ANC (Antenatal check-ups )
Systemic supervision (examination and advice) of a women
during pregnancy is called ANC.
 Antenatal care is the systemic supervision of women during pregnancy
to monitor the progress of foetal growth and to ascertain the well-being
of the mother and the foetus. A proper antenatal check-up provides
necessary care to the mother and helps identify any complications of
pregnancy such as anaemia , pre-eclampsia and hypertension etc. in
the mother and slow/inadequate growth of the foetus . Antenatal care
allows for the timely management of complications through referral to
an appropriate facility for further treatment. It also provides opportunity
to prepare a birth plan and identify the facility for delivery and referral
in case of complications.

AIMS
 To screen the high risk cases.
 To prevent or to detect and treat at the earliest any complications.
 To ensure continued risk assessment and to provide ongoing primary preventive health care.
 To educate the mother about the physiology of pregnancy and labour by demonstration, charts
and diagrams so that fear is removed and psychology is improved.
O To discuss the couple about the place, time and mode of delivery, provisionally and care of the
newborn.
O To motivate the couple about the need of family planning and also appropriate advice to couple
seeking medical termination of pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE

o ensure a normal pregnancy with delivery of a healthy baby
from a healthy mother.
The benefits of vaginal/normal delivery include:
•Avoids risks associated with instruments used for a c-section
delivery.
•Lower risk of infection for mother and child
•Quicker recovery for mother and shorter hospital stay (24-48 hours
as compared to 3 days to a week post caesarean)
•The natural bacteria and microbes of the vagina transferred from
mother to child boost the baby’s immune system, readying it for life
outside the protected womb.
•Babies are at lower risk for respiratory problems since the labour
contractions help prepare the baby’s lungs for breathing
•Normal delivery stimulates lactation because the birthing process
activates numerous natural mothering hormones.

DESCRIBTION OF USE
O measure your height and weight, and calculate your body mass index (BMI) measure your
blood pressure and test your urine for protein.
1. Timing of the first visit/registration - The first visit or registration of a pregnant woman for ANC
should take place as soon as the pregnancy is suspected.
2. Second visit - Between 14 and 26 weeks.
3. Third visit - Between 28 and 34 weeks.
4. Fourth visit - Between 36 weeks and term.
