Case study collective identity
1. Case Study – Collective Identity
This case study is crucial in formulating meaningful and successful answers for your exam. You must have this case study done for May 17/10 as we will need this information for exam preparations.
Choose another medium to analyse in regards to British Youth Identity, some examples are: TV Drama, music videos, and the news (you are not limited to these).
Use the concepts you have learned from Debord, Hebdige and Buckingham as well as textual analysis. Formulate an educated opinion as to how youth are being represented and as to how youth are representing themselves (creating an identity for themselves through media texts).
Consider the following questions in your analysis.
How do the contemporary media (social networking, Harry Potter, a medium of your choice) represent British Youth in different ways? How do these mediums create a collective Identity?
How does contemporary representation compare to previous time periods?
What are the social implications of different media representations of groups of people?
To what extent is human identity (British Youth Identity) increasingly ‘mediated’?
Other things to Consider:
Historical – dependent on the requirements of the topic, candidates must summarise the development of the media forms in question in theoretical contexts. (You must look at a few older texts as well, so for Harry Potter you may want to consider films like Harry Potter or attract the same audience as Harry Potter but from 5, 10, and 20 years ago)
Contemporary – current issues within the topic area.
Future – candidates must demonstrate personal engagement with debates about the future of the media forms / issues that the topic relates to. (Looking at the past and the present, how do you think British Youth Identity in the media will change?)
You should end up with at least 5 typed pages by the end of it. Remember, this is information is for 50% of your exam. It is important that you really interact with these theorists’ concepts and you look at as many contemporary mediums as you can.
