Making the complex clear, turning difficult into intriguing, raising intellectual curiosity, supporting creative problem solving, posing authentic challenges, building effective scaffolds – contemporary e-learning goes beyond the latest tools and technologies. The special interest group “Designing, Developing, and Assessing E-Learning” aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to debate and collaborate on a variety of instructional design themes.
The SIG will promote activities for future E-Learn conferences, including suggestions for invited speakers and symposia. It provides a marketplace for joint research projects and offers publications opportunities in form of special issues and edited volumes.

6. Assessment & E-Learning
• Needs Assessment: Gather data to reach the audience
effectively and design user-friendly interfaces (e.g., focus
groups, surveys, interviews, personas, scenarios)
• Impact Assessment: Understand how learners access
online material or move through the curriculum and
improve their experience (e.g., Web analytics, social
media metrics, learning analytics, surveys, interviews)
• Classroom Assessment: Implement assessment
techniques that support students’ critical thinking
abilities and transfer learning skills(e.g., peer-to-peer
assessment, rubrics, portfolios, problem-based learning).

Editor's Notes
Assessment plays a vital role in delivering, evaluating and improving learning experiences in online and face-to-face settings. I envision the SIG is a place to compare notes on the conceptual development, implementation and data analysis for various assessment approaches.
