything that could
help me improve. Already having an older brother who knew how to read very well, I took
advantage of that. My brother would help me pronounce different words, tell me what they meant,
and would applaud me for pronouncing them right. He was the main reason why I loved reading
so much; loved. The clear cut definition of literacy is the ability to read and write, pretty simple.
The more elaborate definition of literacy, though, is being able to read, write, and comprehend
what is being read or written. People apply it to everyday life such as reading a book for school to
reading a menu at a restaurant. Throughout...show more content...

English has never been my favorite class to take. I was more interested in math because there is
one answer to a question and that is it. With English, everyone writes differently. Style is difficult
to grade and there is not a yes or no answer to an essay.
Reading the final draft of my literacy narrative, the parts that stick out to me is when I focus on
writing. Writing is a subject that is not difficult or unenjoyable to me. Yet I am awful at spelling
and grammar. This stands out to me because spelling and grammar are basically the backbone to
the subject. So I find it ironic that overall I enjoy the topic, but not the details in it. The message
that comes out of the literacy narrative is that I started to enjoy writing once it was made simple
to me. Also that I like it even better when the topic is not professional. When it comes to reading,
I am very picky. I only read the books with specific genres. I do not go out of my comfort zone when
it comes to reading because when I do, I do not enjoy what I am reading. The past voice in my
literacy narrative is all about reading and writing during my previous education. The now voice
comes from the experiences I have had in college. The conclusion of my paper is the now narrator.
There is not exactly a "take away" from the essay except that it ends with the present. That should

I was an academic brat. Although my mother endeavored to make my education as enjoyable and
insightful as learning can be I regularly dismissed doing anything above and beyond my
assignments. Void of the immense knowledge and blessing a competent scholar possessed, I went
about my younger years doing much with my hands, satisfied and foolish. Jumping off our roof,
darting down the zip line descending our enormous hill, playing "war" at the dump with my
brothers or trying to capsize each other's boats in the river rather than read a thrilling tale of Bilbo
Baggins and his enchanting quest to regain the Lonely Mountain. Amazed, I would peer into the
sky to catch a glimpse of an airplane majestically floating through the heavens and I would
suddenly felt a longing to soar the skies. While flying in my grandfather's ultralight at 3 years of
age, I first felt the yearning to be airborne. As the little plane rolled down the runway and I cried
out, "higher, faster, higher!" From then on I have been fascinated with every aspect of aviation.
Eventually, this is what would spur me on to becoming an accomplished literacy. As the years
went by I realized the simple need to be able to study and comprehend what I wanted to
accomplish. And circumstance played a factor. Once, our push mower broke down and I was
assigned the task of fixing our dilemma. Despite my best efforts, my rookie skills weren't enough
to better our situation. Even though I failed in reaching my goal, I endeavored to learn the inner
workings of a gasoline engine more thoroughly, and I was shocked at how much I didn't know, but
especially how much I learned by simply reading a book for five minutes! From then on I aspired to
read billboards, road signs, directions and the likes to further my newly fostered art. I was almost
more thrilled than my parents! So many unanswered questions were now at the focal

Literacy impacts everyone's lives in various ways. Such as, someone and their career, the ability
to read literature in general, one's comprehension of reading and writing, or the ability to write a
book. Each person takes his or her own path with literacy and consequently are formed by the
sponsors of literacy present in his or her life. Being new to the term or not, sponsors come in
various forms and can be positive or negative to someone and his or her literacy. The sponsors of
whom I am going highlight are my parents, The Sesame Street Show, and my elementary and middle
school St. Mary's all of whom have been positive sponsors to my literacy by setting high expectations
and providing quality teaching, which still impacts my literacy today.
Like many parents, mine were supportive of my learning and development at an early age and as
I grew, they read to me along with other learning techniques. My mother and father read various
children 's books to me in their spare time; and after I had matured some had me read along as
well. The books we read together consisted of fairy tale books and short stories such as The Turtle
and the Hare. Reading together helped me learn a wider variety of words and inspired myself to
pursue reading at an early age on my own. When I was around the age of four or five; my mother
and father bought me the leapfrog read along toy as a birthday gift. The toy came with children's
books and a pen that was used to follow along as

My Writing Experience Essay
Writing has always been my most difficult part of English. Reading, on the other hand, is
something I could do all day; however, with writing, I grimace just thinking about it. It was not
that I did not have anything to say, because I actually have quite a bit to say. I just could never
figure out how to phrase what I had to say in just right way on the page. My mom taught me to
read and write at a young age. After that, I would devour any book that I could get my hands on.
However, I have had trouble with writing since it became more than just my alphabet and numbers.

what she meant. My mom said, "Next time you will make it more fun, not so much like a
timeline, and more like a true story about your subject." This was my first experience in writing
for a grade. I learned a lot and I immediately applied to my future written assignments. I was in
high school the first time I had to write a narrative. I was a freshman. This was Ms. Bradley's first
time teaching at Union Christian Academy. On her first day, she gave us our syllabus and said, "I
do not accept late work, especially on writing assignments." We, literally, sat there stunned. My
freshman class had it very easy during eighth grade year. We were not expecting this. As I looked
through the syllabus, I saw that our first assignment was due in a week and it was a narrative. At
this time, I did not even know what a narrative was. Ms. Bradley explained that a narrative was an
account or story of events. It could be either true or false. Our narrative had to be true. It had to be
a true account of something that happened to us over the summer. She wanted to gauge how are
writing skills were. Our narrative had to be at least two to two and a half pages long. I chose to
write my first ever narrative on my trip to Fort Worth, Texas. Once again, I was plagued with
writer's block. I had the story in my head, but everything I

I have acquired many literacy opportunities throughout my literacy life my parents, grandparents,
and teachers ,I hold them very close to my heart because if it wasn't for them pushing and
encouraging me to read and write I wouldn't be the literate person I am today. I bear a huge family
so there are always many voices going through my head so it wasn't long until I started speaking,
as well as comprehending what all these strange words meant recognizing the words was very
difficult before I started practicing them. My parents always encouraged me to read and write in a
way no child can resist with toys and candy who could say no to that. Every chance they got to
help me read they would read with me. I wasn't forced to read on my own because I didn't know how.

I never understood the point of reading. My parents first introduced my siblings and I to its world at
the early age of two. We were familiarized with letters, taught to link sound the visual and formed
words with a stuttering start. We became accustomed to the quiet of Tuesday nights when my father
would sit huddled on the sofa – my mother curled up in bed – his long nose buried in a novel, a
black curtain cascading from her head to the pages, morphing into one with their respective books.
As the night drew close the browns of their eyes would light up, while my mother's red lips would

the neutral tones, and the word "infinite" stood out to me.
This moment, which is forever replayed in slow motion, is when that area of darkness began to shine.
My parents were raised in the third–world country of India, lucky to escape extreme poverty, but
living in poverty nonetheless. They grew up on the principal that literacy was their only escape
from the life they lived. They understood what it was to have nothing and realised that millions of
other people around the world would never get the same chance to escape – like the boy with the

I've never looked at a book the same. I now allow myself to get lost amongst the words, the
characters, the scenes; they all become real in my mind. I have a hunger for books and the stories
that can remove me from my surroundings. It came to my attention much later on, that the boy on

spoke Mandarin. It was just a way to escape his

Throughout my childhood, the idea of having a college education was greatly stressed. As a result,
it was my duty as the next generational child, to excel in my studies and achieve a life of prosperity
and success. Learning became the basic foundation of my growth. Therefore, my youth was
overtaken by many hours spent reading and writing what was known to be correct "Standard"
English. I first found this to be a great shortcoming, but as I grew older, I began to realize the many
rewards acquired by having the ability to be literate.

Unlike reading, when writing, it is important that grammar, spelling and vocabulary terms are
used correctly, therefore restricting me from writing in the way that I would prefer. The most
stressed phrase while in high school was, "It is not the content of the essay, but rather the
mechanics of grammar and speech that are most prominent." Unfortunately, I have never been
one to enjoy the art of writing. In fact, I was recently given a diagnostic test, determining at which
level I write and whether or not I should be upgraded to a higher achieving English class.
Unfortunately, I did not pass the test with flying colors. This was not due to the fact that I am
incapable of writing a good paper, but rather that I am unable to write in a limited amount of time,
using the emphasized principles of correct; grammar, vocabulary and spelling. In the reading,
Shitty First Drafts, by author Anne Lamott, it is a fact that in order to write a brilliant paper, a
first draft must be created. According to Lamott, "The Only way I can get anything written at all
is to write really, really shitty first drafts, all writers write them." (94) This is a quote in which I
can relate being that in order for me to begin a final draft, I must first have written a first draft,

Can you remember what your teacher taught you back in kindergarten? Chances are she was

because I did not think I was very good at either of the two, it had never been my favorite thing to

At this point in my life I find myself in an interesting predicament regarding my attitudes toward
reading and writing; more so towards reading. Years ago I used to love reading books for pleasure
but nowadays I find myself reading things that little to no effort to digest. This includes the very
basic posts on facebook expressing one's opinion on something or articles and threads on reddit
discussing topics I find intriguing. Perhaps it's the severe senioritis that has overcome me as I

You can feed the mind as much as you want and it will never get full of reading. Sadly, I'm not the
same person that I was. I guess you could say it's part of growing up. It never really was
intentional but it's just the way how it ended up. On the other hand my attitudes toward writing
are very different. First let me say that deep down I truly do not like to write. I myself don't
personally like to write for leisure or pleasure but rather I write because I believe it is one of the
most important aspects of being able to communicate with those around you, both personally and
professionally. To put differently, my attitude towards writing is that I write because I need to
write and survive in the world around me. I write because I have to, not because I want to.
Hopefully this somewhat makes sense. To better explain let me make a comparison. When I am
assigned a writing assignment or I am writing because the action is being forced upon me I find
myself not enjoying the process and overall the end result is subpar. The perfect example of this
would be my junior year in high school when I was enrolled in AP english literature. I dreaded the
majority of the class simply because there was so much writing involved in the entire course and
therefore I was constantly writing just to get a grade. Being forced to write in such high volume
every week for an entire school year was not enjoyable for myself and as a result the

Overcoming Literacy Narrative
My Journey to become Literate
I am sitting at my work desk reading an autobiography called the Blood of the Lambs, and I
ponder about the amount of time having passed since I have sat down to a nice personal evening
with a book. Upon reflection, I realize that the path I took to learning to read wasn't an easy one and
involved time, effort, and hard work.
As a young child, my memory of reading starts with a troubling period in my life. It started in first
grade after I had moved to a new school. For me he year kicked off normally, but the further down
the road, I found myself struggling to keep up in my reading class. In addition to falling behind in
my classes, I was feeling isolated from the other students. My grades started to suffer and
everything got worse. We didn't have a school counselor, so my principal arranged a meeting with
my parents to discuss what actions should be taken. My principal told my parents it isn't uncommon
for new students to fall behind in classes and that the move could be causing some of the issues. He
recommended that I start attending special education for my reading course. My parents thought it
over and explained to me that it was ok and not to be discouraged about this. However,...show more

was reading novels and books to my favorite movies. In addition to this, my folks bought me a
series of books like 20,000 Leagues under the Sea and Moby Dick. Also, some of my favorite books
were Star Wars and Star Trek novels that were new releases at the time. At this point in my life, I

think of reading when I'm out on the baseball field. When I hear the word "reading", unlike most
people, I think of a green grassy baseball diamond at night, with the lights lighting it up, filled
with fans in the stands. Believe it or not, I read all the time on the field. I read the ball coming off
the bat when I'm playing in the field. When I hear the "ding" of the metal bat and hard, rubber
ball colliding, I know that there is a chance I could make a great play. I can see the ball getting
bigger and bigger as in approaches me. I read the ball coming out of the pitcher's hand,...show more

I always enjoyed reading back then more than I do now. The books that I read now, I'm usually
forced to read and they usually aren't interesting to me. To me, reading means many things, not
only the reading of text on a page but actions of others and myself as well. Most other people may
not say that they will think of baseball games when thinking of how they read in real life, but I
view the game of baseball that way and I like to share about how I can read in many different
ways in life. Reading books is definitely not one of my favorite hobbies to do, but every once in a
while I will find a good book that will catch my interest for the next couple of months. My learning
experience from reading on the field has taught me another meaning of literacy that I would not
have realized if I had not thought about what reading really meant to me. I can now understand how
I use reading in all different aspects of my life better, and not just in the classroom but throughout
my everyday activities, like baseball.

Literacy Narrative Report Analysis

  • 1. Literacy Narrative Report Literacy Narrative For the past seven years I have been employed as Front Desk Clerk for a hotel. There are many forms of communication in a work place, though, I have chosen to discuss only two in which I commonly use for my differing languages. One is the professional language I use when speaking with guests, whether on the phone or in person. The other is an informal method of writing I use to communicate with my co–workers. I feel this methods are at opposite ends of the spectrum, but both have been proven effective for their own purposes. The following is a typical example of the professional language I would use to respond to a guests complaint. "Yes, I'm aware of the problem with our internet service, and I have contacted the service provider. Technicians are working to remedy the issue as we speak; they have estimated that it will take...show more content... The total for the CBL is located in the last box of the right hand column; the total for the credit card settlement is at the very bottom of the report. If they do not match, please review the following steps in order to find and correct the issue. Step one: Check all credit card receipts to ensure they have been checked out for the correct amount by comparing the amount on the commercial business log (for that specific guest) to the amount on their credit card receipt. If you find an amount that is incorrect, go to the credit card machine: arrow down to Batch Review; enter the invoice number; press the adjust button on the right side of the screen; and enter the new amount. The machine will not automatically reprint a new receipt––– hit the print key, enter the invoice number and select Merchant Copy. Once all receipts have been checked and are correct, run a new settlement report and check both totals again. If this didn't fix the problem please continue on to the next Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Literacy Narrative Analysis "What is a literacy narrative?" A literacy narrative expressed in many different types of writing, whether you're writing about a life changing experience or even a reflection on a book you have just indulged your mind into, in which now you have to express how you interpreted it in your own way. We don't realize that while we in the mist ofwriting a paper or even in a journal that at first it may seem like we're just putting a bunch of useless words on a paper or even a screen, but instead we lose ourselves in our thoughts that we probably didn't realize we had in the first place. In high school, I had to constantly write responses to the prompts the teacher would assign. A common concept of a prompt included "how as a person do you face...show more content... For example, I've lived with a chronic illness called Dysautonomia since I was eleven years old, so every chance I get to express my daily struggles I encounter and how I have learned to overcome and except them, has made me a better writer because when you are able to write on an issue that is not only very personal but also informative to the person who I sharing my writing with, it can push the way you think so that you are writing something that will catch the reader's attention. In contrast, I tend to struggle in my writing when I have very little interest in the topic, in which I don't put in all of my effort to grab the reader's attention or put as many ideas I possibly can to create something worth reading. The way I compensate for my lack of interest is by first clustering together all of my ideas. Then I pick them apart the main ideas I have established, in which now all that is left to do is find supporting ideas to flow with the main ones. I've learned over the years, that the reader needs to know why I have or do not have a stance on an Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. The Literacy Narrative The literacy narratives were not only a means to base where my writing skills are at, but take in information about people I barely know. Amongst my group, I would have to say the two foreign students had my attention indefinitely the entire time, because I was intrigued to hear about their journey to the U.S. The both of them had suffered great culture shock and went through the tedious process of learning American English. I can only assume that the difficulty was astronomical at first, due to the fact that we don't speak proper English a majority of the time, which conflicts with the rigid learning that comes with learning a secondary language. It's something about that culture shock that interests me as it shows a certain determination Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Literacy Narrative In ESL Literacy Narrative When I first took a look at my first assignment for English Composition I – Write a Literacy Narrative. The first thought it came to mind was "ESL" (English as of Second Language). I started to reminisce about my first year as a freshman in High School. It was the fall of 1985; I just had arrived from Colombia as an exchange student. On the first day of School, I reported to the front office, still not knowing what to say or what to do. I was completely lost and scared; the nice lady at the desk looked at me with a smile and started to talk. I did not understand a single word of what she was saying at that time, except "Hello". After a few minutes of silence and staring at each other, I gave her a piece of paper that my...show more content... I was so afraid, not because I would not be competent in the classes, but because I did not think I was ready for a full emergent in the language. I was competent and knowledgeable on the subjects assigned, Geography, Math, Science, but English? I was just completely in a mortified stage. Would I understand the teacher, classmates? Would I be able to speak clearly enough, so they would understand me? That weekend, before I was to report to my first all–English class on Monday, I did not sleep nor could I eat anything thinking about that moment. Monday morning I walked into Mr. Garfield English classroom. Mr. Garret was aware of me been assigned to his class; he was standing right at the door. When I came in, the first thing Mr. Garret did, was to ask the class to be quiet for a minute. He then proceeded to introduce me to them. I had never felt such a panic as I did at that moment. I was sweating, quivering; I felt a thousand eyes just staring at me. Mr. Garret quickly noticed my somber demeanor and immediately asked me to have a seat. I am sure he thought I was going to have a panic attack, and I'm not sure if I wouldn't have if he did not step in quickly and asked me to have a Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Ideas stream and words flow naturally without having to mimic and echo others voice. A literacy narrative is a piece of text written from my own perspective for the intermediate English composition class. A literacy narrative is anessay about my writing and reading literacy, looking back to various incidents with a brand new outlook. Writing this essay allowed me to revisit and assess highlights that contributed to my writing and reading literacy. • 6. Literacy Narrative: My Interest In The Classroom Literacy Narrative Since I was a child in elementary school I was always interested in the sciences. To me it never seemed to matter what type; it could be space science, biology, or even chemistry that I would awe over. Without reading and writing I would never be able to accomplish the understanding that I have today about science; without it I would be in complete ignorance of how evolution and biology worked, or why baking is just palatable chemical reaction, I would have never been able to expand my knowledge outside of what the classroom taught me. I remember when I was still in elementary school all I wanted to learn about was the ocean, but there were no topics of discussion that even narrowly correlated to that subject; I was left...show more content... Being able to write is how I got to search for new information and being able to read was how I absorbed the newly found content. The internet was such an amazing thing, biology and evolution wasn't at all what I had thought or learned by word of mouth. I was always convinced evolution meant we came from monkeys, but my research outside of school lead me to the truth; that there are five ways evolution occurs. One is when a population of a species is secluded and left without a connection to other populations. Without any connection they have created a gene pool; this doesn't mean everyone it mating with their relatives, but it means they have less chance of diversity than the populations that are not secluded and therefore the features that may have once been non–dominant will now become more and more prevalent in those who are secluded. Eventually the secluded population will no longer share enough DNA with the free population to reproduce with each other, thus becoming a new species regardless of how similar they may look. I would have never learned any of this in school; at least I wasn't learning it when I wanted to. Of course when the subject finally arose when I was a junior in high school I knew far more than what was expected of me which inadvertently helped me to pass all the tests and examinations we were Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Example Of Literacy Narrative Essay Literacy Narrative "School made us 'literate' but did not teach us to read for pleasure." –Ambeth R. Ocampo Growing up with English not being my first language was difficult. My parents knew how to speak it, but they still didn't know to how to pronounce or define some words. I knew how to speak English very well, but reading was sometimes hard for me. In order for me to learn, my brother would read bedtime stories, and I would follow along. From my princess books to me sitting down with him while he read his Captain Underpants comics. Anywhere I went I would try to read anything I laid eyes on. From hotel names to road signs to menus to anything that could help me improve. Already having an older brother who knew how to read very well, I took advantage of that. My brother would help me pronounce different words, tell me what they meant, and would applaud me for pronouncing them right. He was the main reason why I loved reading so much; loved. The clear cut definition of literacy is the ability to read and write, pretty simple. The more elaborate definition of literacy, though, is being able to read, write, and comprehend what is being read or written. People apply it to everyday life such as reading a book for school to reading a menu at a restaurant. Throughout...show more content... • 8. My Literacy Narrative English has never been my favorite class to take. I was more interested in math because there is one answer to a question and that is it. With English, everyone writes differently. Style is difficult to grade and there is not a yes or no answer to an essay. Reading the final draft of my literacy narrative, the parts that stick out to me is when I focus on writing. Writing is a subject that is not difficult or unenjoyable to me. Yet I am awful at spelling and grammar. This stands out to me because spelling and grammar are basically the backbone to the subject. So I find it ironic that overall I enjoy the topic, but not the details in it. The message that comes out of the literacy narrative is that I started to enjoy writing once it was made simple to me. Also that I like it even better when the topic is not professional. When it comes to reading, I am very picky. I only read the books with specific genres. I do not go out of my comfort zone when it comes to reading because when I do, I do not enjoy what I am reading. The past voice in my literacy narrative is all about reading and writing during my previous education. The now voice comes from the experiences I have had in college. The conclusion of my paper is the now narrator. There is not exactly a "take away" from the essay except that it ends with the present. That should probably...show more content... That has always been my goal for all classes I take. Of course I know that there is more to classes than a grade. But I see the grade as most important. The concepts and lessons that are taught obviously should stick with the students. However to me, memorizing the work for the test is first priority. • 9. Narrative Of Literacy Narrative Literacy narrative. I was an academic brat. Although my mother endeavored to make my education as enjoyable and insightful as learning can be I regularly dismissed doing anything above and beyond my assignments. Void of the immense knowledge and blessing a competent scholar possessed, I went about my younger years doing much with my hands, satisfied and foolish. Jumping off our roof, darting down the zip line descending our enormous hill, playing "war" at the dump with my brothers or trying to capsize each other's boats in the river rather than read a thrilling tale of Bilbo Baggins and his enchanting quest to regain the Lonely Mountain. Amazed, I would peer into the sky to catch a glimpse of an airplane majestically floating through the heavens and I would suddenly felt a longing to soar the skies. While flying in my grandfather's ultralight at 3 years of age, I first felt the yearning to be airborne. As the little plane rolled down the runway and I cried out, "higher, faster, higher!" From then on I have been fascinated with every aspect of aviation. Eventually, this is what would spur me on to becoming an accomplished literacy. As the years went by I realized the simple need to be able to study and comprehend what I wanted to accomplish. And circumstance played a factor. Once, our push mower broke down and I was assigned the task of fixing our dilemma. Despite my best efforts, my rookie skills weren't enough to better our situation. Even though I failed in reaching my goal, I endeavored to learn the inner workings of a gasoline engine more thoroughly, and I was shocked at how much I didn't know, but especially how much I learned by simply reading a book for five minutes! From then on I aspired to read billboards, road signs, directions and the likes to further my newly fostered art. I was almost more thrilled than my parents! • 11. Literacy : My Literacy Narrative My Literacy Narrative Literacy impacts everyone's lives in various ways. Such as, someone and their career, the ability to read literature in general, one's comprehension of reading and writing, or the ability to write a book. Each person takes his or her own path with literacy and consequently are formed by the sponsors of literacy present in his or her life. Being new to the term or not, sponsors come in various forms and can be positive or negative to someone and his or her literacy. The sponsors of whom I am going highlight are my parents, The Sesame Street Show, and my elementary and middle school St. Mary's all of whom have been positive sponsors to my literacy by setting high expectations and providing quality teaching, which still impacts my literacy today. Like many parents, mine were supportive of my learning and development at an early age and as I grew, they read to me along with other learning techniques. My mother and father read various children 's books to me in their spare time; and after I had matured some had me read along as well. The books we read together consisted of fairy tale books and short stories such as The Turtle and the Hare. Reading together helped me learn a wider variety of words and inspired myself to pursue reading at an early age on my own. When I was around the age of four or five; my mother and father bought me the leapfrog read along toy as a birthday gift. The toy came with children's books and a pen that was used to follow along as Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Reading, on the other hand, is something I could do all day; however, with writing, I grimace just thinking about it. It was not that I did not have anything to say, because I actually have quite a bit to say. I just could never figure out how to phrase what I had to say in just right way on the page. My mom taught me to read and write at a young age. After that, I would devour any book that I could get my hands on. I asked her what she meant. My mom said, "Next time you will make it more fun, not so much like a timeline, and more like a true story about your subject." This was my first experience in writing for a grade. I learned a lot and I immediately applied to my future written assignments. I was in high school the first time I had to write a narrative. I was a freshman. This was Ms. Bradley's first time teaching at Union Christian Academy. On her first day, she gave us our syllabus and said, "I do not accept late work, especially on writing assignments." We, literally, sat there stunned. My freshman class had it very easy during eighth grade year. We were not expecting this. As I looked through the syllabus, I saw that our first assignment was due in a week and it was a narrative. At this time, I did not even know what a narrative was. Ms. Bradley explained that a narrative was an account or story of events. It could be either true or false. Our narrative had to be true. It had to be a true account of something that happened to us over the summer. She wanted to gauge how are writing skills were. Our narrative had to be at least two to two and a half pages long. I chose to write my first ever narrative on my trip to Fort Worth, Texas. Once again, I was plagued with writer's block. I had the story in my head, but everything I Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Personal Narrative Of My Literacy Life I have acquired many literacy opportunities throughout my literacy life my parents, grandparents, and teachers ,I hold them very close to my heart because if it wasn't for them pushing and encouraging me to read and write I wouldn't be the literate person I am today. I bear a huge family so there are always many voices going through my head so it wasn't long until I started speaking, as well as comprehending what all these strange words meant recognizing the words was very difficult before I started practicing them. • 14. Literacy Narrative INFINITE Final Draft 18/3/13 Word Count: 777 I never understood the point of reading. My parents first introduced my siblings and I to its world at the early age of two. We were familiarized with letters, taught to link sound the visual and formed words with a stuttering start. We became accustomed to the quiet of Tuesday nights when my father would sit huddled on the sofa – my mother curled up in bed – his long nose buried in a novel, a black curtain cascading from her head to the pages, morphing into one with their respective books. As the night drew close the browns of their eyes would light up, while my mother's red lips would quiver with excitement and my father would flash a lopsided smile. His black hair flopped down over his eyes as he stared intently into a book held tightly in his hands, seemingly ignoring the chaos I saw around him. The blue of the cover stood out amongst the neutral tones, and the word "infinite" stood out to me. This moment, which is forever replayed in slow motion, is when that area of darkness began to shine. My parents were raised in the third–world country of India, lucky to escape extreme poverty, but living in poverty nonetheless. They grew up on the principal that literacy was their only escape from the life they lived. They understood what it was to have nothing and realised that millions of other people around the world would never get the same chance to escape – like the boy with the book. This is why we were taken overseas; to be shown how lucky we are, even to have the simple things. I've never looked at a book the same. I now allow myself to get lost amongst the words, the characters, the scenes; they all become real in my mind. I have a hunger for books and the stories that can remove me from my surroundings. It came to my attention much later on, that the boy on the road probably didn't even know what he was reading – the title was English and he most likely spoke Mandarin. It was just a way to escape his Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Essay on Literacy Narrative Throughout my childhood, the idea of having a college education was greatly stressed. As a result, it was my duty as the next generational child, to excel in my studies and achieve a life of prosperity and success. Learning became the basic foundation of my growth. Therefore, my youth was overtaken by many hours spent reading and writing what was known to be correct "Standard" English. I first found this to be a great shortcoming, but as I grew older, I began to realize the many rewards acquired by having the ability to be literate. During adolescence, I began reading and writing through a fundamental learning program called, "Hooked on Phonics." This program consisted of long hours spent reading short novels and writing ...show more content... Unlike reading, when writing, it is important that grammar, spelling and vocabulary terms are used correctly, therefore restricting me from writing in the way that I would prefer. The most stressed phrase while in high school was, "It is not the content of the essay, but rather the mechanics of grammar and speech that are most prominent." Unfortunately, I have never been one to enjoy the art of writing. In fact, I was recently given a diagnostic test, determining at which level I write and whether or not I should be upgraded to a higher achieving English class. Unfortunately, I did not pass the test with flying colors. This was not due to the fact that I am incapable of writing a good paper, but rather that I am unable to write in a limited amount of time, using the emphasized principles of correct; grammar, vocabulary and spelling. In the reading, Shitty First Drafts, by author Anne Lamott, it is a fact that in order to write a brilliant paper, a first draft must be created. According to Lamott, "The Only way I can get anything written at all is to write really, really shitty first drafts, all writers write them." (94) This is a quote in which I can relate being that in order for me to begin a final draft, I must first have written a first draft, usually one that is in absolute Get more content on HelpWriting.net

I ended up having a meeting with pastor Andrew and his wife to talk about why I have been missing so much and explained how busy I was, so they told me I needed to work on time management skills and how they wanted me to be on their team. I ended up not making it to the next few meetings due to work and cheer. We ended up having another meeting and this time we both came to the conclusion that I needed to be taken off the student leader team since it was not fair for the people that were showing up. Chances are she was introducing you to the basics of reading and writing. Literacy is the ability to read and write, and because I did not think I was very good at either of the two, it had never been my favorite thing to do. It wasn't until my senior year of high school that I had an English class that I actually enjoyed. My teacher was Ms. Holly Eubanks. The past classes had boasted about how good of a teacher Ms. Eubanks was and how, even though she may take a while to grade your papers, she was always trying to help you improve in every possible way she could. • 18. Literacy Narrative Essay example At this point in my life I find myself in an interesting predicament regarding my attitudes toward reading and writing; more so towards reading. Years ago I used to love reading books for pleasure but nowadays I find myself reading things that little to no effort to digest. This includes the very basic posts on facebook expressing one's opinion on something or articles and threads on reddit discussing topics I find intriguing. Perhaps it's the severe senioritis that has overcome me as I enter my last semester at Chapman University. As I've gotten lazier I can see it start to reflect in my everyday life. Deep down I still love to read but I rarely find myself getting truly invested into the action unless it relates to something I am very...show more content... You can feed the mind as much as you want and it will never get full of reading. Sadly, I'm not the same person that I was. I guess you could say it's part of growing up. It never really was intentional but it's just the way how it ended up. On the other hand my attitudes toward writing are very different. First let me say that deep down I truly do not like to write. I myself don't personally like to write for leisure or pleasure but rather I write because I believe it is one of the most important aspects of being able to communicate with those around you, both personally and professionally. To put differently, my attitude towards writing is that I write because I need to write and survive in the world around me. I write because I have to, not because I want to. Hopefully this somewhat makes sense. To better explain let me make a comparison. When I am assigned a writing assignment or I am writing because the action is being forced upon me I find myself not enjoying the process and overall the end result is subpar. The perfect example of this would be my junior year in high school when I was enrolled in AP english literature. I dreaded the majority of the class simply because there was so much writing involved in the entire course and therefore I was constantly writing just to get a grade. Being forced to write in such high volume every week for an entire school year was not enjoyable for myself and as a result the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Overcoming Literacy Narrative My Journey to become Literate I am sitting at my work desk reading an autobiography called the Blood of the Lambs, and I ponder about the amount of time having passed since I have sat down to a nice personal evening with a book. Upon reflection, I realize that the path I took to learning to read wasn't an easy one and involved time, effort, and hard work. As a young child, my memory of reading starts with a troubling period in my life. It started in first grade after I had moved to a new school. For me he year kicked off normally, but the further down the road, I found myself struggling to keep up in my reading class. In addition to falling behind in my classes, I was feeling isolated from the other students. My grades started to suffer and everything got worse. We didn't have a school counselor, so my principal arranged a meeting with my parents to discuss what actions should be taken. My principal told my parents it isn't uncommon for new students to fall behind in classes and that the move could be causing some of the issues. He recommended that I start attending special education for my reading course. My parents thought it over and explained to me that it was ok and not to be discouraged about this. However,...show more content... I couldn't stop and this was enhanced by Hooked on Phonics, which was required in the third grade. We were studying dinosaurs and I was so excited to learn about them, that I read all the books I could get my hands on. As each year passed, my level of reading increased and by the 4th grade I was reading novels and books to my favorite movies. In addition to this, my folks bought me a series of books like 20,000 Leagues under the Sea and Moby Dick. Also, some of my favorite books were Star Wars and Star Trek novels that were new releases at the time. • 20. Literacy Narrative Essay On Baseball Kyle Crifasi Richard English IV, 1B 31 August 2011 Literacy Narrative Typically, people think of reading when they see a novel or a short story, but I think of reading when I'm out on the baseball field. When I hear the word "reading", unlike most people, I think of a green grassy baseball diamond at night, with the lights lighting it up, filled with fans in the stands. Believe it or not, I read all the time on the field. I read the ball coming off the bat when I'm playing in the field. When I hear the "ding" of the metal bat and hard, rubber ball colliding, I know that there is a chance I could make a great play. I can see the ball getting bigger and bigger as in approaches me. I read the ball coming out of the pitcher's hand,...show more content... I always enjoyed reading back then more than I do now. The books that I read now, I'm usually forced to read and they usually aren't interesting to me. To me, reading means many things, not only the reading of text on a page but actions of others and myself as well. Most other people may not say that they will think of baseball games when thinking of how they read in real life, but I view the game of baseball that way and I like to share about how I can read in many different ways in life. Reading books is definitely not one of my favorite hobbies to do, but every once in a while I will find a good book that will catch my interest for the next couple of months. My learning experience from reading on the field has taught me another meaning of literacy that I would not have realized if I had not thought about what reading really meant to me. I can now understand how I use reading in all different aspects of my life better, and not just in the classroom but throughout my everyday activities, like baseball.
