1. Dear Parents,
The first grade students will be participating in a class blog this year. I am hoping that you will give your
permission for your child to participate. You might have the following questions:
What is a blog? A blog is like a journal and it is done on the internet. In our class, students will write
about information they have learned through our academic units.
Is a blog safe? We will be using Kidblog. With Kidblog, teachers have complete control over student
blogs and accounts. Kidblog is secure. Blogging is not a social network like Facebook. Students must
know the private code in order to access it.You can check the website at www.kidblog.org . I will also be
teaching lessons on how to stay safe on the internet and during blogging.
What will the students blog about? The students will write about what they are learning in class. I will
respond back to their writing. Later in the year, I will teach the students how to write back to their
classmates. They will learn how to make appropriate comments on a blog.
Who will see my child’s blog? No one outside the class can see what your child has written.
Can I see my child’s blog? Yes, but you will have to come into the classroom and ask to see it. I will be
happy to show your child’s blog to you at any time. I will enter the classroom code and your child’s code.
I am the only person who has the classroom code. Your child will have his or her own personal code. You
will only see your own child’s blog.
Why are we blogging?Last year, all students participated and it was a great learning experience.
Blogging helps students become better writers. At first, your child may only be able to blog a few words,
but with practice, they will blog sentences.
What Core Curriculum standards does blogging address? As a 21st
century learner, your child needs to
learn to use digital tools to write. Blogging fulfills this standard. Below are other standards that blogging
fulfills.
1.W.5 – With guidance and support from adults, focus on a topic, respond to questions and suggestions
from peers, and add details to strengthen writing as needed.
1.W.6 – With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish
writing, including in collaboration with peers.
1.L.1 – Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing
or speaking.
1.L.2 – Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and
spelling when writing.
Does my child have to blog? No, but I hope you will choose to let your child participate. If you have
other questions or concerns, I will be happy to talk to you.
