ContemporaryPsychology
 Psychology’s Perspectives
 A lot depends on your viewpoint
 Eclectic means that you use several of the theories
to describe behavior.
19
Aim: How is psychology viewed from different perspectives?
Focuses on Darwinism.
We behave the way we
do because we inherited
those behaviors.
Thus, those behaviors
must have helped ensure
our ancestors survival.
Aim: How is psychology viewed from different perspectives?
Also called
Psychoanalytic.
Study of unconscious
motives and conflicts
that determine behavior.
Unconscious are motives
that you are not aware
of. Conscious are motives
that you are aware of.

CognitiveApproach
21
Cognitive Psychologists return
to the study of learning,
memory, perception, language,
development & problem solving Example:
Is your boyfriend dumping you traumatic or do
you just think it is therefore you are depressed?
Or..your ability to do math compared to a 5 year
old. You can understand abstract thinking that
goes along with statistics.
Cognition is the mental
processes
involved in acquiring,
processing,
storing & using information
Aim: How is psychology viewed from different perspectives?
Worked in France
administering Binet’s IQ
test.
Children do not think like
adults. Why?
Created 4 stages of
cognitive ability that
accurately explain the
behavior of children.
Influenced teachers and
school system.
Jean Piaget
Biological Approach
22
Focus
How the body and brain create
emotions, memories,
and sensory experiences.
Sample Issues
• Depression and antidepressants. Problems with
thyroids.
• How are messages transmitted within the body?
• How is blood chemistry linked with moods and
motives?
Aim: How is psychology viewed from different perspectives?

Behavioral Approach
23
Scientific Psychology
should focus on
observable behavior.
John Watson
(1878-1958)
Ivan Pavlov
B.F. Skinner
Organisms tend to repeat responses that lead to
positive outcomes & they tend not to repeat responses
that lead to neutral or negative outcomes.
Aim: How is psychology viewed from different perspectives?
Social-CulturalApproach HumanisticApproach
24
Focus
How behavior and thinking vary
across situations
and cultures.
Sample Issues
• How are we, as members of different
races and
nationalities, alike as members of
one human family?
• How do we differ, as products of
different social contexts?
• Why do people sometimes act
differently in groups than
when alone?
Aim: How is psychology viewed from different perspectives?
Youhavethe potentialto begreat.
SelfActualization.
FeelGoodapproach.
ClientCenteredTherapy
Hierarchyof needs.
Carl Rogers believed in “client
centered therapy”
Abraham Maslow came up
with the Hierarchy of needs
Classify each of the following examples as representing
either the Biological, Behaviorist, Cognitive, Socio-
cultural, Psychodynamic, or Humanistic approaches to
psychology. Be sure to explain why?
Aim: How is psychology viewed from different perspectives?
Why do many psychologists have an eclectic
view of psychology?

Aim: How is psychology viewed from different perspectives?
After his radioactive accident, the Hulk no longer
feels safe and secure because he is in fear of
becoming the hulk and harming others.
This affects the other stages of Maslow’s hierarchy
because he does not belong anywhere and cannot
love others, due to the fact that he may harm them
Treatment: client centered therapy to allow for the
Hulk to talk freely about his insecurities. This would
allow for the Hulk to take control and not feel
judged by his therapist.
Aim: How is psychology viewed from different perspectives?
tumblr_m41cmraCxR1qdj7w9
Problem: The hulk is constantly suffering from explosions of anger.
Aim: How is psychology viewed from different perspectives?
You will have 7 minutes to work with your
expert group to evaluate the issues that the
Hulk faces through the perspective that you
have been assigned and decide what you and
your group members believe to be the best
treatment.
You will now have 15 minutes to teach your
group members about the perspective you have
become an expert on.
Make sure that you are taking down
notes/information as your group members
speak
