The Science of ‘OM & I’ Meditation
OM is the Universal Knowledge. OM is the most powerful of all known sounds in the universe.
The sound of OM can be experienced in nature when the bells ring or when you blow the conch.
In fact, when you just put a conch close to your ears you can still hear the great sound of OM.
This great power and energy of OM deserves to be invited into our body, mind and spirit to
strengthen our life force.
‘I’, ‘Me’ & ‘Mine’ is the universal problem. This is a sure sign of ignorance that I am my body. I
attach undue importance to me, my body, my worldly relationships, my possessions, my wealth
and so on.
This evil of ‘I’, ‘Me’ & ‘Mine’ needs to be removed from me. But it is so sticky it will attach itself
again and again. Hence you need to practice the removal and cleansing of your body, mind and
spirit from the greatest enemy – the ‘I’, ‘Me’ & ‘Mine’.
Begin by finding a relatively quiet place to meditate where you will not be disturbed. ‘OM & I’
meditation should be done in silence with or without back-ground instrumental music.
You can sit cross legged on a soft cushion, pillow, mat or carpet on the floor or use a straight back
chair. Eyes may be fully open, half open, or slightly open, letting in just two small slits of
light. Meditating with eyes fully closed is fine as-long-as, the room remains brightly lit so that
enough light passes through the eyelids to keep your brain alert.
Meditation means that you are relaxed as if sleeping, but your consciousness is fully and intensely
awake. Therefore, if you meditate with your eyes closed the room must remain very brightly lit so
that a significant amount of light passes through the eyelids.
‘OM & I’ meditation means not thinking at all, but rather focusing consciousness on the cosmic
whole, "the all and the everything" without thought, judgment, or distraction.
The most basic approach to ‘OM & I’ meditation is to relax, let go, and do nothing. Surrender to
the moment and watch yourself as a silent witness.
If thoughts come to mind, then observe the thoughts without adding to them by your active
participation. Be a detached and passive observer and simply feel your most basic, fundamental
being.
Your two hands must be gently placed on your thighs with the tip of the thumb and the index
finger gently touching each other. The thumb symbolizes the Self and the index finger represents
universal knowledge.
Now focus your attention between the two eyes, over the middle of the forehead. This mid point
on the forehead is recognized in the ‘Chakra system’ as the one having meditative energy.

Watch your thoughts and do not take part in the thought process.
Do not participate in thought building, just observe the birth and death of each thought in your
mind.
Do not grow the thoughts, just watch and be a passive observer. You may even see different
colours – yellow, green, blue, red, orange, white, purple and so on. Just watch the colours. You
may even see some shapes of deities, cross, stars, moon and so on. Just watch and enjoy.

The Science of ‘OM & I’ Meditation
Our body and mind are controlled by the 5 sense organs.
1. The Tongue - Good or Bad Taste
2. The Nose - Good or Bad Smell
3. The Eyes - Good or Bad Sights
4. The Ears – Good or Bad Sounds
5. The Hands – Good or Bad Touch / Feel
These sense organs create either a positive or negative experience in different situations and
with different people based on whether they are stored as good or bad memories by the
senses.
We live our life with the help of these 5 senses. Our happiness or stress in life is based on how
we experience life through the 5 senses. All sensory experiences are temporary and so are our
joys and sorrows. But the unfortunate thing is that we tend to develop habits of using the
senses, the wrong way. Unknowingly and unintentionally we use our senses to pick up more
and more negative experiences and hence end up struggling in our life, relationships, or
careers.
To find joy and peace and overcome the stress and pain one needs to learn to ‘Go Beyond the
Senses’.
Being amongst the senses one can never find permanent peace, happiness or joy. If you
experience sleepless nights, please notice your eye ball. The eye ball will be looking
downwards. All you do is to shift the eye ball up and keep looking up. Look up beyond the 5
senses, above the eye brows. Look at the forehead or the crown of the head. By doing so you
have effectively disconnected from the 5 senses.
To ‘Go Beyond the 5 Senses’ all that you do is to learn to look up, up, up, and above. The more
you look up and hold your focus up and above, the better. You can do this anywhere, anytime.
Just practice looking up. Make a conscious attempt to look up. Look up at the sky, look at the
tip of the tall trees, look at the top of buildings, look at a high point in the ceiling or any point,
high and above.
Now look up within your own mind with your eyes closed. Beyond the senses, middle of the
forehead or middle of the crown of your head. You experience peace, you experience silence,
as you experience gentle rearrangement of brain cells. You can stay there as-long-as you wish.
It’s pure bliss.

The Science of ‘OM & I’ Meditation
Our human mind is a busy hub of multitude of activities. The power of the mind is 2 thoughts
per second.
In a day we have 24 hours X 60 minutes X 60 seconds = 86400 seconds
Now multiply 86400 seconds X 2 thoughts = 172800 thoughts per day.
Even on a conservative estimate it will be easily 50-60,000 thoughts per day. Hence the
confusion, the stress, the worry, the negativity, and the anxiety. All these adds up to
psychosomatic challenges and our bodies become diseased. (Psycho means mind and soma
means body)
To stay healthy, peaceful and be purpose driven one needs to strive to eliminate the cycle of
birth and death of thoughts. Since our mind is like a busy-bee, it is pointless to try to control
it. That’s why meditation techniques based on mind or thought control do not really help
succeed.
Go beyond the five senses and disconnect from the sensory perceptions. Just look up, look
up and look up. Practice it again and again and again. You will notice empty spaces from
within. Your journey to peace has begun. Continue the practice of looking up higher and
higher into the mind space with your closed eyes. You will connect with the cosmic
consciousness. Practice it more and more until you merge from within.
It’s an exhilarating experience, you are in a state of equanimity, a state of purity of body,
mind and spirit.
The idea is to be in the middle of everything and still be detached emotionally from the
consequences of day to day happenings. You are there, but, yet not there. Your body and
mind are just two tools given to you. They are tools and they are not you. You are the spirit,
pure energy.
You are energy, you have no birth or no death. Body and mind are temporary. They die. But
you are permanent. You are the transforming energy. You move from one to another. Please
remember the science, energy can neither be created nor destroyed. You are the
indestructible energy. Be fearless and be bold enough to find yourself, your real you. To attain
freedom from the cycle of births and deaths, the only way is to gain freedom from the birth
and death of thoughts. Just go beyond mind-space by looking up, up and above. Don’t get
involved in thought building but be a silent spectator. Thoughts begin to vanish in every
practice. Continue to discover the real YOU – Pure Energy – Joyfully peaceful.

Life is all about change and transformation. The ice particles drop to the earth forming a heap of
ice, now called the snow. The sun melts the snow into water and then into water vapor. The
water vapor rises in the atmosphere and form clouds. The clouds lead to ice formation. It has
come a full circle. The original ice particle never really died but transformed.
The seed turns into a sapling, sapling into a plant, plant into a tree. The tree gives fruits or
flowers or vegetables. The seed within again starts yet another sapling and the cycle of
transformation continues.
Our spirit is nothing but a seed of energy. It takes a bodily birth when one sperm meets the egg.
The two chromosomes join forces with certain pre-programmed characteristics. The conception
is the beginning of new life order in this new body. The body grows from being a baby, to a
youngster, to an adult, into old age and finally transforms from one to another. Life is a
continuum. Body and mind are temporary, but you are permanent.
It’s important to take care of the body and mind since they are tools given in this life for your
spirit to evolve and grow. Hence while you are in the midst, of all life’s happenings, events and
situations, please remember, they are temporary. So, move from being body conscious to Spirit
or soul consciousness.
Meditation helps you to realise the power within. Focus on the mid-point of the forehead and let
go of the 5 senses. Look up to transformation and positive change you deserve. You meditate on
nothing since everything is in nothing. God is the silence between two sounds – OM and OM. In
silence you see energy. In silence you see power. In silence you see self-realisation. In silence you
see peace. In silence you see a stable mind undeterred by the ups and downs of life. In silence
you see empowerment. In silence you see satisfaction and fulfillment.
So, sit comfortably and look up to the transformation that happens around you. Close your eyes
and imagine the change that takes place in all things alive. The old gives way to the new and the
new grows into old. The cycle repeats. Look up to the revival of energy within your mind space.
What goes up in a wheel will come down and what’s down will come up. That’s the cycle of life.
Accept it! Transformative meditation is all about learning to accept life as it is. Do your duty,
perform your roles. Accept any outcome for your life is changing.

The Science of ‘OM & I’ Meditation
1. EEG (Electroencephalograph) studies confirm changes in brain wave pattern after 30 minutes of
meditation. So regular meditation helps bring about meaningful changes in one’s life, career,
business or relationships.
2. Mobile phones further confirm global connectivity for speedy travel of sound waves using air as
the medium. Meditation too uses the air as a medium to connect one energy being to the
other. This energy connection between people and resources is across small or large distances
spanning countries and continents.
3. Sound waves travel through air as medium. The same air enters our brain through the
breathing mechanism. The brain is the hardware & mind is the software that generates
thoughts. These thoughts travel through the same air as the medium much faster than the
sound.
4. Meditation is the only known technique that helps bring focus and concentration in this
thought travel. Thoughts too travel through air, far and wide in a jiffy. If mobile phones are
instruments for sound to travel, then our own brain is the instrument for thoughts to travel.
Meditation is the technique to make it happen.
5. The mind’s challenge is 50,000 thoughts or so. Every single day at the rate of 2 thoughts per
second. This ocean of thoughts creates confusion in the mind leading to all types of problems in
one’s life. The only solution is to reduce the number of thoughts to gain control over the mind.
To calm the agitated mind, one must minimize the birth and continuity of thoughts.
To help bring down the thoughts, the only technique that helps is meditation. As you begin to
practice meditation, your mind gains more free space by freeing itself from the mad rush of
thoughts that goes on taking its birth every single second.
The word ‘enlightenment’ is defined as being, able to reduce the number of thoughts in one’s mind
to zero. That means reaching a state of thoughtlessness. This is the state of equanimity in which
you gain the ultimate power to choose what thoughts you wish to deal with at any given point in
time.
That means you now have the power to control your mind. Your mind is your king, but now,
meditation helps you to rule your mind. You are the king not the mind.
Enlightenment is the self-realization that you are the ruler- the ultimate king.

Support Systems:
a. A powerful thought or sound that is repeatable (mantra) in order to prevent birth of new and
continuity of thoughts.
b. A set of beads to help maintain direction and discipline for the ever-busy mind that runs amok.
c. Awareness of breathing in and breathing out to gain thought control.
d. Inward focus point to stay focused. This focus point location must be far away from our
outward focused sense organs like taste, smell, seeing, hearing & touching. The only location
happens to be the tip of an imaginary equilateral triangle just above our two eyebrows & the
mid-point in the forehead.
e. Soft, soothing instrumental music.
f. A quiet place away from any kind of noise pollution.
g. Bright lights to penetrate the closed eyes to keep it alert and to avoid sleepiness.
h. Comfortable seat that avoids any kind of discomfort.
The human body is made up of several energy centres and seven of them are of high importance
from self-awareness point of view. These energy centres (chakras) are located at the
1. Base of the spine
2. The abdomen
3. The navel
4. The heart
5. The throat
6. The midpoint in the forehead and the
7. Crown of the head
Meditation helps connect these seven energy centres in one straight line from the bottom to the
top of the crown through the power of visualization.
Awareness of these 7 energy centres is of high value to your meditation.
It is also good to know that our environment both external & internal is made up of the same 5
elements Space, Air, Fire, Earth & Water (SAFEW). Each of these elements has the opposite
Space- Clean Vs Dust, dirt & cobwebs
Air- Pure Vs Impure/ toxic
Fire- Enthusiasm Vs Anger
Earth- Stability Vs Laziness
Water- Clarity Vs Stagnant
Our body is made up of matter and after death goes back to matter. Hence it is good to realize that
I am not my body. The soul or the spirit is independent of the body and this recognition is the key
to meditative health.
