2. Why Clean Diesel
Diesel engines are the workhorses of the nation;
although many diesel engines already have some
form of emission controls, the legacy fleet still in use
continue to emit large amounts of nitrogen oxides,
particulate matter and air toxics
These emissions are linked to premature deaths,
asthma attacks, lost work days, and other health
impacts every year

3. Who is Eligible to Apply for DieselWise
Indiana Grants
Public diesel fleets
• Examples include state, county, city, municipal, school,
quasigovernmental fleets
Private diesel fleets that serve a public need
• Examples include single vehicle owner operators, large onroad fleets,
mining industry, marine equipment, locomotives, construction
equipment
Public-Private partnerships focused on alternative fuels
• Examples include a private alternative fuel infrastructure company
along with a public need serving fleet partner

U.S. EPA and/or CARB Verified Retrofit Technologies
• Examples include diesel oxidation catalysts, diesel particulate filters,
closed crank case ventilation systems
U.S. EPA and/or CARB Verified Idle Reduction Technologies
• Examples include auxiliary power units, fuel operated heaters, battery
air conditioning systems, thermal storage systems

Public-Private alternative fuel infrastructure/fleet partnerships
• Examples include compressed natural gas or liquefied natural gas
dispensing facilities when partnered with committed public need
serving fleet partner

Projects may include, but are not limited to:
• Buses;
• Medium-duty or heavy-duty trucks;
• Marine Engines;
• Locomotives; and
• Nonroad engines, equipment or vehicles used in:
– Construction, cargo handling (including at a port or airport),
agriculture, mining or energy production (including stationary
generators and pumps)
• Alternative Fuel Infrastructure

Verified Retrofit Technology
• Exhaust Controls - up to 100% of the cost
o Diesel Oxidation Catalysts, Diesel Particulate Filters, etc.
• Engine Upgrades – up to 75% of the cost

8. Verified Idle Reduction Technologies
• Idle Reduction Technology – up to 75% of the cost
o Example: Auxiliary Power Unit on a truck - up to 75%
• Idle Reduction Technology AND exhaust control
o Up to 100% of the cost
o Example: Auxiliary Power Unit AND Diesel Particulate Filter on a
truck – up to 100% of both technologies
APUs are only eligible on long haul Class 8 vehicles with
2006 or older engine configurations

9. Verified Aerodynamic Technologies (Aero) and Low
Rolling Resistance Tires (Tires)
• Aero and/or Tires AND Verified Idle Reduction Technology
– up to 75% of the cost
• Aero and/or Tires AND Verified Exhaust Control
Technology – up to 100% of the cost
• Aero and/or Tires AND Verified Idle Reduction AND
Verified Exhaust Control – up to 100% of the cost

10. Certified Engine Repowers
• Up to 75% of the cost
• Repowers must include a complete engine and emission
control system to the design specifications of the certified
engine configuration
• Associated hardware
Replaced engine must be scrapped or remanufactured to
next EPA Standard (Tier 0 to Tier 1, for example)

11. Vehicle and Equipment Replacements
• For Drayage Vehicles – up to 50% of the cost
• 2007 or newer model year certified engine
• Must meet operational guidelines and definition of drayage
truck, as stated in RFP (Section I.D.2.e.iv)
• For All Other Vehicles – up to 50% of the cost
o 2010 or newer model year certified engine
Replaced vehicle or equipment must be scrapped or engine
remanufactured to the next EPA Standard

12. Public-Private alternative fuel infrastructure/fleet
partnerships
• Labor and equipment for eligible public or public-private
CNG or LNG infrastructure projects – up to 75% of the cost
• Private alternative fuel infrastructure projects can be
deemed eligible with a public need demonstration
• Public need fleets must demonstrate existing or future
commitment to support adequate fuel volume of
infrastructure

13. What is the Review, Selection and
Implementation Process
1. Submit proposals to DieselWise Indiana via email or hard
copy
2. Reviewed by technical staff and given numerical score
and then rank-ordered
3. Funding recommendations finalized based on score, rank
and other factors
4. Grant Agreement developed and executed by all parties
5. Upon full execution of Grant Agreement, project can
move forward

14. What are the Evaluation Criteria
Criteria Points
Project’s total emission reduction potential (based on type of project and/or the use of vehicle). 25
Level of commitment from the equipment owner/operator. This includes the willingness of the
owner/operator to provide a financial match to leverage grant funds and/or provide an in-kind
match, as well as a documented commitment to ensure project goals are met.

Proximity to sensitive populations such as daycare facilities, schools, nursing homes, and
residential areas.

Term remaining of useful vehicle life. 15
Reduction in fuel and oil consumption and other fluid or solid wastes from idling diesel
engines.

Willingness to establish and enforce an Idle Restriction and Use Policy to maximize the use of
onroad or nonroad idle reduction technologies and exhaust retrofit technologies.
