A woman kept a pocketknife she received as an anniversary gift from her ex-husband after their divorce. When traveling to find her ex-husband Harold after her diagnosis, the TSA confiscated the knife at the airport. Harold and the woman fell in love in the wilderness but had misunderstandings and she left. One year later, she wanted to find Harold. He visited her and later moved in with her to care for her as she became ill, reconciling their relationship.

Ballad of Katherine and Harold - A Love Story
1.
2. They took the knife away from her at the airport Many years ago, they exchanged pocketknives as anniversary gifts. Mom continued to keep the knife in her purse even after the divorce. But TSA took it away. (Idiosyncratic as always, Harold had disappeared.) We were on our way to find Harold after Mom’s diagnosis.
3. They fell in love in the wilderness And brought along her two girls who couldn’t fit into their relationship and the local culture. They embarked on a grand romance. And moved to the mountains of New Mexico.
4. Despite the romance, there were misunderstandings… and sharp words And so, eventually, she left him… And moved to Seattle to be with her children and start a new life.
5. One year later she wanted to find him He flew up to visit her. Five years later and he lives here now. With her. She is ill. And much changed. And he cares for her. They reconciled. Fell in love again. He was hard to find. But we did.
6. Not long ago, Harold told me a story He said when he came up here, to see Mom for the first time in years, he was scared… and angry. And frustrated too, because they took away his pocketknife – the one she gave him - at the airport and he didn’t think he’d get it back. They have each other. … Maybe they don’t need their knives anymore. Which he didn’t.
