2. Useful safety motto for those involved in
piling work is the ‘5W’:
• Wear hard helmets as protection against falling
objects from heights
• Wear ear plugs as noise levels may exceed 90dB
• Wear goggles or safety glasses to protect eyes
• Wear safety shoes or boots as protection for your
foot
• Wear hand gloves
3. Other than for piling works, all above
safety gears and safety belts are required
for personal safety at construction sites for
handling different kinds of construction
activities.
4. Safety belts – essential for working at
heights
After wearing safety belt it should be tied
with something which is considered to be
secured
Hand gloves must be worn while doing
material handling jobs
Ex:- Welding, Gas cutting etc.
5. Wearing of protective goggles or face
shields is necessary for performing
welding, gas cutting, grinding, brick
dressing etc.
Ear plugs must be worn in noisy areas
where noise levels exceeds 90dB

IS: 2925 – Specification for safety helmets
IS: 6994 – Specification for safety gloves
IS: 7293 – Safety code for working with
construction machinery
IS:8520 – Guide for selection industrial safety
equipment for protection of eye, ear and face.
Other than the mentioned codes above, there
are few more safety related codes in practice
which are issued by BIS.
7. Even with safety gears provided one
should continue to remain alert and vigilant
about personal safety
Concentration hazardous dust and fumes
at the construction site must be within
permissible limits
Access to and exit from the work place
should be hazard free at all levels
8. Work permit is needed for entry or working
in danger-prone zones like blasting site,
stacks, silos, wells etc.
Safety guards and safety devices of
equipment and machinery should be
maintained properly
Dark areas should be illuminated –
irrespective of this one should carry a torch
while moving in dark areas
9. Personnel engaged in radiography should
undergo frequent medical examinations
Safety nets should be provided maximum
6m below the place where workers are
executing work at heights
Over exertion of individuals should be
avoided.
