May 2011
Greetings!
As I return from the 2011 STC Summit in Sacramento, I'm energized and
excited about what's happening with the STC. For those who couldn't
make it, we will be sharing the biggest news and stories from the
conference that STC members should know at our upcoming June 15
chapter meeting. Highlights include: added member benefits, 'My STC'
website, certification (yes, it's happening), session highlights (i.e., 'the Tie
Line'). We will also be recognizing our most active volunteers and giving
out prizes! (So register now!)
Meanwhile, the chapter is accepting votes for our elected chapter
executive positions (President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary). I
strongly encourage all members to exercise their right to nominate
candidates and vote for the future leaders of the STC Philadelphia Metro
Chapter. The ballot is a simple quick web form and should only take 2
minutes to complete. Vote now!
We'll be planning upcoming chapter events and services very soon, so
please send us your suggestions. Cheers!

2. April Meeting
Those who attended the April 13 STC-PMC chapter meeting were treated to another insightful
presentation by Nad Rosenberg, one of our most esteemed members (Associate
Fellow) and ongoing contributors. Nad spoke about the principles of
creating or selecting visuals that make presentations and tutorials more
engaging and easier to understand. She discussed important principles that
her company has learned when working with visuals, including the use of
color, human images, appropriate animation, and a solid graphical layout.
Finally, to bring all of these important topics together, she then showed the
audience numerous examples and provided helpful suggestions for choosing
effective visuals. Thanks, Nad.

Active Member Achievement Awards
It was another year of important chapter highlights and accomplishments.
Have we mentioned that we've been recognized and awarded Chapter of
Excellence? And received a Pacesetter Award at the 2011 Summit? (It's
true!). None of this would be possible without the help and participation of
our most active volunteers. It is through their efforts and work that we're
able to provide the programs and services that our members value. Yes,
awards are nice too.
Speaking of awards, it is the privilege of the chapter to be able to provide an
Active Member award to chapter members who have demonstrated
exceptional service or participation. During the course of the year, members
earn points for volunteering, presenting, attending events, or holding a
leadership position. When the number of points reaches a preset level, that
member automatically earns a custom STC-PMC silk-screened cotton polo
shirt - suitable for wearing to work or a chapter event (hint, hint).
Congratulations to the following members, who have been recognized as an
Active Member this year and will receive their shirts at the June 15 chapter
meeting: Todd DeLuca, Marianne Johnston, Steve Lungren, Jacqueline
Caddle, Jessica Rineer, Lori Corbett, Barrie Byron, Melanie Kuchma,
Timothy Esposito, Steve Adler, Donn DeBoard, Lois Harwood, Gary
Sternberg.
Note: We're looking for ways to improve the Active Member
program in the coming year, including how to recognize more
volunteers and a possible scaled program with different award
levels - plus other possible prizes. If you have ideas or
suggestions on how we can recognize and encourage more
participation, please contact our Membership chair.
