Nature’s Most Efficient Flight Mechanism
Not a “Helicopter”…this Rotor Spins Without an Engine
Confidential
Skyworks Gyroplanes – Nature with an Engine
Confidential
 The core of Skyworks’ Gyroplane and Gyrodyne technology is Skyworks’
unparalleled understanding of Sustained Autorotative Flight. Autorotation is
the ability of a free-spinning rotor-wing to generate lift.
4
 For a Gyroplane in forward flight the unpowered rotor creates lift
through autorotation, with forward thrust provided by an engine-driven
propeller(s) or by jet engine(s).
Confidential
 VTOL: The ability of an aircraft to take off and land without a runway.
5
Skyworks’ combination of Sustained Autorotative Flight with
VTOL will Disrupt Today’s Markets.
Confidential
 VTOL: If Airplanes didn’t need Runways…
 Pilots and passengers would be safer
 Emerging Countries wouldn’t be stymied by expensive infrastructure requirements
 Airports could be located in City Centers (to be called “Vertiports)
 A farmer’s field could be a regional distribution hub
 An aviation economy could spring up overnight
 Modern Airports could eliminate runway congestion
 Commuter Airliners could use “Landing Pads” next to their gates
 Landing slots could be allocated only to long-distance flights
 Airports could have more flights, passengers, and revenue every day
 “Too Short” Airports could be cargo and passenger hubs located closer to markets
and become an integral part of our economy
 Emergency Supplies could be delivered next to the Need instead of to the nearest
functioning airport
6
Confidential
 Sustained Autorotative flight: If Helicopters weren’t so complex,
expensive, and difficult to fly…
 Pilots and passengers would be safer
 Owners would pay less to buy, maintain, and operate them
 Law Enforcement agencies would be able to use fewer of them to do the same job
 Air transport companies could run scheduled flights based on their reliability
 Helicopters, if changed to “sustained autorotative flight” aircraft, could be made to fly
faster, farther, and with a higher payload
 People would find more ways to use them
7
Confidential
 VTOL Sustained Autorotative flight AND Hovering: If the Military Had
them…
 Pilots and passengers would be safer
 The U.S. Army’s “Future Vertical Lift” concept would be closer to reality:
 create a new rotorcraft that uses new technology, materials, and designs that are
quicker, have further range, better payload, are more reliable, easier to maintain
and operate, have lower operating costs, and can reduce logistical footprints.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE…
9
 No Transmission to spin the rotor
 No Torque – so no tail rotor or the
connecting equipment
 And much easier to Fly
 MANY Fewer Moving Parts

 No Extra Weight
 Much less complexity
 MUCH SAFER – a rotor in
Autorotation is like a maple seed

SAFETY
Properly designed, Sustained Autorotative Flight Aircraft
are the SAFEST FORM OF POWERED FLIGHT ever copied
from Mother Nature.
 A Rotor in Autorotation is an Aerodynamic Parachute
 Engine Failure: Gyroplanes descend right side up and
controllable to a normal vertical landing with a glide path about
3 times that of a helicopter
 Stalls: Gyroplanes Never Stall – if flown too slowly, they
simply lose altitude right side up and controllable
 Stability: Gyroplanes are “Hands off stable” like airplanes
 Runways: Not needed, gyroplanes can land wherever they fit
 Airplanes:
 Stall and Fall if flown too slowly, the leading cause of
accidents, happening during takeoff and landing
 Runways are required for safe landings

SAFETY
Nature’s Choice
 Helicopters: Shaft-Driven rotor Technology
 Creates torque and complexity which reduces safety:
 More parts: increases risk of mechanical failure
 Higher Levels of Maintenance: increases risk of error
 Torque: harder to fly increases pilot error and mechanical
stress
 Requires a direct connection between rotor and engine:
 Engine Failure: requires highly skilled, immediate, practiced action from the pilot to
achieve Autorotation - (where gyroplanes begin)
 Uses a rotor design not maximized for autorotation:
 Glide path: significantly shorter than gyroplane
 Higher Rate of descent: less time for helicopter pilot to make emergency decisions
Helicopter technology is more efficient at hovering, but hovering is
not necessary to move people and cargo between locations.
Confidential
 Design Simplicity – Much less complicated than helicopters
 Reliability – Far fewer moving parts means fewer problems
 Mission Readiness – Far less maintenance required to remain airworthy,
so nearly always available
 Profitability – The pocketbook benefits of simplicity:
 Lower Acquisition,
 Maintenance, and
 Operational costs
 Combined = Much Higher Profitability

Winter Olympics – the only rotorcraft that remained available and
airworthy 24/7 for the mission.

 Not constrained by the physics-imposed speed,
range, and payload limitations of a helicopter.
 Gyroplanes offer substantial performance advantages:
 Higher speed,
 Greater range,
 Greater payloads, and
 Higher payload efficiencies.
 Allows VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing):
 Mechanical Prerotation of the Rotor in Hawk Series
 Hover-Power Tip Jets with Burners for the Heliplane
 Cold Air Tip Jet Prerotation for the GyroLiner

An Airplane that Doesn’t need an Runway
Confidential
 GyroLiners: Airplanes that don’t need a Runway
 Only the rotor system - rotor blades, head, and controls – is shared with Helicopters.
 In all other respects - wings, tail, ailerons, elevator, rudders, and main engines used
for forward thrust (propellers or turbofan), GyroLiners are an airplane.
 VTOL is provided through prerotation of the rotor using compressed air tip jets.
 GyroLiners: Airliner cargo and passenger capacity
 Safely,
 At high speeds (240 mph),
 With close to airliner costs,
 WITHOUT A RUNWAY.

 Cargo Variants in similar sizes to the passenger versions
 Performance
 350 mi Range with Reserve
 240 mph (378 kph) Cruise
 1.5 hrs to fly 350 miles
 Operations
 Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) by design,
 Ultra-Short Takeoff and Landing (U-STOL) for heavy loads or high altitude, both
permitting “runway independent” operations
 Pressurized Comfort with All Weather Reliability (flight into known icing conditions)
 Safe, Low-cost, Low Maintenance, and Reliable
 High Mission Readiness

A Gyroplane That Can Hover
Confidential
 Selected by the US Department of Defense to:
 Lead development of the DARPA Heliplane
 Phase 1 successfully completed with all program goals having been met
 400 mph VTOL gyrodyne
 1,000 nm range & 1,000 lb payload
 HOGE (Hover Out of Ground Effect at Max Gross Weight) at 4,000 ft and
95°(density altitude of ~7,800 ft)
 Patented and proprietary advanced technology for Gyroplanes and
Gyrodynes:
 More than 30 patents issued (or approved for issue) of a total of more than 60 either
issued, under application, or pending.
 The work on DARPA Heliplane generated many patents of advanced technology that
can be used throughout Skyworks’ aircraft designs.
2020
Confidential
 The Heliplane is a Gyroplane that can Hover
 Hovering requires more power than the “jump takeoffs” used for VTOL
 Skyworks Gyroplanes can achieve VTOL with about 10-20% of Hovering power
 The Hawk series use a mechanical gearing system to spin the shaft while on
the ground but never in the air
 GyroLiners use compressed air tip jets for prerotation – tip jets can be used to
improve flight characteristics because no torque is generated
 Addition of fuel-powered tip jets allows the Heliplane to emulate the hovering ability of
Helicopters while maintaining the natural advantages of Gyroplanes – safety, speed,
simplicity, range, cost
 Helicopters designed to overcome the Torque Handicap are extremely
complex and costly

 A White Paper by Dr. Daniel P. Schrage, Dir. Of Vertical Lift Research
Center of Excellence at Georgia Tech, June 2015:
 “ Sustained autorotative flight uses autorotation throughout its flight envelope, which
gives several advantages over powered rotor flight.”
 “…[Skyworks] has been aggressively patenting reaction drive rotor system and related
technologies over the past several years. This should be attractive to a risk sharing
partner as many patents have been issued over the last two years.”
 “The Heliplane Gyrodyne Demonstrator Aircraft (HGDA) goals combined vertical
takeoff capability with a maximum speed of 400 mph (347 kts) at 20-30,000 ft altitude.”

 The benefits of Autorotative flight
flow directly into the cost of doing
business.
 Payload efficiency - lower non-
payload weight
 Simplicity – fewer moving parts
 Easier to operate – lower pilot cost
 Safety – lower insurance premiums
 Cheaper to buy – less depreciation
 Estimates assume the same number
of hours for each aircraft
 But reliability and mission
readiness also favor gyroplanes

  • 10. Confidential 1010 SAFETY Properly designed, Sustained Autorotative Flight Aircraft are the SAFEST FORM OF POWERED FLIGHT ever copied from Mother Nature.  A Rotor in Autorotation is an Aerodynamic Parachute  Engine Failure: Gyroplanes descend right side up and controllable to a normal vertical landing with a glide path about 3 times that of a helicopter  Stalls: Gyroplanes Never Stall – if flown too slowly, they simply lose altitude right side up and controllable  Stability: Gyroplanes are “Hands off stable” like airplanes  Runways: Not needed, gyroplanes can land wherever they fit  Airplanes:  Stall and Fall if flown too slowly, the leading cause of accidents, happening during takeoff and landing  Runways are required for safe landings Nature’s Gyroplane Twirling Maple seed – 2 revolutions
  • 11. Confidential 1111 SAFETY Nature’s Choice  Helicopters: Shaft-Driven rotor Technology  Creates torque and complexity which reduces safety:  More parts: increases risk of mechanical failure  Higher Levels of Maintenance: increases risk of error  Torque: harder to fly increases pilot error and mechanical stress  Requires a direct connection between rotor and engine:  Engine Failure: requires highly skilled, immediate, practiced action from the pilot to achieve Autorotation - (where gyroplanes begin)  Uses a rotor design not maximized for autorotation:  Glide path: significantly shorter than gyroplane  Higher Rate of descent: less time for helicopter pilot to make emergency decisions Helicopter technology is more efficient at hovering, but hovering is not necessary to move people and cargo between locations.
  • 12. • 21. Confidential  The Heliplane is a Gyroplane that can Hover  Hovering requires more power than the “jump takeoffs” used for VTOL  Skyworks Gyroplanes can achieve VTOL with about 10-20% of Hovering power  The Hawk series use a mechanical gearing system to spin the shaft while on the ground but never in the air  GyroLiners use compressed air tip jets for prerotation – tip jets can be used to improve flight characteristics because no torque is generated  Addition of fuel-powered tip jets allows the Heliplane to emulate the hovering ability of Helicopters while maintaining the natural advantages of Gyroplanes – safety, speed, simplicity, range, cost  Helicopters designed to overcome the Torque Handicap are extremely complex and costly 2121 Tiltrotor Coaxial–Compound Helicopter
