Types of Technology
• Computers * Blue tooth
• Television * GPS
• Cell Phones * Domes
• Cameras * PVR
• Video Games
• Social Media
1. Technology has provided
easier forms of
communication (family over
seas, friends far away)
2. The medical field is
becoming more advance
finding new cures and
treatments.
3. It makes our everyday
tasks easier and faster
1. PEOPLE DEPEND TO MUCH
ON TECHNOLOGY THEY ARE
UNABLE TO THINK FOR
THEMSELVES.
2. TECHNOLOGY CAN CREATE
FATIGUE, STRESS (MENTAL
AND EMOTIONAL)
DEPRESSION
3. TECHNOLOGY CREATES A
NEW FORM OF BULLYING.
MEDIA PROMOTES
NEGATIVE BODY IMAGES
Pros and Cons
History
 1960: Social interaction was
considered an art form
 We use to communicate with trunk
calls, letters, telephonic
communication and land lines.
 New discoveries took years of creating
and planning.
 Those who were owned technology
(car, phone, radio) was considered
wealthy
 2015: Social interaction is developed
at home.
 We rely on cell phones, lap tops, social
media, and advanced televisions.
 Technology is being recreated and
improved constantly
 Everyone now a days owns a cell
phone, computer ect. They are not
considered a want, but more of a
need.
Definitions :
Technology :
The application of science,
especially to industrial or commercial
objects. Electronic or digital products
and systems considered as a group
ISOLATION:
(SOCIOLOGY)A LACK OF
CONNECTION BETWEEN
PERSONS, GROUPS, OR WHOLE
SOCIETY.
(PSYCHOLOGY) THE FAILURE
OF AN INDIVIDUAL TO
MAINTAIN CONTACT OF
COMMUNICATION WHERE
INTERACTION WITH OTHERS
PERSISTS.
NEUROSIS:
A PSYCHOLOGICAL STATE
CHARACTERIZED BY EXCESSIVE
ANXIETY OR INSECURITY,
COMPENSATED FOR BY
VARIOUS DEFENSE
MECHANISMS AND LACKING
EVIDENCE OF ORGANIC
DISEASE.
Cell Phones
Social media
Smartphones are now a multi-
media device that not only gives
people access to texting and
calling but now we have
connection to Facebook, twitter,
and other social medias
anywhere, anytime.
Texting
Cellphones allow people to
ignore the human aspect of
contact that has always been
central to the functioning of
society, and instead rely upon
simple phrases and emoticons as
an attempt to relay emotions that
could be far better expressed in
the inflection of one’s voice
(Technology imposes social
isolation).
Shaping society
These advance cell phones now
play a huge role in influencing
and shaping our psychological
and physical being.
We are so accustomed to relying
on a hand held device to
function day to day.
Personal
Interaction
The more technology improves it
creates a disconnection between
people, weather it is family, friends, or
relationships.
And now we're living in a world where
hours spent on Facebook in the U.S.
went up 700% between 2008 and
2009. Where 30 percent of people in
the U.S. used social media in 2008,
and 73% do today. Where 50 percent
of worldwide internet users are
plugged in to social media, and an
expected 71 percent will be by next
year. We're living behind this mask
more and more. (White, T., 2015)
Time spent with family and friends, are
now spent sitting beside one another
checking and updating statuses.
Computers
Cyber bullying
* We need to try to determine
when we see a teen isolating
himself what is going on in his
world. Becoming socially isolated
may be a response to several
stresses: bullying, abuse,
depression, social anxiety,
substance abuse, family conflict,
or peer conflict (Parenting with All
the Pieces). The more people are
open to internet and social media
the more cyber bullying is
becoming open to everyone in
the cyber world.
Jobs
* Applying for jobs now a days is
all online, we have lost that sense
of communicating with one
another, and getting a firm
understanding of one personality
and ability.
* The study found that 28% of
heavy Internet users report
spending more time working at
home (12% out of these 28% even
reported spending more time at
the office as well).
Digital Divide
* "By far the most important factors
facilitating or inhibiting Internet
access are education and age, and
not income - nor race/ethnicity or
gender, each of which account for
less than 5 percent change in rates
of access and are statistically
insignificant.” (Nielsen Norman
Group)
* When splitting out the effect of the
various variables, the study finds the
following three main effects on
Internet access:
Education (having a college
degree): +49%
Age (older people compared with
18-25 years' olds): -43%
Income (having high income): +21%
Is internet use
leading to less face-
to-face contact with
our closest social ties
or with local social
ties?
In-person contact remains the
dominant means of
communication with core
network members. On
average, there is face-to-
face contact with each tie on
210 out of 365 days per year ,
however, it is decreasing
rapidly as social media is
increasing (Social Isolation
and New Technology, 2009).
Television
Time
We all have our favorite shows
that we can’t miss. We are willing
to stop whatever we are doing to
turn on the television and watch.
Even in our busiest of days we
always fine the time to watch t.v.
We are living in a world now
where we can’t just let lose,
because we are always forcing on
time and when we will get our
next fix of technology.
Life Expectations
There is standards that is placed upon
society because people can’t seam to
escape the cyber world, they compare
what happens in t.v to what life is like,
setting themselves up for
disappointment, in the fallowing ways:
social compensation, which included
companionship, pass time, habit, and
escape motivations, as well as mood
management, which included relaxation,
entertainment, arousal, and information
motivations.
Health
Our society’s spends more time on
devoted to technology than we do our
health. Somehow we lost our way on
fitness and health conscious because we
are dictating our time to food and
technology. As mentioned before, we
have extra time to sit and watch
television all night, before school, and
when we have a hour down time,
however we can’t find 30 minutes to
exercise. As technology advances, we are
becoming a lazier generation.
Addiction:
DR. JERALD BLOCK, AUTHOR
FORM THE AMERICAN
JOURNAL OF PSYCHIATRY,
SAYS INTERNET ADDICTION
CAN NOW BE IDENTIFIED AS
CAUSING “COMPULSIVE-
IMPULSIVE DISORDER, SUCH AS
CHECKING E-MAILS
CONSTANTLY OR ALWAYS
THINKING THE PHONE IS
VIBRATING” (INTERNET
ADDICTION DISORDER, 2015)
6 Signs we Depend on
Technology to Much
1. If the internet is down, we are finished
working for the day. Weather it is in
the office, school, or homework.
2. Buyer’s remorse is much more
common. Online shopping is harder to
return than in the mall.
3. People no longer live in the moment.
If our battery dies we stop and look
for a charger, me must take pictures
to document time.
4. Nobody know one another's phone
number, we use speed dial.
5. To avoid face-to-face confrontation
we now use cellphones or computers
6. Without our cell phones we feel
naked, If we don’t have our phones
with us we are not able to function.
A video of how far society has come
Conclusion
“Don’t waste your life getting
caught in the net, cause when
the end comes there is nothing
worst than regret” (Look Up
Video). The more we spend time
focusing on how many followers
we have on Facebook, or the
latest trends on t.v the more likely
we will see our life's go by and
feel we have accomplished
nothing. Yes, technology has
improved the way we life, but it
doesn’t need to control it.

Technology creates social isolation

  • 1. Technology Creates Social Isolation and Neurosis STEPHANIE STONE 200234214
  • 2. Types of Technology • Computers * Blue tooth • Television * GPS • Cell Phones * Domes • Cameras * PVR • Video Games • Social Media
  • 3. 1. Technology has provided easier forms of communication (family over seas, friends far away) 2. The medical field is becoming more advance finding new cures and treatments. 3. It makes our everyday tasks easier and faster 1. PEOPLE DEPEND TO MUCH ON TECHNOLOGY THEY ARE UNABLE TO THINK FOR THEMSELVES. 2. TECHNOLOGY CAN CREATE FATIGUE, STRESS (MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL) DEPRESSION 3. TECHNOLOGY CREATES A NEW FORM OF BULLYING. MEDIA PROMOTES NEGATIVE BODY IMAGES Pros and Cons
  • 4. History  1960: Social interaction was considered an art form  We use to communicate with trunk calls, letters, telephonic communication and land lines.  New discoveries took years of creating and planning.  Those who were owned technology (car, phone, radio) was considered wealthy  2015: Social interaction is developed at home.  We rely on cell phones, lap tops, social media, and advanced televisions.  Technology is being recreated and improved constantly  Everyone now a days owns a cell phone, computer ect. They are not considered a want, but more of a need.
  • 5. Definitions : Technology : The application of science, especially to industrial or commercial objects. Electronic or digital products and systems considered as a group ISOLATION: (SOCIOLOGY)A LACK OF CONNECTION BETWEEN PERSONS, GROUPS, OR WHOLE SOCIETY. (PSYCHOLOGY) THE FAILURE OF AN INDIVIDUAL TO MAINTAIN CONTACT OF COMMUNICATION WHERE INTERACTION WITH OTHERS PERSISTS. NEUROSIS: A PSYCHOLOGICAL STATE CHARACTERIZED BY EXCESSIVE ANXIETY OR INSECURITY, COMPENSATED FOR BY VARIOUS DEFENSE MECHANISMS AND LACKING EVIDENCE OF ORGANIC DISEASE.
  • 6. Cell Phones Social media Smartphones are now a multi- media device that not only gives people access to texting and calling but now we have connection to Facebook, twitter, and other social medias anywhere, anytime. Texting Cellphones allow people to ignore the human aspect of contact that has always been central to the functioning of society, and instead rely upon simple phrases and emoticons as an attempt to relay emotions that could be far better expressed in the inflection of one’s voice (Technology imposes social isolation). Shaping society These advance cell phones now play a huge role in influencing and shaping our psychological and physical being. We are so accustomed to relying on a hand held device to function day to day.
  • 7. Personal Interaction The more technology improves it creates a disconnection between people, weather it is family, friends, or relationships. And now we're living in a world where hours spent on Facebook in the U.S. went up 700% between 2008 and 2009. Where 30 percent of people in the U.S. used social media in 2008, and 73% do today. Where 50 percent of worldwide internet users are plugged in to social media, and an expected 71 percent will be by next year. We're living behind this mask more and more. (White, T., 2015) Time spent with family and friends, are now spent sitting beside one another checking and updating statuses.
  • 8. Computers Cyber bullying * We need to try to determine when we see a teen isolating himself what is going on in his world. Becoming socially isolated may be a response to several stresses: bullying, abuse, depression, social anxiety, substance abuse, family conflict, or peer conflict (Parenting with All the Pieces). The more people are open to internet and social media the more cyber bullying is becoming open to everyone in the cyber world. Jobs * Applying for jobs now a days is all online, we have lost that sense of communicating with one another, and getting a firm understanding of one personality and ability. * The study found that 28% of heavy Internet users report spending more time working at home (12% out of these 28% even reported spending more time at the office as well). Digital Divide * "By far the most important factors facilitating or inhibiting Internet access are education and age, and not income - nor race/ethnicity or gender, each of which account for less than 5 percent change in rates of access and are statistically insignificant.” (Nielsen Norman Group) * When splitting out the effect of the various variables, the study finds the following three main effects on Internet access: Education (having a college degree): +49% Age (older people compared with 18-25 years' olds): -43% Income (having high income): +21%
  • 9. Is internet use leading to less face- to-face contact with our closest social ties or with local social ties? In-person contact remains the dominant means of communication with core network members. On average, there is face-to- face contact with each tie on 210 out of 365 days per year , however, it is decreasing rapidly as social media is increasing (Social Isolation and New Technology, 2009).
  • 10. Television Time We all have our favorite shows that we can’t miss. We are willing to stop whatever we are doing to turn on the television and watch. Even in our busiest of days we always fine the time to watch t.v. We are living in a world now where we can’t just let lose, because we are always forcing on time and when we will get our next fix of technology. Life Expectations There is standards that is placed upon society because people can’t seam to escape the cyber world, they compare what happens in t.v to what life is like, setting themselves up for disappointment, in the fallowing ways: social compensation, which included companionship, pass time, habit, and escape motivations, as well as mood management, which included relaxation, entertainment, arousal, and information motivations. Health Our society’s spends more time on devoted to technology than we do our health. Somehow we lost our way on fitness and health conscious because we are dictating our time to food and technology. As mentioned before, we have extra time to sit and watch television all night, before school, and when we have a hour down time, however we can’t find 30 minutes to exercise. As technology advances, we are becoming a lazier generation.
  • 11. Addiction: DR. JERALD BLOCK, AUTHOR FORM THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PSYCHIATRY, SAYS INTERNET ADDICTION CAN NOW BE IDENTIFIED AS CAUSING “COMPULSIVE- IMPULSIVE DISORDER, SUCH AS CHECKING E-MAILS CONSTANTLY OR ALWAYS THINKING THE PHONE IS VIBRATING” (INTERNET ADDICTION DISORDER, 2015)
  • 12. 6 Signs we Depend on Technology to Much 1. If the internet is down, we are finished working for the day. Weather it is in the office, school, or homework. 2. Buyer’s remorse is much more common. Online shopping is harder to return than in the mall. 3. People no longer live in the moment. If our battery dies we stop and look for a charger, me must take pictures to document time. 4. Nobody know one another's phone number, we use speed dial. 5. To avoid face-to-face confrontation we now use cellphones or computers 6. Without our cell phones we feel naked, If we don’t have our phones with us we are not able to function.
  • 13. A video of how far society has come
  • 14. Conclusion “Don’t waste your life getting caught in the net, cause when the end comes there is nothing worst than regret” (Look Up Video). The more we spend time focusing on how many followers we have on Facebook, or the latest trends on t.v the more likely we will see our life's go by and feel we have accomplished nothing. Yes, technology has improved the way we life, but it doesn’t need to control it.
