- The coronavirus outbreak originated in Wuhan, China and has spread from the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market. It is capable of human-to-human transmission and has been declared a public health emergency of international concern.
- 41 confirmed cases were treated at Jin Yin Tan Hospital in Wuhan, with 13 patients requiring ICU and 6 deaths. Common symptoms were fever, cough, and fatigue. No effective antiviral treatments have been identified.
- Studies are examining viral transmission and loads, as well as the first cases reported internationally and potential treatments like remdesivir.
4. Patients
59 suspected cases with fever and dry
cough were transferred to a designated
hospital, Jin Yintan Hospital (Wuhan,
China, 41 patients were confirmed to be
infected with 2019-nCoV.
15. Treatment
• Corticosteroids should not be routinely
given systemically, according to WHO
interim guidance.
• No antiviral treatment for coronavirus
infection has been proven to be effective.
• A randomized controlled trial has been
initiated quickly to assess the efficacy
and safety of combined use of
lopinavir/ritonavir (kaletra) in patients
hospitalized with 2019-nCoV infection.
16. Common symptoms at onset of illness were fever (98%),
cough (76%), and myalgia or fatigue (44)
13 (32%) patients admitted to ICU and 6 (15%) died
18. Methods
• In this retrospective, single-centre study, we
included all confirmed cases of 2019-nCoV in
Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital from Jan 1 to Jan 20,
2020.
• Cases were confirmed by real-time RT-PCR.
• Outcomes were followed up until Jan 25, 2020.

• Higher viral loads were detected
soon after symptom onset.
• Higher viral loads detected in the
nose than in the throat.
• Viral load that was detected in the
asymptomatic patient was similar to
that in the symptomatic patients,
which suggests the transmission
potential of asymptomatic or
minimally symptomatic patients
