  2. The topic I chose to do my project on is Nursing. The nursing field has many different degrees and job opportunities. Nursing jobs are always needed throughout the country.\n\n
  3. I have wanted to become a nurse for a couple of years. I go to Central Montco Technical High School to learn the basic things about nursing. I have my CNA CPR/AED license and I work at Regina Nursing Home in Norristown.\n
  4. Nurses examine and monitor patients to determine what a patients needs to be healthy and to live. Nurses provide care for patients and often have other health care providers to help them. One of the most important roles of a nurse is to be a patient advocate. Nurses protect the interests of patients when the patient cannot because of illness. Nurses are also responsible for explaining procedures and treatment. Nurses guides patients toward healthy behaviors and support them in time of need. Nurses provide physical care only when patients cannot do so for themselves. Nurses provide dignity in death by helping the patient to spend time with the family members in their final days. Hospital nurses are responsible for discharging, planning and helping patients adapt to their conditions and work toward a full recovery.\n
  5. Education and training requirements for employment are minimal. Some aides go on to get a degree as an LPN or RN. Most hospitals require aides to have at least one year of experience in the health care field. Nurse aide training programs are offered at colleges, tech schools, nursing homes and hospitals. Anatomy, infection control, nutrition, and communication skills are taught. Aides who successfully complete state-mandated programs are given a license. This allows the CNA’s to work. U.S department of labor ranks nurse aides as the tenth fastest growing occupation. A CNA feeds, bathes, dress and assist patients. They can also take vital signs. CNA’s perform duties for patients who are ill or psychically disabled. In nursing homes CNA’s are the main care givers to the patient, which CNA’s grow to have a strong bond with the patient. Because CNA’s have so much close contact with a patient over a long period of time, they are in an important position. CNA’s can monitor a patients progress, and communicate to and for the patient and to the rest of the health care staff.\n
  6. An LPN has one formal year of education plus supervised clinical instruction. LPN’s provide bedside care to the ill, injured, and disabled patients. LPN’s work under the supervision of a registered nurse. An LPN can help doctors and nurses examine and carry out nursing procedures. LPN’s also observe the patients and reports any symptoms, reactions and changes in the patients condition to the doctor or nurse in charge. LPN’s can apply dressings, instruct patients on home health care and handle administrative responsibilities as record taking and managing appointments for a clinic or doctors office. \n
  7. In the U.S a registered nurse must have a license to practice. To get a license a student must graduate from a state approved school of nursing and pass a state board examination. There are three routes a student can take to become a nurse. The first is a two year program. This program is given in a community college, junior college or a technical college. Once you completed the two year nursing program, the student has graduated with an associate of applied science degree. The second option is three years of academics. These programs are offered by hospitals, and the person gets a diploma. The third option is four years of studying and training. Programs are offered by 4 year colleges and universities. Once the student graduates they receive a bachelor of science in nursing degree. All 3 options require for the state mandatory board exam. A high school diploma and a minimum of a C average is necessary for all of the nursing programs. The type of nursing program a student chooses will affect their job potential. The more education will also affect the level of responsibilities assigned. The type of program a student chooses should depend on his or her career and personal goals, interests, and abilities. A bachelor’s degree program is always the best route to take. Because of the demands of the nursing field, sometimes students transfer from an associates degree program to a bachelor degree program. All 2,3 and 4 year nursing programs consists of classroom instruction plus supervised nursing practice. The classes vary according to the length of the program. This will include courses in anatomy, english nursing concepts and technics, and microbiology and others.\n

They also prepare patients and families for life after surgery and teach them how to take care of themselves at home. \n
  11. The responsibilities of an E.R. nurse is to provide emergency medical care for patients. Although emergency nursing is its own speciality, it incorporates almost ever other speciality in the profession. Emergency care can range from giving general nursing care to performing life-saving procedures. Nurses also take and record vital signs, they also check for injuries that may not be visible. Nurses must be able to stabilize the patient, prepare the patient for testing, blood work, surgery and preform resuscitation if necessary. The nurse gives out the initial treatment until a doctor can see the patient. E.R. nurses face situations that require them to act quickly, independently, and confidently. E.R. nurses also have to be a good team player. Working with other medical staff and law enforcement in what can become a tense and emotional situation. E.R. nurses also act as educators. They also receive hundreds of hours of clinical experience in operating rooms. Before surgery, a CRNA takes the patients history, forms a plan for the care and explains the surgery to the patient. At that time if the patient has a question they can answer them. The CRNA gives the patient an IV medication to relax the patient. Then they give a combination of drugs to maintain the patients in a controlled state of unconsciousness. Some general anesthetics are given by inhalation through a mask and tube and others are given through an IV. Because the muscle relaxer prevents the patient from breathing on their own, the CRNA provides artificial respiration through a tube into the windpipe. Throughout surgery the CRNA monitors the patients vital signs by watching the video and digital displays. The CRNA is responsible for maintaining the patients blood and water and salt levels. After surgery the CRNA monitors the patients return to consciousness and watches for complications. The CRNA must be skilled in the use of ventilators, IV’s, blood and fluid replacement techniques and post operation pain management.\n

  22. For my application I took pictures at the U.M Blood Drive. The American Red Cross supplies blood to hospitals for patients who are in desperate need of blood. Nurses and Doctors save thousands of lives a year from the donated blood. As a student entering the medical field I think the blood drives are one of the most important steps needed in order for a medical team to do their job successfully.\n

  25. As another part of my application I volunteered at Montgomery Hospital. There is a law named HIPPA which protects the privacy of a patient. I could not take pictures of the nurses and I performing procedures on patients. I went to the different departments of the hospital and helped the nurses. I took pictures of some of the departments I was in and some of the equipment they use.\n

  27. For my class activity I will be teaching the class how to properly take off contaminated gloves. Step 1: With your right hand pinch the center of the left hand glove and slowly pull the glove off. Step 2: The glove that you just removed, you crumble up using the right hand that still is gloved. Step 3: Close your right hand into a fist. Step 4: With your left hand use your index and middle finger to slide under the right hand glove. Step 5: Pull the glove off. Using only those two fingers pull the bottom of the glove over your hand and turn the glove inside out. Step 6: In your left hand you should be holding the glove inside out. Step 7: Throw the gloves into a biohazard trash can.\n

Doing this project and volunteering at Montgomery hospital helped me figure out the different types of nursing and what they all do. Overall I learned that I want to go to school for my bachelor's degree and become an ER nurse and work in a big trauma unit.\n
